Is it okay to leave off H1 tags?
-
I know that SEO uses H1 and H2 mainly and there should only be one H1 and there can be multiple H2 tags. But the site I’m reviewing generally has no H1 on a page and multiple H2 tags. The Page Title reflects the title of the page, so maybe this is okay as is? They have the styling down just so, so I don’t want to make them change it if it’s okay.

It's worth changing it in my opinion. When I joined my company, they also didn't use H1 tags and essentially used Hx tags as styling tags (which they are not). Even just all the basic on-page SEO has had a very noticeable effect on traffic.
That said, if you are working to a deadline, I would say you have to weigh your priorities. Not using correct Hx structure won't kill your SEO, it's just a missed opportunity. So do it, but if it has to wait a while, it's not going to be a massive issue.
Changing the styling should be fairly easy. Simply copy the styling used for H2 to H1 and then update your website (template) to use H1 for the main header on each page.
H1 and page title don't have to be absolutely identical but it makes sense for them to be fairly similar. So yes, you can use keyword variations, but if they are too different that might make it look spammy - both need to accurately describe the content of the page.

Thank you! Yes we can do it stylistically no problem, but it's extra hours of work as we're trying to meet a deadline. I wondered if it was worth it but from what you say, it is for sure! I really appreciate the quick response, I recommend this change.
One more thing. It seems like the H1 would naturally be the same as the Page Title. Is this a wasted opportunity? Should we try to make the Page title the main keyword and the H1 slightly different, a related phrase to the page title?

Hello,
You are exactly right—there _should _be one (and only one) H1 tag on every page! While it is possible to rank organically without them, you are missing out a big opportunity to optimize your site if you do not include them in your content. If SEO is a priority in your site's function, I would highly recommend adding one H1 tag to every page. The visual design of websites is not a specialty of mine, but I believe that you can customize the styling of your H1 tags so that they do not change the look of your site.
Hope this helps!

Hi - How do you get rid of duplicate content that was accidentally created on a tag url? For example, when I published a new article, the content was duplicated on: /posts/tag/lead-generation/
the original article was created with: /posts/shippers-looking-for-freight-brokers/ How can I fix this so a new URL is not created every time I add a tag to a new posting?

Titling and H1 Tag Question
What to do if you have hundreds of thousands of a particular product. Comic Books for example. Is it ok to have the words Comic Book in the title and H1 tag as long as it is qualified? For example, if I have the following as both the Title tag and the H1 tag. Comic Book - Spider Man Versus Wolverine Comic Book - Silver Surfer Goes Home to Visit Mom. Comic Book - Superman Gets a New Kitten Comic Book - Wonder Woman is More Wonderful Than You Know As of now, I have been doing it this way, but only in the title tag. However, Google has been using my H1 tag as my title, so in the search results, I am only getting: "Superman Gets a New Kitten" And I am afraid that that is leaving out important info for searchers, especially qualifying that the product is a Comic Book and if someone is searching for a Comic Book, I need that to return. But I don't want any 'more' trouble from the Panda. Again, this will be hundreds of thousands of products. Thanks for your help! Craig

Benefits of having a Title-Tag that fits on the SERP
Has anyone seen any case studies that show that title-tags that fit on the page (http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool) have a higher ctr than title-tags that don't fit? I know it's been said that keywords past the pixel limit still matter but if there's a major benefit to ctr for title-tags that fit....Any thoughts?

How to handle long dynamic meta tags?
Hi All, I have a site that has upwards of 40 000 pages and I'm redeveloping it so really want to get some SEO elements spot on for the new development. Hoe do I go about handling the following: The user creates a title for their advert which I use as the meta title. The problem is titles are quite often longer that the accepted lengths. How should I handle this? String manipulation down to the desired size, leave it as is or is there another solution? The meta descriptionn is pulled from a summary they created as part of their profile. Is this the right way to do it? Any advice would be appreciated. Ross

Could incorrect H1 tag stop a page ranking?
A few weeks ago I added an image to the top of each page and somehow (I've only just noticed) the image was inside an h1 tag. Presumably this would be the first element google would crawl and would it consider the image the h1 possibly confusing google about the pages content? My actual h1 further down the page would then possible be disregarded by google? The pages I am talking about have dropped in google and I wonder if this could have been the issue?

Changing Link Title Tags & Backlinks
On 4/19/12 I began changing the link title tags in an effort to further optimize my website. I thought they were excessively long and it would be beneficial to make them more concise. On 4/26/12 my website traffic began to fall drastically and I'm not sure if it is from google's penguin update or from changing the link title tags. I started looking into the sudden drop of traffic and realized that when I run the site explorer tool on all of the pages I changed, the URL is redirecting. It appears that the backlinks are not passing through to the new URL. Before I Changed the Link Title Tag: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.beautystoponline.com%2FAndis-Professional-Hair-Clippers-s%2F102150.htm **After I Changed the Link Title Tag: ** http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/links?site=www.beautystoponline.com%2FAndis-Clippers-s%2F102150.htm So my questions are: The above example shows that the old title tag (www.beautystoponline.com/Andis-Professional-Hair-Clippers-s/102150.htm) has 43 backlinks and the new one (www.beautystoponline.com/Andis-Professiona-Hair-Clippers-s/102150.htm) has 0. Will the links eventually be attributed to the new URL. I understand that the user will still be directed to my website they click the any of the backlinks, but will the link juice pointing the old URL pass through the new one? Would it be better, in the long run, to continue optimizing the link title tags.

Meta description tags & title tags duplicate content?
Although meta description tags have no impact on rankings - can there be a negative effect from having many duplicate meta title + description tags with just 1-2 words switched out?
