Duplicate Content Brainstorming
-
Hi,
New here in the SEO world. Excellent resources here. We have an ecommerce website that sells presentation templates. Today our templates come in 3 flavours - for PowerPoint, for Keynote and both - called Presentation Templates. So we've ended up with 3 URLS with similar content. Same screenshots, similar description..
Example:
https://www.improvepresentation.com/keynote-templates/social-media-keynote-template
https://www.improvepresentation.com/powerpoint-templates/social-media-powerpoint-template
https://www.improvepresentation.com/presentation-templates/social-media-presentation-template
I know what you're thinking. Why not make a website with a template and give 3 download options right? But what about
https://www.improvepresentation.com/powerpoint-templates/
https://www.improvepresentation.com/keynote-templates/
These are powerfull URL's in my opinion taking into account that the strongest keyword in our field is "powerpoint templates"
How would you solve this "problem" or maybe there is no problem at all.

Thanks for your in-depth explanation. Siteliner shows:
Duplicate Content: 24%
Common Content: 58%
Unique Content: 19%We will probably opt-in on the first strategy

Hello,
This is a very common challenge in Ecommerce.
You have a couple options to consider.
1. Keep the existing format but add more unique content to each based on the type. For example on the Powerpoint template you could add at least a paragraph on PowerPoint and how this template works inside the program, a video of you downloading it, opening it, and modifying it with some test data.
2. As you pointed out, one page with 3 different download options.. you can even use this option to up-sell a bundle which includes all 3.
As it is now Google is going to pick one of those pages and index it and basically ignore the others as duplicate content. You may actually have further issues throughout the site due to the shear volume of similar content on each page (the bulk of the page's content is exactly the same baring the item's description). You may need to evaluate how you present all the other info on this page (how it works, what others are saying, whats in this template, whats included etc..) all this is leading to many pages with a lot of the exact same content. If other of your pages are displaying all this info as well, the one paragraph description may not be enough to make the page unique to a search engine.
You can review your site on Siteliner here.
Again this is a big challenge for most Ecommerce sites, especially those with a lot of products. However, for smaller sites with less products it is important to focus on each one of these products and write unique, compelling, informative content that sets you apart from the larger sites.
Hope this helps,
Don

Duplicate content - working with CMS constraints
Hi, We use an industry-specific CMS and I'm struggling to figure out how we can fix duplicate content issues. Thankfully, the vendor has agreed to work on 301 vs 302 redirects. However, they aren't currently able to give us the ability to add rel=canonical tags to page headers (we've put it in their "suggestion box" which tends to take a long time, if ever, to materialize). My understanding is that the tag will not be recognized if it's in the body code, correct? (aka the part of the page we can edit from the CMS) Is there anything else I can do?

Duplicate Content due to CMS
The biggest offender of our website's duplicate content is an event calendar generated by our CMS. It creates a page for every day of every year, up to the year 2100. I am considering some solutions: 1. Include code that stops search engines from indexing any of the calendar pages 2. Keep the calendar but re-route any search engines to a more popular workshops page that contains better info. (The workshop page isn't duplicate content with the calendar page). Are these solutions possible? If so, how do the above affect SEO? Are there other solutions I should consider?

Query string in url - duplicate content?
Hi everyone I would appreciate some advice on the following. I have a page which has some nice content on but it also has a search functionality. When a search is run a querystrong is run. So i will get something like mypage.php?id=20 etc. With many different url potentials, will each query string be seen as a different page? If so i don't want duplicate content. So am i best putting canonical tags in the head tags on mypage.php ? to avoid Google seeing potential duplicate content. Many thanks for all your advice.

Duplicate content check picking up weird urls
Hi everyone, I love the duplicate content feature; we have a lot of duplicate content issues due to the way our site is structured. So, we're working on them. However, I'm not fully understanding the results. For example, say I have an article on breast cancer symptoms. It shows up as duplicate content, by having two urls that point to the exact same page. http://www.healthchoices.ca/articles/breast cancer symptoms and http://www.healthchoices.ca/somerandomstringofcode. I fully understand why that is duplicate content. I am not sure about this though, it picks up the same url twice and calls it duplicate content. For example, saying that http://www.healthchoices.ca/dr.-so-and-so and http://www.healthchoices.ca/dr.-so-and-so is duplicate...however is this not the same page? Is there something I'm missing? Many of the URL's are identical. Thanks, Erin
