Local citations - domain or business name
-
I have a bit of a tricky situation with a client where there is some history with old domains. But this is the current situation which I need to stick to:
Business name (all made up) is Acme Print
- 2 live websites - acme-niche(dot)com and productsandservices(dot)com
- Third website acmeprint(dot)com is live and owned by an old partner, different NAP.
acme-niche(dot)com and productsandservices(dot)com share the same NAP. Not much traffic and a bit of a poor domain profile for acme-niche(dot)com, so suggest just using productsandservices(dot)com. Also acme-niche(dot)com would be a bit misleading for use for the whole business in any case.
However, all content for productsandservices(dot)com refers to Acme Print. Because of all the confusion should we keep the productsandservices(dot)com referring to Acme Print throughout, or update with new productsandservices(dot)com logo, mention that it is a trading name of Acme Print and refer to the trading domain name throughout the content.
I want to know the best option for listings and citations - the trading name which is a domain name or Acme Print? I've not worked with a local site where domain name and business name and a separate business with domain are mixed up.

Hi Michael,
Yes, this is a bit complicated. Ideally, you'd have just 1 website for the business, but if you have to have 2, be sure there is no connection between the two. No shared NAP, no shared content, etc. It would need to be run as a completely separate business to avoid the danger of NAP confusion.

I'm sorry for my late reply, i've been off the radar these past days, work and bug.
Well, 2 shared the same address, with the third at a different address which is not directly owned and the closest to the brand. Actually the 3rd domain is a plural.
We've got hold of the singular, which was available (can't believe they didn't have that amongst all the variations they've got kicking around!). It's a bit difficult to explain exactly what I mean but I don't want to post the URLS. The EMD is to be moved to this new domain, with acme-niche(dot)com redirected to it (or just shut down).
So now we will have one good core domain that is the brand with another domain out there with a different NAP but using the same logo (and to all intents and purposes appearing to be the same business). So I think we are working on trying to get this other site to change the logo and distance itself.
Does this sound reasonable?

Hi Michael! Are you able to provide the information that Miriam is asking for? It sounds like it'd help her get you a good answer.

Hi Michael,
Citations are based on physical location. Are you saying that there is a single physical location being represented by 3 different websites and that your customer does not own the website that accurately represents the real brand (Acme Print.com)?

Google My Business: Company listing is showing in search instead of division address - similar names/same city
Hi! I have a client whose company name is very similar to one if their company divisions. This division has multiple locations but its main location is in the same city as the parent company. The problem is that when you search for the division, the parent company shows up. The parent company has a physical address, but most users searching need to be going to the division address which takes customers. They are having problems with customers coming to the parent company address instead. I have made the Google My Business parent company page to show service areas instead of their business address. Yet, their listing still comes up first when searching for the division location. This is because of part of the parent company name is in the division name. My client wants users to be able to find the division more so than the parent company. Anyone had this issue before? Any tips would be great!

Local SEO penalty?
Hi Moz Community We are in a unique position. We just launched a new site for a client. The site was doing fine before but it wasn't very user friendly. We created a site with almost identical architecture and content as the last one, just new design and layout. Within 5 days, the site dropped off of LOCAL search almost completely, it now ranks on the 9th page in Austin Texas. (reliantplumbingdotcom). Every other location (Dallas, LA, Philadelphia, Houston) all show the site on the first page for relevant keywords (Austin Plumbers, Austin Plumber) I have no idea what to think about this and don't know if we're being penalized somehow (checked GSC and no manual penalty) I have never experienced a site being blacklisted locally but well ranked everywhere else. Thoughts?

Local Listing - Service Business with Three Areas Served
A client of mine owns a business that is a service (i.e. they do not have a storefront). They service three major markets - Atlanta, GA; Charlotte, NC; Nashville, TN. When talking to the Google My Business team, they said we needed to set up only one listing based on where we were headquartered (which is Atlanta) and then list that we service the other markets so that it shows in the listing. So we have one business listing set up as a service but headquartered in Atlanta and show the service area as Atlanta, Nashville and Charlotte. Does this seem correct? There is a lot of competition for them so looking to boost local search as much as possible. Thanks!

How to perform a search as though you are in a local city
Hi community. So I live in Dubai but have a lot of clients in the UK that want local SEO. Does anyone have any tips on performing search queries in Google that reflect a true search results page as though that search was being performed in a chosen UK city? say if I wanted to see the SERPs for "hairdressers" in the city of Bristol in the UK, at the moment I get a pretty vague UK SERP from With lots of Dubai based adverts et. Any tips would be great, thanks

Has Google Local search algorithm changed in the last 6 months?
My organic search results have increased, but I noticed that my Google local search results have dropped drastically. I haven't changed anything on the local side. I consistently get reviews. In my industry, I have more reviews (all 5 star) than anyone else. It actually shows weird results, like competitors that have no reviews and don't even have all of their information filled out. It is even showing competitors that are out of business. I have a lot of citations with the same NAP. I use Moz local for this purpose as well. So, I am wondering if the algorithm has changed and if I need to update my profile to match it. Thank you in advance!

Google my business
Hi, I have implemented the code [https://plus.google.com/+Thezenagency](<a href=)" rel="publisher"> on my website. I have also linked my google+ page which shows a tick with the words "verified local business" next to my logo and name. The problem is however i still do not have the box appear on the right hand side of a branded web search with my location, picture, reviews etc. Is there another step which needs to be completed? This was a couple of weeks ago it was done. Thanks in advance

Image names, product names, alt tags the same. Image names with various sizes the same?
I am rebuilding my site and wish to provide the best and complete information about a product and the image, and alt tag for the user. Is it ok, good, to use the same name in a image file name, alt tag, title tag AND product name? It seems to me they should be the same. Why change the product, name , image name, alt tag, and on the product page the title tag? I am working with a product that has the same base name but with more options and duplicate image file names but with different sizes of the image. Example... SLR Camera Strap with a dependable grip pad and nylon web is the core product. Options are kevlar web, rapid releases and then rapid releases with vectran cord or kevlar web. slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-kevlar-web_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-rapid-release-kevlar-web-ends_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-rapid-release-vectran-loop-ends_1500p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-large-web_1500p.jpg, Then... there will be the same image but with different sizes of the same images being built internally and held in the images folder for various devices such as slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_400p.jpg, slr-camera-strap-dependable-grip-pad-nylon-web_100p.jpg and on and on.... As a secondary question the file names are long but that is what it takes to describe it. If I remove the key yet repetitive base name XX camera-strap what I end up with is dependable-grip-pad-kevlar-web What to do? What to do?

Should I omit the street address for a delivery based business?
I have a client who has a small ready mix concrete delivery business. A couple months ago the client payed another agency to add their business to google places/business—whatever their calling it these days, and to bing places. So instead of the agency submitting the full address, and the full NAP, they just submitted the Name, City, State, and phone (left off the street address). I guess their rational was that by doing it this way, my client would show up for a more broad region instead of a small specific region for local search. It's been about 2-3 months now since the agency completed the work and I noticed that my client just started showing up on the maps today. When my client first hired me, I advised them to let me submit their full NAP, with the street address to Moz Local, and add the NAP micro-data to the footer of their website, with the hopes that google would start paying attention to their location and begin indexing and ranking their website. But after seeing their website begin to show up on the maps, I'm wondering if that's the right decision. So my question is: Should I submit the _full NAP—_with street address—to moz local, or should I submit the NAP without the street address? And depending on which of those I should do, how should I proceed with the google+ business page and the bing for places page?
