SEO issues? New functionality added to website and now hash (in URL) - fragments
-
Hi All!
We have new nice functionality on website, but now i doubt if we will have SEO issues. Duplicate content and if google is able to spider our website.
See: http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-nero.html#608=1370
With the new functionality we can switch between colors of the models (black / white / red / yellow).
When you switch with Ajax the content of other models is fetched without refreshing the page. (so the url initial part of url stays the same (for initial model) only part behind # changes. The other models are also accessible by there own url, like the red one: http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-rosso.html#608=1372
So far so good.
But now the questions:
1. We use to have url like /boretti-da-vinci-nero.html - also our canonical is that way
But now if we access that url our system is adding automatically the #123-123 to the url to indicate which model(color) is shown. Is this hurting SEO or confusing google? Because it seems that the clean url is not accessible anymore? (it adds now #123-123)
2. Should we add some tags around the different types (colors) to prevent google from indexing that part of website?
Every info would be very helpfull! We do not want to lose our nice rankings thanks to MOZ!
Thanks all!

Hi All, Thanks for the updates.
We solved the issue by only add # to the url when changing from color. So initial load of the product is the clean url.
Guess that is all we need to do to don't get penaltilized by Google.

We had a problem like this starting a couple months ago. We installed Google Custom Search on a site with the results to be displayed on the same page. Now when you visit any page with the search box a hash and a few rubbish characters follow the URL.
So far, no ranking problems have been seen and no errors are showing in webmaster tools.
Andy's suggestion of rel=canonical is a good one. We should do that on our sites.

Hey Jeroen,
If I were you I would play with canonicals in order to not confuse google.
For example: this url http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-nero.html is for the black version, but then if you navigate the page and you go to http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-nero.html#608=1373&swatch_id=750 you should point to the correct URL which is http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-colora.html.
In the last url you also have a bad canonical as even if here http://www.allesvoorbbq.nl/boretti-da-vinci-nero.html#608=1373&swatch_id=750 you're showing the colora model you're canonicalizing to the nero model. You should fix that.
About duplication this is your last problem as google doesn't index different portions of the same page and using the # you're telling google that those are internal anchors and not different pages.
I hope this makes sense.
E.

Hi Joroen,
Are you able to normalise the canonical element to point back to the non-hashed URL? I haven't actually worked on anything quite like this myself, so have no live data to share with you.
Google used to ignore what was after the hashtag (unless you used a hash bang #!), but you will now see anchors being indexed, so this may have some bearing on how it is actioned.

Changing existing URL to boost SEO
What's best practice regarding changing URLs for SEO? If the page contains great information around a particular term but the URL is not reflective of this and thus the page isn't ranking should the URL be changed? Or is it always a hard and fast no? It would seem to make sense to me if the page didn't have any backlinks already and Organic clicks were minimal. Sam

URL structure for new product launch
Hello, I work for a company (let's call it companyX) that is about to launch a new product, lets call it ProductY. www.CompanyX.com is an old domain with a good domain authority. The market in which ProductY is being launched is extremely competitive. The marketing department want's to launch ProductY on a new website at www.ProductY.com.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Lvet
My opinion is that we should instead create a subfolder with product information at www.CompanyX.com/ProductY. By doing this we could leverage on the existing domain authority of CompanyX.com Additionally for campaigns, and in order to have a more memorable URL we could use ProductY.com with a 301 redirect to www.CompanyX.com/ProductY What do you think is the best strategy from an SEO point of view? Cheers

Mass URL changes and redirecting those old URLS to the new. What is SEO Risk and best practices?
Hello good people of the MOZ community, I am looking to do a mass edit of URLS on content pages within our sites. The way these were initially setup was to be unique by having the date in the URL which was a few years ago and can make evergreen content now seem dated. The new URLS would follow a better folder path style naming convention and would be way better URLS overall. Some examples of the **old **URLS would be https://www.inlineskates.com/Buying-Guide-for-Inline-Skates/buying-guide-9-17-2012,default,pg.html

https://www.inlineskates.com/Buying-Guide-for-Aggressive-Skates/buying-guide-7-19-2012,default,pg.html The new URLS would look like this which would be a great improvement https://www.inlineskates.com/Learn/Buying-Guide-for-Inline-Skates,default,pg.html

https://www.inlineskates.com/Learn/Buying-Guide-for-Inline-Hockey-Skates,default,pg.html
https://www.inlineskates.com/Learn/Buying-Guide-for-Aggressive-Skates,default,pg.html My worry is that we do rank fairly well organically for some of the content and don't want to anger the google machine. The way I would be doing the process would be to edit the URLS to the new layout, then do the redirect for them and push live. Is there a great SEO risk to doing this?
Is there a way to do a mass "Fetch as googlebot" to reindex these if I do say 50 a day? I only see the ability to do 1 URL at a time in the webmaster backend.
Is there anything else I am missing? I believe this change would overall be good in the long run but do not want to take a huge hit initially by doing something incorrectly. This would be done on 5- to a couple hundred links across various sites I manage. Thanks in advance,

Like for "seo" keyword..... seo.example.com or example.com/seo

New Domain VS New Page Backlink?
Assuming you've already got a link from:
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Sam.at.Moz
sitea.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) You have two choices for another link: 1. Another link on the same domain but a new page:
sitea.com/page2 (Moz domain rank 55, Moz page rank 30) 2. A link on a new domain but with a lesser domain & page rank
siteb.com/page1 (Moz domain rank 30, Moz page rank 20) Assuming you have no other links to your site - both sites are relevant to your industry, both 5 years old, both have the same number of visitors/external links/ads and the content and anchor text remains the same. Which will have a bigger impact on SERP movements? Sam0 -
A new website issue
Hello everybody,
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | mtmaster
I have started a new website 22 days ago at the beginning of this month and i have long articles. I think this should make the site appear in search results for long tail keywords even if they are not very relevant but as you can see in the attached image from my webmaster tools the impression count has suddenly increased to 100 then significantly decreased again. Even when i cancel "filter" option. Is this normal for a 3 weeks old website? or there is something i have to check? thanks. cLMa04l.jpg0 -
The SEO effect of adding a front page to a website?
I have a client that wants to add a front page to a website so that when a user visitors the site for the first time a full page advert/message/page appears before they enter the site. The client wants this to be cookie controlled so they only see this on the first visit to the website. I am concerned that even if I put links to a sitemap or xml sitemap on this page that it will affect how well the site performs in search engines. Any ideas/suggestions or experiences? I found an interesting page on Quora about using pop ups.... Anyone who comments can you link to some good research and a clear simple explanation I can use to explain to the client why this is a bad idea..... https://www.quora.com/Search-Engine-Optimization-SEO/How-would-a-pop-up-ad-on-a-websites-home-page-affect-SEO And for the record I tried the usability argument....
