Conversions tracking on another website
-
Hi guys,
Situation: A website selling a mix of products from various vendors. When a product's Buy Now get clicked, it redirects to the vendor's website so the order can be placed there.
Question: How do I track all these conversions reliably? Is there any shortcut? Also, what do they need to do technically to make it work, and will it send to my GA or is it any tool that will record these conversions?
Does anyone do this actively?
Thanks for ALL the ANSWERS!

Many thanks. I'll start from here. Katarina

I am not the greatest resource in the affiliate marketing world, but have handles a few projects on the subject. In my experience, affiliate links do track conversions, and work similar to a UTM code. From my experience with setting up an affiliate store on Shopify, we utilized lead dyno and it worked well. From managing multiple vendors to keeping track of their behaviors and affiliate earnings. This is transparency.
The cross domain conversion tracking would work as well. This would involve your vendors placing a specific js code on their site...so, margin for error is higher. Unless you do it all. Either way, its A or B from my perspective.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for your answer, Kris. So how does the whole 'affiliate' ecommerce work? Where you don't deal with a platform, but individual vendors? How do you make it transparent?
I can imagine I could see Campaigns tracked in their analytics - this could quite work. But the vendors need to be into digital marketing which not all of them will be.
The next thing - can I add a tag that will be carried over to their Thank You page and this will trigger in MY analytics as a goal conversion (cross-domain)? In an ideal world, I don't want the vendors to do anything, I would set it up by myself; and I don't want to rely on campaign links they have to present me with. Imagine 200 vendors!!
Would GTM do the job??
Thanks. Katarina

You need to setup Tag manager and track external links and setup GTM codes. But to measure conversion on another site, you will need to have your hands on that site as well.

Hi! there is no way to track the activity once it leaves your website unless the vendor places a tracker for you on their page OR redirect to a sort of "thank you page" that is placed on your website.

My website under a penalty how to recover from it
Hello Moz community I am running an amazon affiliate blog and from the last 8 months it was going great but 2 months before i noticed that un-natural and spammy chinese anchors links are getting indexed and they were getting indexed continuosely day by day. I thought there is no problem with that so few of my fellows said its not a big deal so i didn't take any action. Within few days my rankings dropped and keep dropping continuously and from featured snippet i moved to page 9th of google. Can anybody help me with how should i take steps to remove the penalty.I think that site is hit by penguin. My only page http://17oxen.com/best-external-hard-drives is affected and all the spammy links were indexed on this link all other remaining articles are not affecred as google said that they will penalize only the specific page not the whole domain. Guys i would like to know your recommendations and any kind of help. Thanks

Affiliate website redirection concern
First of all i want to say hi to everyone here since im a new guy! The issue: My website is a price comparison website. I create products and inside these products i list several shops with their priced offers from the lowest to the highest. When a customer clicks the "shop now" button to go to the desired shop a new window pops up telling the user that he is being redirected to that shop. Check the website here and click "shop now" to understand what i mean: https://www.pccdkeys.com/product/buy-world-of-warcraft-legion-cd-key-for-battlenet/ This pop up page is a custom .php called redirect.php. In order to create a unique url for each shop, we add parameters in every URL like this: /redirect.php?id=5030917189616&merchant=CDKEYS&game=4117. The redirect.php right now is under this setting: custom header 301 without destination URL (which probably is wrong) it is noindex, follow in meta robots the parameters: **id, merchant, game **are set to NO URL's in URL parameters in webmaster tools. If i remove the 301 redirect from the header it will lead to 200 OK but then its a soft 404 error because the page is small and for sure i dont want 8000 of soft 404 errors because google phantom will destroy me. Another setting was: No custom header so it was 200 OK noindex, nofollow (which was for extra protection from the disallow) disallowed in robots.txt Thi setting kept giving soft 404 errors in audits. I also had it with this setting: custom header 301 without destination URL meta robots in index, follow without disallow in robots This setting gave me Not followed errors in google webmaster tools. The question: Which is the proper setting for this php page? Maybe a combination of the above? Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Advise about Social Sharing between two loosely affiliated website - (retweets/fb cross sharing)
So basically, I have two websites. One being my Primary website and another which is very Niche/Seasonal. Now the Niche website received a penalty, and was later re-included however google traffic has been extremely limited since being reindexed. (bing never had a problem, still top ranked) I don't directly link back and forth between the two websites because its not worth hurting my primary websites ranking. I'm sure google knows I own both anyway, as they are on the same webmaster tools but the Niche site was kicked for spammy link building & its been an endless process removing them all. Anyway, with that being my concern. Would it be acceptable to cross share facebook posts, retweet and do things like that on occasion? My primary reason for asking is because the Niche website has a very large social following, so I would like to share post/tweets from my Primary site when its relevant and vice versa. Appreciate any suggestions/comments. Thanks!

Find My Missing AdWords Conversions! (my white whale)
Hello! I hope someone can help shed some light on this issue for me because I have searched far and wide for answers to no avail. So, without further ado, here goes... The destination URL's in our AdWords ads are affiliate redirects with "Google" as the Affiliate Code. Since our products are according to license, we have different price points for the same item number. We cannot get accurate earnings through AdWords. The affiliate redirect records the Google conversion in our store which gives us the ability to associate a dollar amount with conversions as well as compare the number of conversions against what is stated in the AdWords interface. The problem is that AdWords consistently shows significantly more conversions than our store's affiliate code reflects. For example: AdWords Conversions for March 2013: 31 Store Orders Showing Google Affiliate ID for March 2013: 19 So judging from those numbers it looks like 12 conversions were lost from AdWords reporting to the reporting in our online store. I have checked and double checked that our destination URL's are uniform in their formatting and have the appropriate "Google" affiliate code, so they should be recorded. Does anyone have any insight or experience with this? Is it possible that our affiliate cookie is somehow being dropped as the user is redirected to the landing page via the destination URL? 12 conversions is a pretty significant difference and since those conversions seem to be getting lost on the way to our store, that's revenue that i'm not able to add to determine the true ROI of the effort. Can anyone help?

Best way to start affiliate marketing a new mens magazine website?
I have just started up a new mens magazine website featuring articles, videos, sports news and photos to help drive traffic to the website. I write all the articles myself and do the social media updates in my spare time. I was wondering if anyone has any tips on the best way to start doing affiliate marketing for a new website? I was inspired to do this by successful internet marketers who make a passive income off their websites. So far I have added Amazon and William Hill as affiliate links as I think my target market will be looking for these types of product links. Also, for anyone who has experience in this, how long it taken for your blog to become successful and make money? Many thanks, Alex

Google Analytics Tracking Pixels for Third-Party sites???
Hello, Does anyone know if it is possible to track an event on a third party site and have it post back to your Google Analytics account? For example, I am sending traffic to a partners site and I want to know if that traffic I am sending them will hit a specific point of conversion (a sale) and I'm wondering if it possible to place a tracking pixel on their thankyou.html page that gets recorded in my google analytics?
