Site Redesign Leads Dropped
-
One of my clients recently had his site redesigned.
He wanted to change the design completely, I did offer advice on aspects relating to the redesign, I think its fair to say that he didn't follow all of my advice.
PPC still running as usual and rankings still OK but the leads have gone down.
Most of the leads come via the phone.
I have suggested a number of ways to establish what has gone wrong including surveying his existing customers, comparing old and new designs etc...The client isn't keen on these methods.
I'm hoping someone has some direct experience and can offer some direction as to how best to proceed?

In my opinion, absolutes are not possible. The best method to settle on page format, in my opinion, is an automated system that tries different page element formats and picks the combination that performs best. But this only works well when you have a very high sales volume to allow that type of testing.
If you have low sales volume or want to use experience to get a head start is to hire someone like SiteTuners to make a landing page design that they believe will work well based upon their extensive experience in doing this day-in-day-out for lots of clients who own a variety of businesses. They can give you a basic design and a list of page elements that might kick performance up upon testing. I have used their service and thought it was educational and helpful.
You can also buy Tim Ash's (he owns SiteTuners) book, Landing Page Optimization, and learn many things that you can try on your own. I've read it all twice and many parts of it many times. It is helpful, but you still don't "know" what will work without testing.

Hi Egol,
Thats great advice RE the competition I will check it out.
The client likes absolutes its difficult to consult on changes / improvements because he would like to see evidence that the improvements should help. Is there a way to get at this kind of info?

Hi Eric,
Great advice...
I actually went through comparing new to old site versions.
Would love our thoughts have sent a PM.

If he played a major role in determining the new look, feel and function of the new design....... I would say that the design was rendered according to his instructions and approval. Then offer to consult with him on changes/improvements at your regular labor rate.
But, before doing any changes, I would go out looking at competitors to see if they are doing anything that would scoop his clients. Plus know that Adwords, TV, direct mail, phone calling, could all grab clients away and not be seen in rankings.

Did you move the conversion points on the site? For example if you moved the phone number from the top of the page to a side bar element (widget), that could be enough to see a drop in leads. Not sure what the site is or what it looked liked pre and post redesign, but moving conversion points on the site even a little can cause a rise or drop in leads. Feel free to PM the URL or post it in the thread, and we could give more specific feedback.

IE & Edge issues with site relaunch - advice appreciated
Hi, I've been involved in a major ecommerce site relaunch, redesign and backend and have been involved in several successful ones before. On the whole things have gone great. Of course there are some minor bugs to fix, rendering issues etc but my real concern is a significant decline in conversion rate BUT only for IE and Edge users. All other major browsers conv rate has increased. Trawling through analytics and the site itself in those browsers there is no obvious sticking points e.g bounce rate has improved on all browser inc IE & Edge, no particular point in the funnel is suffering more than others, no particular page or landing page is doing much worse than others etc. it just seems like all the kpi's (except bounce) are down a little on the 2 microsoft browsers, which has a significant impact. One of the things that changed on relaunch is that we moved to https and im wondering if that might be causing an issue with IE / Edge security or privacy settings or that functionality on the site that relies on cookies is being affected, though in testing we haven't come across anything. I'd appreciate any advice or insight. Thanks, Andy

Site Customisation - Urgent Input Required!
Hello, We are currently setting up a way of customising a client's site based on PPC campaign. I am wondering whether or not there are any SEO issues we need to be aware of. Overview Our client’s site, as accessed by a user through Google Organic, will be the complete site; the same site Googlebot will see. The site, as accessed by a user through a particular Google Adwords campaign, will return a customised version of the site. How the Customisation is Happening The Adwords campaign will be set up to target a particular region, using Adwords’ built-in location targeting. Its ads will link to pages on the regular site, but each URL will be appended with a URL parameter that will trigger the customisation. A cookie will also be planted in these users’ browsers to ensure that the customisation continues as the user browses from page to page on the site. The majority of the content will be the same but the site will promote a particular store of the client, one local to the searcher. Other stores won’t be promoted on this customised version of the site. SEO Thoughts All pages will have canonical tags on them referencing the original, unmodified version of the page. I personally can’t see any issue with regard to SEO because we are approaching this in the spirit of helping the user. But with launch on the horizon I am starting to worry slightly and would welcome the feedback from anyone else here – are there any SEO issues that may arise from this?

Question regarding eCommerce sites, relative URLs and secuirty certificates
We recently installed a new SSL certificate on an ecommerce site. Our IT Director is insisting that all pages on the site must be coded in such a way so that the address bar maintains a green background when a visitor is navigating the site after navigating to a secure page or logging in. I have worked on many ecommerce sites and never has this been an issue. Amazon does not use the green bar....but they are Amazon. In order for this to work, he is insisting that all internal URLs be coded as relative instead of absolute. How bad is this for SEO or does it really not matter that much? How crucial is it for trust and security? Opinions welcome!

Complete website redesign - what to look for
We are having our website redesigned by an SEO company to increase CTR and for a better user experience and I was wondering what to look for and what key questions to ask. At the moment we rank very well for a few strong keywords and I m afraid that by rewriting the content and changing the website layout we might put at risk some of the rankings even for a brief period of time. This company seems to be very good so I need to know what to ask them to make sure everything goes according to plan. Your thoughts are appreciated.

I am trying to make my site a better user experience please help

I am trying to get the advertising and the user friendly to match, i need the adverts to make money and need to make sure i have them in the right place so they get clicked more. I want to reduce my bounce rate and want people to not just read one page but to go to different pages and would like advice on what i need to do. here is the site http://www.in2town.co.uk and here are the example pages that i would like to focus on to increase the user friendly and keep people on my site while making sure i have the adverts in the right place http://www.in2town.co.uk/news/gossip-celebrity/alex-reid-says-he-is-fed-up-with-chantelle-houghton-lies http://in2town.co.uk/news/travel-holiday-news/sainsburys-customers-10-points-back-on-easyjet-flights-with-nectar http://in2town.co.uk/news/small-business-news/how-emerging-technology-can-help-reduce-small-business-costs I am looking for ideas on how to increase the experience and how to keep people longer on my site while at the same time have people clicking the ads by increasing the conversion rate.

14,000+ links a to one site - is this a problem?
First, thanks to those who have helped me before. Second, according to Google Webmaster there are about 14,765 external links to my site. According to Open Site Explorer I have 22. So a couple of questions: 1. Why such a discrepancy? 2. Of the 14,765 links shown in Google Webmaster 14,665 are all from one place and all link to my home page. The site is interiordesignproductfinder.com. In August of this year I bought a sponsorship there. There are several of these sponsors so which show up on a rotating basis. Will having 14,765 links all of a sudden showing up be grounds for some type of a Google downgrade? Why are there 14, 765 links instead of just one. Is a new link created every time our sponsorship rotates to the page? Another thing, in the past couple of months our conversions have dropped significantly. we average about 180 visits a day with a 50% bounce rate. Is there anything obvious thatt might have caused this drop? Thanks for any insights. Don www.uniquegiftsanddecor.com

How to you determine what a good CPA is on an ecommerce site?
Do you calculate shipping, warehouse cost, cost of goods into your CPA? Lets say my current CPA is $20 and average order is $100. Its 20% of each order cost goes to lets say ppc, seo, email or affiliate. Do I include cost of shipping lets say its $7.00 and cost of goods are $40.00 I end up with a profit of $33 and that doesn't include taxes, salary, warehouse cost ect. *this is all hypothetical, Im trying to see if my real CPA is inline or I should work on decreasing it. Any thoughts? Thanks
