Why traffic to my link has dropped suddenly?
-
Hi I would like to know why the traffic for the website link http://theindustrymeasure.com/2010/07/15/rediffmail-login has dropped suddenly on google.I used to get around 5000 page views on this page and then suddenly dropped to 15-20 . I still get good traffic from yahoo (around 500). Just before the drop I noticed that I started to get spammy trackbacks from Many questionable sources. I have not approved any of these trackbacks. The trackbacks are regular frequency of. 1 per day. is there any action which I can take to ensure that I get back my traffic. Traffic to other links are fine , only this page seems to have dropped off ever since the spam attack. As per seomoz tool I have a grade a for keyword rediffmail

Are there specific keywords you were ranking on that drove traffic to this page. I don't see that this page has many direct links, and it's not optimized for any popular terms, so I'm surprised that login form was getting much direct traffic.
Is it possible your internal link architecture changed? Maybe you're pulling a ton of search traffic to the home-page, but it's not getting pulled through to the deeper page now?
I'm also a bit confused, because Rediff.com is an outside site service. If you can explain what you were ranking for and dig into the specifics, that would certainly help.
It also appears that you had some pretty strong social signals to that page. It's possible that those gave you a strong short-term rankings boost, but that it faded over time. The social signals aren't as long-lasting as permanent links.

Thanks Keri,
I caught this later and should have edited. As to the original though.....how many times can you say rediffMail......
To me, this type of content - and this one by using instructions does it better than most - with the constant keyword repetition is just a poor way to try and gain ranking.

Santosh - Check out this blog post regarding a link profile tool - It may help you track down your 'bad' links
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/link-profile-tool-to-discover-linking-activity
-
yeah i have checked , there is no message there
-
Diane, can you ask this in a separate thread please so we can move the answers to that question? It's a little confusing to the reader right now when the original question is about an email site and the first answer is about a hypnotherapy site. =]
-
Have you checked your Google Webmaster Tools account for any messages from Google that are warning you of anything? That's the next step that I would take.
-
Quick note to the reader that this is answering a comment from another answer, not the original poster's question (though a great answer).

Well put by Vitalscom. He went to the site, looked it over, and diagnosed the problem. This is just overkill with keywords, etc. Follow the advice given, make the content readable, etc. for example: http://www.cardiffhypnotherapy.com/Anger-Management-Therapy.html
In the first paragraph there are two sentences with three internal links (anger management therapy appears twice, anger management classes once) back to the same page where the links are all for the purpose of stuffing keywords/links into the paragraph. In the first three sentences you say the same phrase five times and the titles before and after those three sentences are also Anger Management Therapy.
Here is what a response to this question would look like using the same methodology of writing:

OK, would you really want to read that????? Think about it. Content really is king. Content really is king. Content really is king..... Just kidding there
Good Luck, Good Question,

Spammy links include things such as link directories, link farms and generally any domain that appears to be a directory. There are other forms of spam link, but you generally have to look at your links and make a judgement call on whether a site linking to you looks spammy or not (not all directories are spammy, so you need to make a judgement call on this as well).
One measure I use is how many links a domain has going into it vs. the amount of domains these come from. If the number of links is many, many times higher then it could be a dubious site.
Regarding your cardiffhyno site, Vitalscom is correct in his advice, it wouldn't surprise me if a google algorithm has picked up on things like your footer and devalued the site.
-
I think you really need to take a strong look at your own site. You are using some known spam techniques on your pages and it wouldn't surprise me that Google is finally penalizing you for trying to game them. Also, you may be trying too hard to fit your keyphrase on the page and the bot may feel that this is a spam technique. For starters, I would get rid of this entire footer:

hi i think this has also happened to my site, can you explain what you mean by spammy links and also about getting links removed.
I had a site http://www.cardiffhypnotherapy.com which vanished from the first page and we also had a good keyword for that site gastric band hypnotherapy and that keyword came on the first page but now that has vanished.
One of the problems we have is, we have a compeditor who has been playing silly games and trying to make problems for our site, and since they started this our traffic has been reduced by about 80% and we are not sure how they are doing what they are doing.
-
If you have been subjected to malicious link building towards your site, then most of the time it shouldn't make any difference. As long as you have a good link profile to start with (from reputable trustworthy sources) then adding a load of spammy links shouldn't hurt you. Google recognise that this sort of thing can happen and therefore only normally penalise people who have a 100% spammy link profile.
However, if you feel that your site is affected by this and you have ruled out other things, including any low quality pages you may have on your own site which are bringing it down, I would do the following;
-
Try and get these links removed. Contact the site owners involved and ask for removal
-
File a reconsideration request to google explaining what has happened. Make sure you try and get rid of thse links first and tell google you've done your best to get them removed from linking to your site.
Make sure everything is as legitimate as you can before doing this and all being well, you'll be back on top.

