Tidied up site by getting rid of bad pages and now rankings tanked. - Please help
-
Hello Mozzers.
We historically had Location specific landing pages on our eCommerce site.
examples -
site.co.ukj/cleaning-enquipment-london
site.co.ukj/cleaning-enquipment-Manchester
These all had unique content(600 words approx) and ranked in top 10 for many cities. I understand these would have been classed as doorway pages so we got rid of them (301'd back to the category pages) and now our rankings for these terms have tanked.
We also have specific branch pages but we have kept these like many other companies with multiple branches do.
It feels like by doing a good thing and tidying up everything , we are actually making our site worse. Everything else seems to be in place. Loads of new regular content , clean profile , mobile friendly, lots of citations etc etc.
Any idea what could be going on here. Here's a link in our site - http://goo.gl/0yjSd8
thanks
Pete

Thanks Craig,
We are basically a tool hire website but previously as also had a number of mini sites which just specialised in one aspect of what we hired, so for instance, we had a carpet cleaner hire website and a generator hire website as well. This helped to give us a larger SEO footprint and until the start of 2014 was proving very successful. By we got a penalty(due to some links from myguest blog which an seo freelancer did for us ) and this took a few months to clean up and we also then stopped the microsites for saftey as well.
I will check the traffic from the 301 domains and see if I can remove them.
thanks

Hi Peter, quite a history you have.
It looks like you have a lot of good advice above, but I want to add a little to what Josh said. I think you are correct to clean up the site, these things will bite you eventually, but it would probably make sense to do it in a staged approach. By cutting off a bunch of pages that rank, you are unfortunately going to lose a lot of traffic, that doesn't mean it isn't the correct long term solution, but the situation you've found yourself in now is as bad as a penalty.
If you are not getting a lot of traffic from the redirected domains I would recommend removing the 301s too, eve with the disavow file I would be concerned that it could be causing issues, especially as such scale and such a variety of topics. I don't see how redirecting a generator hire website to a cleaning website is relevant at all, I suspect Google see it the same way.
To summarise, if this change is costing you money, I'd reverse it, but start planning to get to the point where you can remove the pages asap without the same level of drop, at the moment you've essentially given yourself a penalty.
Best of luck
-
SO much easier to understand now - thanks.
When you get rid of links or tidy up things to clear up a penalty you have a situation where you used links that shouldn't have ranked you to rank higher than you actually would have. You remove those links and fall down to where you really sit.
We think by cleaning those, we've now "improved" the site - and you have - but at the cost of all the old link juice you had. Now you need to go about doing things like "link earning" and better link strategies than you've had in the past. I'm not going to give away everything we do here in Q&A on Moz but let's just say there're enough ways to build links and earn links that your site will rank again if that's the part of the equation you focus on most.

Thanks Dirk for taking a look,
Sorry my fault (typo) , The urls are actually case sensitive so it needs to be done in lower case.
So for example , site.co.uk/cleaning-enquipment-manchester would 301 back to cleaning-equipment
thanks

Hello Matt,
Many thanks for taking a look at our site.
-
The other sites which are 301'd to our site used to be separate microsites we had . We closed these down last year and just 301'd the links to our homepage.
-
The links from Motorhomes etc are all in our disavow file . We used to hire everything but then just concentrated on tools so the seo agency we used at the time spent alot of time cleaning up our link profile and disavowing whatever we couldnt get removed ourselves
-
The links from leedssearch.co.uk and similar are from citations and these link to our branch pages
We did have doorway pages but we 301'd them back to the main category page (the urls are in lower case)
example - http://www.website.co.uk/cleaning-equipment-manchester will 301 back to http://www.website.co.uk/cleaning-equipment
How would we rebuild some authority ?.. We did get a manual penalty last year which we recovered from for unnatural links and it took along time to sort out and get it removed. We are naturally quite scared with regards to link building after what the last freelancer did and got us links from a blog network which got penalized. The seo agency we use to use only provided a few links from poor quality domains and it wasn't worth the money we were paying them every month ?
What would you recommend ?
thanks
pete

In addition to Matt's reply - you state that you redirected the doorway pages type site.co.uk/cleaning-enquipment-Manchester - however if I try this with the url you provided it returns a 404 - rather than redirecting to branches/manchester-tool-hire-shop or /cleaning-equipment

