Non www indexed, will this effect rankings?
-
Hi,
I have a domain which has the non www domain indexed.
I did start link building using the www in the URL, will this not work as well?
So,
domain indexed is footballboots.co.uk (fictitious)
I start building backlinks using www.footballboots.co.uk.
Should I have started building backlinks using footballboots.co.uk for this to work better?
Cheers

Once you've chosen your domain of choice as Tommy as explained by using 301 re-directs. It's probably a good idea to throw the other domain in link building occasionally. For example if you settle with http://www.footballboots.co.uk then your link building should focus around using that URL, but you should also use http://footballboots.co.uk sometimes as it helps to make your link profile look more natural.
If you imagine that other people were creating natural links to your site, they're not always going to use the URL you prefer are they?

I see, you need to add both the www and non-www version in GWT + verify them both, then you can choose the preferred setting.

Thanks,
I have tried that in webmaster tools, I set it up verified the website by adding the tracking code, at this point I can add a sitmap etc BUT when I try to set the www prefix it says you need to verify before you can.
Well guess what webmaster tools, I already have.

Hi!
First of all, think of the adress that you want to promote, www.footballboots.co.uk or footballboots.co.uk ? Maybe you are using the www-version in offline marketing, it is important that you choose one and always use that one wherever you show yourself.
When you have decided which one to use we come to the technical part, lets say you choose the www-version.
If someone goes to footballboots.co.uk they should be sent to www.footballboots.co.uk by a redirect 301. This redirect will forward the majority of the link juice from non-www to the www-version. The main thing is to have one unique url that displays unique content.
You can also log into Google Webmaster Tools and tell Google what you prefer, non-www or the www-version, it will fix the address in SERP.
Then continue the great work, building links to the url of your choice (www-version in my example).
I hope this will help you!

What are the possible effects of a small blog migration on an existing link profile?
Hi all, We're in the process of a small migration of blog content, and I'm interested to know how the change will affect our link profile. We currently have a small blog on a separate domain from our main business website. This small blog (with around 248 pages and a 14 DA) was originally set up many years ago to support the main business site, however we've reviewed our content strategy to start incorporating the posts from this site to our main business domain. As this small blog was set up as a support to the main domain, it contains many links to our main domain which will essentially disappear once the content has been migrated. We're following all best practices in this migration, however there is one questions which is still unclear with this process. Will this small migration of content and loss of hundreds of links from one domain have a negative effect on our existing link profile of our main business site?

Link credit www vs non-www?
I have noticed that when I run the open explorer on my website that I get a different list of linking domains depending on if the back link used www or not. I always ask and specify to use the non-www but many people do not pay a lot of attention to that? I have set up 301 from www to the non-www as the non-www is my primary URL. How do i get credits for the 50+ that are pointing to the www?

Page Rank Update
I was hit by Google’s latest Page Rank update. I know “don’t be obsessed with Page Rank”, but it concerns me. I thought that I was developing a very good link profile and actually was hopeful that it would go to a PR-5 and it dropped to a PR-3. www.simply-bags.com I have another site www.keepsakes-etc.com and have done very little link building and it also dropped to a PR-3. Can anyone give me some honest feedback about my concern?

Should I 301 Redirect The index.html Page?
Hello, As an experiment I am trying to work with an SBI site but am noticing index.html is being forced on me as the homepage. As I understand it's good practice to 301 redirect the index.html page to the to the actual home page. Can someone please confirm that I am right in thinking this? Here is an example: http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/index.html

http://www.anguilla-beaches.com/ According to yahoo 773 links are pointing to the index.html page and 771 links are pointing to the / page. I'm sure Google knows that these are the same pages and does not consider them as duplicate but surely the index.html page should be redirected right? am I going mad here? Now if we look at this site: http://www.jugglenow.com the homepage has 198 links according to yahoo
http://www.jugglenow.com/index.html this page also has 198 links? now I am confused, are these 2 the same page? On this page: http://www.jugglenow.com/juggling-balls.html notice how there is no link to the actual homepage but there is a link to the index.html page. Am I missing something here because I can't figure it out, surely there should be just 1 homepage without a index.html page. Any help would be appreciated0 -

Do http:// links to a http://www. site count the same to Google?
In terms of links to one's site helping your position on Google, if your site defaults to http://www.example.com (automatically adds "www." even if it isn't typed), does Google count links that appear as http://example.com (without the www.) with the same "weight"? Thanks.
