Huge Ranking drop without touching the page
-
I was ranked #5 for the keyword "Become a Sportscaster" - had been in the top 10 for months, then all of a sudden dropped to #46. I haven't touched this page in a few months, so I don't think I messed anything up.
Any thoughts on why such a dramatic drop would happen?

Hi Brian,
I believe the recently introduced SEOmoz Ranking process is currently in Beta (I am in the Beta group) and Casey did specifically ask for feedback on any apparent anomalies during the Beta testing phase.
Just caught up with Casey and the answer will be slightly different depending on whether you are a member of the Beta or not, so just a correction to my original comment:
- If you are not in the Beta then you should email support [at] seomoz.org
- If you are a member of the Rankings Beta and forgot - email the Beta team!
This being the case, it would probably be a good idea to email him direct to bring the issue to his attention.

appreciate the response dvtruong - I worked with Angie for many years, back when I was the news director at Fox Sports Northwest - great lady. Anyway back to SEO - we've started getting more links for cnn.com, a bunch of edu's and some other big sports sites - so I hope to see our overall numbers increase. Quality content is our main priority so glad to see we are on the right track, we only lauched in NOvember last year so I know its a slow ramp..
thanks again for the insight.
Brian
p.s. we're in seattle too.

Someone else reported a similar issue with their SEOmoz ranking report. I would suggest contacting the Help Desk so they can investigate the issue. It seems like a bug.

interesting ryan thanks - I actually was referring to the ranking from my SEOMOZ crawl this past week... so no operator error. According to my ranking report I dropped from 5 to 46 last week and then from 46 to 48 this week.
guess its an seomoz reporting issue if you still see it ranked 5th.

I called a friend who works at Google and he restored your ranking to the #5 spot.
Ok, I am teasing but only a bit. I took a look and in Google.com I see you ranked #5 for the term "Become a Sportscaster". Perhaps when you checked the term was slightly altered. An extra space, a missing space, adding a plural, etc. can all change the search results.

It could be a lot of things. Google makes changes to their ranking algorithm about 400 times a year, so they may have turned a knob that happened to affect your site a lot.
I checked out your site and it looks like it has a lot of quality content so I don't think the Panda Update would have been a factor. I liked the Angie Mentink interview - I know her well since I'm in Seattle.
I would not worry too much about one single phrase because it is probably driving a very small percentage of your overall traffic. How is your organic search traffic overall? That is much more important than a single phrase since 70% of search traffic are from long tail searches. I would recommend continuing to pump out remarkable content that people want to share and you should be in good shape in the long run. It looks like your site has 58 linking domains according to Open Site Explorer. Increasing this number over time should help with more competitive phrases.

Strange - Search Console page indexing "../Detected" as 404
Anyone seen this lately? All of a sudden Google Search Console is insisting in Page indexing that there is a 404 for a page that has never existed on our client's site: https://........com.au/Detected We've noticed this across a number of sites, precisely in this way with a capitalised "/Detected" To me it looks like something spammy is being submitted to the SERPs (somehow) and Google is trying to index that and then getting a 404. Naturally MOZ isn't picking it up, cause the page simply never existed - it's just happening in Search Console 2afc7e35-71e4-4e25-80a3-690bf10776a7.png It comes and it goes in the 404 alerts in Console and is really annoying. I reckon it started happening late 2022.

SEO Effect of inserting No indexed Contents in normal Pages (Nextgen Gallery)
Hello Dear Community, I'm running a photography website and have a question about the indexability of "No indexed Content" inserted on indexable pages. Background : I read everywhere that best practice is to "no index" all useless pages with few content, what I did with Yoast plugin : I no indexed all my nextgen galleries and "ngg_tags" since they create single pages for every photo, tags or slideshow. I did the same for all my porfolio-posts, price lists, testimonials and so on... Nevertheless, I inserted these galleries and portfolios on SEO optimized page for my target keywords. + Nextgen plugin automatically adds these images in the page sitemap. My idea is to have only my Seo optimized page showing in Google and not the others. Problem: I've been checking the results in Google Search Console, filtering by images : I discovered that most of the images featured in these Masonry galleries are not showing in google, and actually almost all the images indexed are the Wordpress from media gallery. I double checked with Screaming Frog, and the software doesn"t see images on these pages. My question is: Is the low indexablilty of these contents are related to the No indexation of the original contents ??? Does somebody has experienced the same issue that these contents doesn't show on Google ? in advance many thanks for your help

When my new website went live I saw a huge spike in traffic for 3 weeks but then it halved again. Why would this happen?
My new website went live on 13th April and the organic traffic levels increased by 110%, staying at that level for 3 weeks. Then exactly 3 weeks later the organic traffic halved again, going back to the same level as the old site. Has anyone seen this happen before or worked out why?! Thanks Viki P2R76O9

No-indexed pages are still showing up as landing pages in Google Analytics
Hello, My website is a local job board. I de-indexed all of the job listing pages on my site (anything that starts with http://www.localwisejobs.com/job/). When I search site:localwisejobs.com/job/, nothing shows up. So I think that means the pages are not being indexed. When I look in Google Analytics at Acquisition > Search Engine Optimization > Landing Pages, none of the job listing pages show up. But when I look at Acquisition > Channels > Organic and then click Landing Page as the primary dimension, the /job pages show up in there. Why am I seeing this discrepency in Organic Landing pages? And why would the /job pages be showing up as landing pages even though they aren't indexed?

Longevity of robot.txt files on Google rankings
This may be a difficult question to answer without a ton more information, but I'm curious if there's any general thought that could shed some light on the following scenario I've recently heard about and wish to be able to offer some sound advice: An extremely reputable non-profit site with excellent ranking had gone through a re-design and change-over into WordPress. A robots.txt file was used during development on the dev site on the dev server. Two months later it was noticed through GA that traffic was way down to the site. It was then discovered that the robot.txt file hadn't been removed and the new site (same content, same nav) went live with it in place. It was removed and a site index forced. How long might it take for the site to re-appear and regain past standing in the SERPs if rankings have been damaged. What would the expected recovery time be?

Why is a section of our website dropping in&out of Google SERPs?
In July 2011 we started a news section that has it's own 'subfolder' /news/ (http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/, http://www.chorder.com/news/gear_deals/ etc.) The whole news section is dropping in&out of Google SERP's since late October, as show in attached graph. All news texts are real deal, written by our own staff, linked from homepage. Any idea why this happens and how to prevent it? cmqky.png
