Domain.com/postname vs. Domain.com/blog/postname
-
I am wondering what is the best practice regarding blogs?
I read that it would be best to structure a website like a pyramide instead of a flat panckage
But I have seen many blogs where the post shows right after the domain name.
Domain.com/postname instead of Domains/blog/postname
My point is that if a website has many post then the structure will get very flat and this will maybe make your most optimized and important pages less important to google domain.com/page
a) What do you think about this, which one of the two blog solutions do you prefer and why?
b) in context to blog
If for instance you had a keyword like Copenhagen property would you then consider renaming your blog to
realetateagent.com/Copenhagen-property-news/post-name
c) Would write a little intro like 200 words for the page 1 of your blog and add in some keywords.
-
Regarding B), one thing to consider is whether redirects will help or hurt your site. Even websites that are appropriately redirected lose some link equity in the process. See Matt Cutts' video here which says that roughly 10-15% of PageRank is lost through redirects and outgoing links. Therefore, if the site has existed using the format domain.com/post-name for a long time and attracted links to those URLs, then the small benefit you get from adding the keyword to the URL may be outweighed by the natural loss of link equity.
For C), an introductory blurb could help, but make it good quality content, not just for keywords. Especially since this text will push down the actual blog posts, it needs to be worthwhile for people to read or it could increase bounce rate.

Thanks for answer.
B) With this one i ment should i rename the name of the blog to a keyword i target.
Copenhagen-property-news instead of Blog ....copenhagen and property is not already part of my domain name.
C) yes i ment to add like 200 static wordsand a h1 on top of the blog post page, Instead of just having the first posts

I think the setting of the URL is very much depends upon how you are taking your website and how deep is it. If you ask about my website, my main goal is to offer free education to the readers and then there are service pages so I thought it would be fine to go with the direct approach as my service pages are limited.
My URL structure is: http://www.example.com/direct-page
But if your website is deep then making divisions make sense like services/name or blog/post-post
b) I think the division should be basic and not very deep as this will hurt user experience.
c) I really didn’t understand this part but if you mean a text before read more is bad so the answer is NO!
hope this helps!

Hi Ryan,
yes its a very good point, I agree with you the point about analytics.
I just also really wanted to know peoples thoughts about pancake vs pyramid structure. Will the many blog post after the domain.com/ make other pages less significant
how about B and C what is your opinion should the blog page be optimize in such a way?

Thumbs up to Doug. This is also what I said in one of your earlier posts, "D) Adding the blog folder is fine, and helpful in a lot of cases (when you just want to analyze the blog separate from the website, for example). Cheers!"
-
On the topic of whether to put all your blog content under a /blog folder or not. I'd normally recommend it just so that you can easily segment the blog section of your site in Analytics. If you don't it's tough to see how your blog is performing separately from the main site and it's not always obvious what is a blog post and what is a service/resource/support page. Visitors who enter the site via blog posts usually have less commercial intent.

Quotery.com Suggestions?
Hello, I'm hoping to find some advice on how to proceed with a site I started last year — Quotery. I've spent a ton of time and money on it, tried my best to build value to what is typically a copycat niche, and adhered to Google's SEO recommendations (I believe, anyway). Yet, subpar sites rank well above mine. Now I'm wondering if I should find a buyer for the site and cut my losses. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the next steps might be in order to rank higher? Here is what we've tried/accomplished so far: We were mentioned on Netted. We built a well-designed and easy to navigate site that works on all devices. We've added topic descriptions and images, unique author descriptions and pictures, and exclusive picture quotes. We built a well-designed and useful WordPress plugin, and kept the backlinks nofollow (note: our main competitor also has a subpar WordPress plugin with dofollow backlinks, yet they don't get penalized for it). We've published curated blog posts, along with infographics that have been shared millions of time #1, #2, #3. We've built up significant social media profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and elsewhere. We even tried hiring 97thFloor (highly recommended on Moz) for 4 months, although most of their efforts seemed spammy and/or very basic to me (and cost a fortune), so we decided to take SEO into our own hands afterwards. We've added sources, pictures, and relevant information for thousands of quotes (e.g. example seen here). We started working on user profiles, and had plans for much more down the road. However, despite these efforts, sites like BrainyQuote dominate Google's rankings. So is it truly value that will earn you rankings... or is it still all about gaming the system? Of course, any suggestions in my case specifically would be much appreciated.

.COM or .ORG - Which is better?
I work for a non-profit association. We currently use a .com as our primary, but also own the .org. Should we switch to the .org address? What would the benefits be?

Why won't my sub-domain blog rank for my brand name in Google?
For six months or so, my team and I have been trying to get our blog to rank on page one in Google for the term "Instabill." The URL, http://blog.instabill.com, is a sub-domain of our company website and they both use the same IP address. Three pages on our www.Instabill.com site rank in the top three spots when searching our brand name in Google. However, our blog ranks 100+. For our blog, we are currently using b2evolution and nginx. We have tried adding static content on the home page, static content in the sidebar, static content on an About Instabill page, and optimizing blog posts for the keyword Instabill, but nothing seems to work. We appreciate any advice you can provide to us. Thank you!

Is it worth switching from .net to .com if you own both domain names
For over 20 years the company I work for has used www.company.net as their TLD, because we could not register www.company.com at that time. However, currently we also own www.company.com www.company.com has a 301 re-direct to www.company.net We are a global company, and market leader in our industry. Our company name is associated with the product we make, and our competitors use our company name as their targeted keywords to attract visitors to their sites because our company name is synonym with the product we and they make. As we are a global company we also have lots of TLDcc's. The email address of all our employees worldwide have a .net email address extension. Would you advice switching from www.company.net to www.company.com??? And if so, what would be the reasons for this switch. Would it only be for branding purposes? Looking forward to some insights before taking on such an invasive switch (because of the switch of all email addresses of employees worldwide). Best regards, Astrid Groeneveld

Duplicate Content http://www.website.com and http://website.com
I'm getting duplicate content warnings for my site because the same pages are getting crawled twice? Once with http://www.website.com and once with http://website.com. I'm assuming this is a .htaccess problem so I'll post what mine looks like. I think installing WordPress in the root domain changed some of the settings I had before. My main site is primarily in HTML with a blog at http://www.website.com/blog/post-name BEGIN WordPress <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On

Putting A Blog On A Sub-Domain The Right Thing To Do?

I wanted to know if The link juice would be greater if we cross link from sub-domain to main domain? Any major dis-advantages in having it on a sub-domain vs folder? Any other major differences?
