Thin Content, Ecommerce & Reviews
-
I've been reading a lot today about thin content and what constitutes thin content.
We have an ecommerce site and have to compete with large sites in Google - product pages in terms of content quantity are low and obviously competitors all have similar variations of the same product descriptions.
Does Google still consider ecommerce sites as with thin content as low quality? A product page surely shouldn't have too much content which doesn't help the user.
My solution to start was to get our customer reviews added to the product pages to help improve the amount of quality content on this page, then move into adding video etc when we have resource.
Thanks

Hi Everett
Yep, that all definitely makes sense. Sometimes with the more mundane products it's hard to make them stand out.
We do include most of this information but I'l review whether there;s anything we could add.
Thanks again

Becky,
"Thin" is a relative term when it comes to content. There is no hard-fast rule about how many words to have on a page, and let's not forget that words are not the only form of content. Multiple product images, product demonstration videos, user-generated reviews (as you mentioned) are all great types of content to have on a product page.
Seek to answer the obvious questions for the visitor, and do not use manufacturer-supplied content.
Some examples of "obvious questions" for the user:
- What does this product do?
- Why should I buy this product instead of the other one?
- Why should I buy from this merchant instead of the other one?
- What options do I have in terms of color, size, fit, threat-count, type, style...?
- What are the features?
- What are the dimensions?
If it only takes 100 words to answer all of the obvious questions then that's probably OK for most products. If it takes 300 words then that's what you'll need for a good user experience.
Think about your shoppers, not search engines, and you'll probably do fine. Your shoppers don't want to read the same product description that's on all of the other sites. They may want to read lots of feature / stats data if it's an expensive or complicated product, but probably not if it's a plain white T-shirt.
Good luck!

Thanks!
Also along these same lines, we're always adding new product pages and over the next few months there will be a large amount of these added.
Is it a problem for Google if a lot of the site has 'thinner' content - in terms of ratio?

Great thanks, yes I have started creating content, we just don't have a huge resource for producing it at the moment. It's something we're working on.
Thanks!

This I hope you find helpful as well and touches on then content and it is very recent.

Hi there.
Here is a video from Matt Cutts. I know it's old, but I think it does summarize what you should do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LI_NmnXn5A4
Basically, as always, it's all about user experience. I think that your idea about reviews on page is quite good. Also consider creating (besides good descriptions) supportive materials like posts about those products, reviews, video reviews, other related articles etc. and then link to those articles from descriptions or specific parts of product pages.
Hope this makes sense.

Duplicate content issue
Hello! We have a lot of duplicate content issues on our website. Most of the pages with these issues are dictionary pages (about 1200 of them). They're not exactly duplicate, but they contain a different word with a translation, picture and audio pronunciation (example http://anglu24.lt/zodynas/a-suitcase-lagaminas). What's the better way of solving this? We probably shouldn't disallow dictionary pages in robots.txt, right? Thanks!

Is legacy duplicate content an issue?
I am looking for some proof, or at least evidence to whether or not sites are being hurt by duplicate content. The situation is, that there were 4 content rich newspaper/magazine style sites that were basically just reskins of each other. [ a tactic used under a previous regime 😉 ] The least busy of the sites has since been discontinued & 301d to one of the others, but the traffic was so low on the discontinued site as to be lost in noise, so it is unclear if that was any benefit. Now for the last ~2 years all the sites have had unique content going up, but there are still the archives of articles that are on all 3 remaining sites, now I would like to know whether to redirect, remove or rewrite the content, but it is a big decision - the number of duplicate articles? 263,114 ! Is there a chance this is hurting one or more of the sites? Is there anyway to prove it, short of actually doing the work?

Duplicate page content query
Hi forum, For some reason I have recently received a large increase in my Duplicate Page Content issues. Currently it says I have over 7,000 duplicate page content errors! For example it says: Sample URLs with this Duplicate Page Content http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/gowns/news.html http://dikelli.com.au/accessories/news.html
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | sterls
http://dikelli.com.au/gallery/dikelli/gowns/gowns/sale_gowns.html However there are no physical links to any of these page on my site and even when I look at my FTP files (I am using Dreamweaver) these directories and files do not exist. Can anyone please tell me why the SEOMOZ crawl is coming up with these errors and how to solve them?0 -
Is a "Critical Acclaim" considered duplicate content on an eCommerce site?
I have noticed a lot of wine sites use "Critical Acclaims" on their product pages. These short descriptions made by industry experts are found on thousands of other sites. One example can be found on a Wine.com product page. Wine.com also provides USG through customer reviews on the page for original content. Are the "Critical Acclaim" descriptions considered duplicate content? Is there a way to use this content and it not be considered duplicate (i.e. link to the source)?

Am I Doing This Wrong? Ecommerce SEO
I ran my site through the SEOMoz On-Page Optimization tool and one of the problems noted was "Keyword Self-Cannibalization" in this case, it was stating I was using the keyword "Board Games" too much. Site in question: http://theboardgamers.co.uk/ The problem being is that every product link contains the word "Board Game" - Which makes sense, but I guess it may look spammy to the SEO world. Would it be best to remove the "board game" part from each internal link and only leave it in the URL structure?
