Wordpress SEO for ecommerce store
-
I have been working on a wordpress ecommerce website and want to check that I am doing something correctly so hope someone can help. The Wordpress theme did not allow for an introductory content so the developer built a content page Instead to work as a front end category page so there was more flexibility. I have set the product categories to follow- no index and set the content page as the canonical version and optimised the content page.. question is - is that the right thing to do?
-
Hi Allie! Did you work this out? We'd love an update.
-
Hi Dan - I have found that you can access the default product categories by using the internal search - so thanks for highlighting that possibility
-
Hi Allie
Yes, that sounds correct. You basically don't want to default category pages indexed, because you have custom ones now.
Also - if you don't even want users to find the default category pages at all (because it might confuse them etc) I would also make sure they are not linked to or otherwise accessible. There's no need for users to find them and for Google to be even crawling them. This might not be technically possible depending on your theme, and it won't be a huge detriment, but something to think about if you have control over it.

Hi andr,
haha all good I re read my question back and I was unclear in the fact that on the theme the product categories by default do not allow text on the page. If the developer had used short code to replicate the products in that non indexed category to show on the content page is that the correct thing to do. I hoped it was but starting to second doubt myself tbh

Hi Allie,
I think I understand what you are saying.
Just to clarify, are you asking if optimising the canonical page the right thing to do? It sounds to me like what you are doing is correct. No-indexing the category pages will help prevent duplication, or you could also canonical those back as well.

Why add .html to WordPress pages?
A site I may take over has a plugin that adds .html to the pages. I searched online but I’ve only found how to add it rather than why to add it. Is it needed? If I remove it, I’ll have to be careful with SEO / indexed pages and redirects. The site is running 3.x.x and 90% of the plugins have not been updated in over 5 years including this one. Before I update to 4.7.x, I am trying to understand the landscape (pros / cons) on why something could be used and if I need to find a suitable replacement for it.

Yoast settings for ecommerce site
Hello, I can't find the answer anywhere so I wonder if someone here could help? The ecommerce site I have has Yoast and Woocommerce installed. The Post Types tab under Titles and Metas has various options: Posts, pages, media, products, gift cards. There is also custom post type archives for products and gift cards. Should i noindex the media and also the custom post type archives for product and gift cards and if so why? What about the taxonomies for ecommerce? What's best practise? Noindex? I understand the settings for Yoast when its not an ecommerce site but this has kind of thrown me. Thanks

Wordpress Categories and Over-Optimization Question
I would like to switch my sidebar from listing Category Name with posts listed below each- to a concise custom menu. This custom menu would list the top three products I am promoting first, and then go on to list the categories on my site. Currently it looks like this (but with 6 categories, with between 7-10 items in each - this is on EVERY page) Widgets
Technical SEO | | PrivatePartners
-Green Widget
-Blue Widget Gidwets
-Big Gidwet
-Small Gidwet I rank well in google right now, but I am concerned that changing my sidebar will result in a penalty. Maybe for over-optimizing my top three products I promote, or possibly for trying to control the flow of link juice. Can anyone chime in here who has adjusted their site structure within wordpress, and tell me what you found worked best? ** Before anyone asks**, this structure does work much better for the user. My sidebar now is massive, and is confusing even to me.0 -

Using Canonical URLs option in Platinum SEO for Wordpress
SEOMOZ says that my site has 150 <a title="Click for Help!">Canonical URLs and lists that as a potential problem. It's a check box in the settings for Platinum SEO and here is the description it provides:</a> <a title="Click for Help!">Choose this option to set up canonical URLs for your Home page, Single Post, Category and Tag Pages.</a> I have the option engaged. So I was trying to figure out the best thing to do. I have already instructed it to automatically make 301 redirects for any permalink changes and have instructed it to "noindex" tag archives, rss comment feeds, and rss feeds. I've only been doing this for about a year and am really confused right now. After reading most of your posts about the subject I have a much better understanding, but still very confused. Help..Please...