Sudden Rankings Drop for Good Keywords.. Did I Do This? Please Help :(
Hello, I noticed a gradual rankings drop for 3 important keywords over the last month, with a pretty big plummet the last two weeks. Overall in the last month+ we dropped from position 9 to 41.I noticed this when I dug further after noticing traffic dropping since February (not a drastic traffic drop). I should note that the keywords took people to my client's homepage. Their branded keywords have no suffered and I looked at a couple others that haven't either. Now, there is a link in the site footer (we have site wide header and footer) that takes you to a static page that contains links for the 2 digital flipbook catalogs the customer has (one for US and one for Canada). My concern is that at the end of January I had a developer implement a noindex/nofollow meta robot & robots.txt disallow specifically on the HTML pages/URL of the Canadian catalog ONLY. It specifically pointed to that flipbook URL. This catalog is nearly identical to the US catalog and I thought I'd be eliminating duplicate content and helping with crawl budget. After looking further into it last week (reading up about internal nofollows not necessarily being detrimental, but not recommended) and noticing the drop in search visibility traffic (starting gradually in March), I had the disallow/nofollow removed. This was last week, and over this last week the traffic took an even bigger drop (not amazingly drastic but enough to be concerned) and I noticed the keywords that we did ok for dropped even more this last week (down to 41). I'm concerned this has to do with the change I made at the end of January and reversed back. I should note that I don't think these catalogs or the static page that links to them brought any traffic. The keywords I am concerned about fell on our homepage (where the link to the static page that contains the links to both catalogs is in the sitewide footer) The catalogs are a couple hundred pages. I honestly don't see how this could do it, unless it has something to do with the footer being sitewide? There have been site upgrades/dev changes over the last couple months too (although I am not sure if that affected other clients who received the same upgrade), so this is hard to pinpoint. Sorry this is so long but I'd appreciate someone offering some insight to help ease my mind a bit!

Breadcrumbs versus in context link
Hi, I remember reading that links within the text have more value than breadcrumbs links for example because in context links are surrounded by the right content (words) but google search engine optimisation starter guide says breadcrumbs are good, so which one is recommended ? Thank you,

Linking to External Websites?
Is it good to link external websites from every page. Since, the on-page grader shows there should be one link pointing to an external source. I have a website that can point to an external website from every page using the brand name of the specific site like deal sites do have. Is it worth having external link on every page, of-course with a no-follow tag?

Big Drop in Traffic, No change in Position
Penguin 2.0 was a great update for one of my biggest client. A website that was using terrible black hat techniques and ranked first on the most important keyword in my clients niche got kickt from the SERP's and my client jumped from 4th to 1st. The jump in traffic was enormous and on top of that 5% of the traffic converted instead of the usual 2,5%- 3% on other traffic. Untill July 2nd. Traffic from the keyword dropped by 80% while we were still in position 1, after a lot of digging I thaught I found what caused it, Google booted the keyword from their autofill. My question is if anyone has seen a removal from tthe autocomplete making that big of a difference in search volume.

Internal Javascript Links
Hi, We have a client who has internal links pointing to some relatively new pages that we asked them to implement. The problem is that instead of using standard HTML links, their developers have used javascript - e.g. javascript:GoTo... The new pages have links from the homepage (among others) and have been live for about 3-4 weeks now - yet are still to be indexed by Google, Bing & Yahoo. Is it possibe that Javascript links are making them difficult to be found? Thanks in advance for any tips.

How should I handle these links?
I recently purchased a site which is in the same niche as my personal blog. MANY of the keywords which I want both sites to rank for, they are already ranking well for (Eg I rank #1 with one site and #5 for the other). I haven't started linking the two sites to each other yet (waiting to announce the acquisition before I do). I have 2 questions for you all... How powerful do you think linking between these sites could be? How do you think I should handle the linking between these two sites?