Lots of wild goose chasing later...
Exactly how many sites are 301'd into bestathire.co.uk?
10? 20?
These have a couple thousand links and redirect 301 to your site:
bestathire.com
londononlinehire.co.uk
jetwashhire.co.uk
woodchipperhireuk.co.uk
chainsaw-hire.co.uk
platformhireuk.co.uk
nationalgeneratorhire.co.uk
scarifierhire.co.uk
carpetcleanerhireuk.co.uk
patioheater-hire.co.uk
rotavatorhireuk.co.ukThese are the most obvious link networks in the world:
motorhoming.eu
a272.co.uk
motorhoming.org
motorhoming.net
motorhoming.com
motorhoming.biz
motorhoming.co.uk
motorhoming.mobi
motorhoming.info
motorhoming.me.uk
motorhoming.org.ukThen there's .info spam
iclanky.info
schoolpay.info
0b0b.info
2fashion.info
freestockphotography.info
toptravellingtips.com
vidysporta.info
kivis.info
schoolhide.info
weddingdesignideas.co
syerasale.comAnd a local UK network
leedssearch.co.uk
nottinghamsearch.co.uk
plymouthsearch.co.uk
leicestersearch.co.uk
bristolsearch.co.uk
norwichsearch.co.uk
edinburghsearch.co.uk
derbysearch.co.uk
sheffieldsearch.co.uk
cardiffsearch.co.uk
london-search.co.ukNearly 60% of the rest of your backlinks come from multiple subdomains on either blogspot or opendi.com
I'm assuming everything listed above is in your disavow? You may need to rebuild some authority having given up 80% of your link juice. And if they're not in a disavow, the link profile isn't nearly clean.
If you also had a bunch of doorway pages as well, have you checked WMT for a manual penalty? If not, you're just on the harsh end of some algo issues. Did you also pass the 301s from those old doorway pages to another part of your site?

How does this company rank this page?
If you Google the keyword "used iPhone 5," the URL ranking #1 in the SERP is the following: http://buy.gazelle.com/buy-used-iphone-5/ This page has zero content on it and a button on it that takes you to a category page with the iPhone 5 pre selected. My question is **how does this page outrank the sites products pages? **I ran a backlink analysis and don't see any links pointing to that URL. Also, **how does this site deal with its duplicate content issues? **If you look at the following URLs, you'll see a bunch of duplicate content in the "Key Features" section below the fold. http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-at-t http://buy.gazelle.com/buy/used/iphone-5-16gb-sprint If you think about it, this site will have different product pages for each variations of cellphone carrier and cellphone storage capacity. So for an iPhone 5, they will have 15 pages! Any insight into this would be much appreciated!

301 / 404 & Getting Rid of Keyword Pages
I had a feeling that my keyword focused pages were causing my site not to rank well. I do not have that many keywords. I have 2 main keyword phrases along with 6 city locations. For example (fake) "tea house tampa" "tea house clearwater" "tea house sarasota" and "tea room tampa" "tea room cleawater" "tea house sarasota". So, I don't feel that I need that many pages. I feel like I can optimize my home page and maybe 1 or 2 topic pages. Right now, I have a keyword for each of those phrases. These are all internal pages on 1 domain. Not multiple domains. Sooo... I tested it by 301ing a few of my "tea house" KW pages to the home page. And low and behold... my home page rose BIG TIME! Major improvement! I'm talking like 13th to 2nd! Here is my question... how should I proceed? My SEO has warned me against 301ing too many pages all pointing to the home page. He says that will negatively impact my ratings. Should I 404 some pages? Should I build a "tea room" topic page and 301 that set there? What is worse? 301 or 404? How many is too many? I'm really excited by these results, but I'm scare to move forward and hurt what has happened. Thanks in advance!

Google is squashing my rankings, insight please?
Last year with penguin, our rankings took a hit. We have worked hard, tirelessly, to recover. Last june we had no social media. We had an old website. We completely updated our website to responsive design, over 500k pages. We post daily fresh content, we expanded into social media. We now have 100k followers on Facebook. We are seeing thousands of Google + in the last few months, and not by hiring a single SEO consultant, and we use no ad-words or any paid advertising (except for adsense, limited on our site). We got thousands of Google +1's simply by sharing content in different circles and they liked us the old fashioned way. And yet our rankings have actually decreased. Just Saturday night, suddenly rankings that were on page 2 of Google dropped to page 5. Rankings on page 5 dropped to page 13, over night. Mind you, last year (prior to the penguin update), those page 2 and page 5 rankings were in the top 3 spots on page one. So its been quite a fall. We are doing something wrong, and I don't know what it is. The overnight rankings drop did not correspond with anything we did whatsoever. They just literally dropped abruptly. here is our site: (redacted for privacy, thanks for answering my question!) here is a sample of a fallen ranking. Friday, for example, we ranked on page one of google in this search:(redacted)

