Substantial position drop? - Urgent
-
Have been looking at WMT and discovered that on 10 October there was substantial average position drop, from around 14 to 20.
Does anyone have any ideas why this may have happened? As far as I know there's nothing that we have done could have impacted.

Hi,
Do you have both http and https active on the site? You can use something like siteliner.com to check this. I've noticed rankings, clicks and impressions drop off in Webmaster tools on a client site before, and it was actually just registering on the http webmaster tools property instead of https, due to a change made by the developers. Has your traffic also dropped off in Google Analytics on the same day? Or has it remained the same? I notice you say that orders dropped off also, but if traffic hasn't, I'd investigate any dev changes which might have occurred and test through your order process in different browsers/setups. You could also segment your Google Analytics data by browser/OS and check conversions, compared with the previous period, to see if any particular browser has stopped placing orders.
Is your website fairly new? I definitely notice more fluctuation in newer websites, and websites with less traffic.
Hope this helps,

I'd take a look at Analytics and compare the periods before and after the drops, looking at landing pages filtered by traffic medium organic. This should show you which pages have seen the biggest loss, which in turn should give you an idea of what keywords have been effected.
If there are just a few pages then run through a technical audit checklist on these pages to make sure no errors have been introduced - for example a page hasn't accidentally been set to "no index" (I've seen it happen).
You could also compare average position of keywords between two periods in WMT to see where the biggest drops are.

I do have Moz Pro, however I won't necessarily be tracking the keywords/pages that is dropped off. At this stage I don't know which they are.
According to the last crawl there had been several substantial increases, I just don't know who to believe!
I've just had an idea I should be able to use a export from WMT and Excel with a few formulas.

Difficult really unless you already use something to track your keyword positions, such as Moz Pro or SEMrush.
-
There does seem to have been a traffic drop, or more specifically a drop in orders which would tie up nearly directly to that date.
How is the best way of comparing positions between two dates?
-
Have you double-checked the accuracy of this?
I would first look to see whether traffic has been impacted by the drop, and then go on to check my main keyword rankings. Then I would try to figure out which search queries and pages I've dropped position for, and see if I can spot any patterns.

Are these Magento security concerns urgent?
Hey Mozzers! I recently started working with a new Magento programmer for our ecommerce site. He sent me this scan/report outlining some security issues that need to be addressed. This is a new partnership so I'm not sure which issues should be a major concern, or if I should not focus on them. Would you be able to give me your opinion on the importance of the security issues? https://www.magereport.com/scan/?s=http://metallumcreations.com/

Site hacked and now being spammed and rankings dropping
I have a client's site that was hacked in December and a whole bunch of spam pages were created. We've since removed those pages and they serve a 404 error now. But I pick up a new link almost every day from a another spammy site linking back to the pages that were created. I'm updating the Disavow as I see the new links reported in ahrefs but what else can I do to stop these buggers and how can I recover rankings other than building links and creating content

Cloudflare - Should I be concerned about false positives and bad neighbourhood IP problems
I am considering using cloudflare for a couple of my sites.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | lcourse
What is your experience? I researched a bit and there are 3 issues I am concerned about: google may consider site bad neighbourhood in case other sites on same DNS/IP are spammy.
Any way to prevent this? Anybody had a problem? ddos attack on site on same DNS could affect our sites stability. blocking false positives. Legitimate users may be forced to answer captchas etc. to be able to see the page. 1-2% of legit visitor were reported by other moz member to be identified as false positive.
Can I effectively prevent this by reducing cloudflare basic security level? Also did you experience that cloudflare really helped with uptime of site? In our case whenever our server was down for seconds also cloudflare showed error page and sometimes cloudflare showed error page that they could not connect even when our server response time was just slow but pages on other domains were still loading fine.0 -
Penguin 3.0 - Very minor drops across the board. Don't think its a penalty, any ideas?
Hey All, I just can't figure this out. My site has been ranking well for years, i've never done anything suspicious with it and since the penguin update, my rankings have dropped across the board but only by about 4 - 8 places each, some terms have went up from nowhere to page 8 etc. I don't think i've been hit with a penalty, so I don't know what the problem is or how to recover from it. Does anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong? Update: Perhaps some sites that were linking to mine have been hit with a penalty? Update 2: I just found myself somehow in some spammy link network for 600 sites that looked identical, I don't know how or why my website is in this! I have disavowed all of these links 5 days ago, no change to rankings. pY80Dzi

Can a home page penalty cause a drop in rankings for all pages?
All my main keywords have dropped out of the SERPS. Could it be that the home page (the strongest) page has been devalued and therefore 'link juice' that used to spread throughout the site is no longer doing so. Would this cause all other pages to drop? I just can't understand how all my pages have lost rankings. The site is still indexed so there's no problem there.

SEO - Why variation in Google positioning? Are we penalized?
Our webiste is made of 2 different parts hosted in 2 different directory on the same domain: 1. The website itself, which can be seen as a catalog. 2. A blog on WP. Sometimes we lose 50% of our traffic and 5 to 10 days later the traffic goes up again. When looking at position in Google it appears that when losses of traffic happen, the Google positions of pages from the website become bad. The blog pages themselves keep their good position. Suddenly after few days we find our previous good postioning and we have a good traffic again. Here at the questions we have: 1. Why do we have variation on our Google positioning? Which parameters can influence? Bounce rate? Speed? 3. Why only the website is penalized and never the WP blog whereas they are on same domain? If someone has experienced it before or has a idea, your expertise is welcome... Thanks.

Stuck at position 23 - Google Sandbox?
Hello, We have an exact match domain, that for it's exact match term is stuck at position 23. We launched around June 20 I'm talking about only the exact match term On the home page, we have yet to put keyword into the content, h1, or meta description, although they do occur in fragments in the meta description. The keyword is in the title This is not a very competitive industry For other sites that I built a couple of years ago, exact match domains (for their exact match term) would get on the first page after the sandbox was complete (4-6 months) for non-competitive industries even without backlinks. Are we experiencing a sandbox? How long? What information do you need? Thank you.