and now we are on page 3. I am open to ideas, suggestions. I want to raise our D/A and have worked hard over the last year to do so, but it doesn't seem to be working too well. Do i have bad inbound links? Is our site not a quality enough user experience? Outside advice is well received. Thank you to anyone who can lend their insight. 🙂0 -
Google is ranking the wrong page for the targeted keyword
I have two examples below where we want it to rank for the targeted page but google picked another page to rank instead. This is happening a lot on this site I just recently started to work on. Example 1 Googles Choice for key word Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels What we want Google to choice for Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Other pages about Motorcycle tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires We even used the rel="canonical" for this url to point to our target page. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/50/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Example 2 ATV Tires We want this page to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires however google has decided to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All that is acutally one folder under where we want it.

Can someone please help me understand my sites recent loss of rankings?
My site has been top 3 for 'speed dating' on Google.co.uk since about 2003 and it went to below top 50 for a lot of it's main keywords shortly after 27 Oct 2012. I did a re-submission request and was told there was 'no manual spam action'. I have a Page Authority of 53, a regular blog http://bit.ly/oKyi88, a KLOUT of 40, user reviews and quality content. I did discover that another URL I using was set to a 302 instead of a 301 for some reason. I don't necessarily think this was an issue as Google should know which is the trusted URL and therefore which content to list. I removed this redirect completely about 3 weeks ago, but I've seen no improvement. I'm looking at improving various things, but I'm still not sure why I've been hit and wonder if I'm missing something obvious? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Retaining rank when integrating with a larger site
Our client was just acquired by a larger company and they want to merge their 100-page website into the larger, parent company's 500+ page website. They currently have a strong ranking for a focused group of keywords and are worried about losing their ranking position for those important keywords. The keywords are roughly 80-90% of the focus of the old site, but will represent only 30-40% of the focus of the new site. Will this move hurt their rankings? What can we advise them to do to retain the value of their current ranking strength for the target keywords?

Need help/insights. Site SEO = OK, Authority BLs = OK, Rank page #1\. How to reach pos #1?
Hi there! Some doubts are confusing my head and need some assistence from you to get on the right track. I'll explain my situation and want to hear from you what do you really recommend for med/long term permanent results. 1 - I have a PR2 (.com.br) domain; 2 - I'm talking about little/med competition micro-niche keywords; 3 - I got all pages I want to, indexed (I have a well SEO constructed website with internal link building); 4 - If a keyword has average competition, I'll already start ranking in page #3 on the SERP's; For a few low competition keywords I start on page #1; 5 - I do a little whitehat link building, 1 or 2 backlinks on authority sites and then like 15 days later I came to page #1, generally on position 9/10; And then I got stucked 🙂 No more authority sites where I can get backlinks... I do some posts on the company twitter/facebook page's, but they are no follow, so I don't really now if this can help. (never see a SERP result). I did some "blackhat" stuff to see if it really work: I can say for sure the "profile backlinks" that we can buy from some sites doesn't work (maybe it's just for me). I can't see it on webmaster tool and neither my ranks changed since I bought a pack of 100 links (the links are working, I see it one by one) to test. Maybe the problem is about the domains, cause my site is .com.br and I'm buying .com profile links. I guess google understand backlinks from .com.br more valuable for my sites. Back to whitehat: I wrote some articles and posted it the right way, of course on .com.br articles sites, got it indexed and can see the backlink on webmaster tool, but no change on SERP's. (maybe this can be a long term result and I'm not seeing it yet). I'm really "scratching my hand" to do some blackhat stuff, but I don't want to lose what I already have done... I heard a lot about scrapebox but doesn't fell confortable to spam as hell a lot of blogs. I really want long term permanent results (my sites are totally whitehat/corporate sites). Can you expert guys give me some point to where I need to "walk" now to improve the SERP's? I never reached top #1 and want to try to rank at least one time to understand how this can be made... I'm thinking now to pay someone to rewrite 20 copies of an article and up it on some sites, to see if 20 can improve something. But still no confident, because it will cost like $100 for a good writer do it for me on my language. Maybe I can do better things with 100 bucks. I guess I did the path right: Internal SEO -> got indexed -> backlinking from authorities -> new articles backlinks to me (is it ok at this position or no?) -> (what next ?) I know SEO is a hard/never ending work, but what I'm trying to get cleaned on my head is the path of the work (if a right path really exists). Every word will be apreciated. What do you can suggest to me to try now? (please give me a hint to see SERP's results 🙂 if I feel that something worked, no matter how it can cost to me, but I'll pay for the work happily) Sorry if I'm a little confusing, english isnt' my first language. Thanks.
