Redirect or not to redirect
-
We are rebuilding a website and try to get rid of errors. The content remains exactly the same but we correct the code and make it load faster. The site has quite many backlinks and I can't decide whether to remove .html endings from the urls and 301 redirect to the new ones or leave them with the older ending. If I remove the endings how much of the link juice will be passed?
Anyone any idea?

in a year of 2, will you then decide to make the change? only you know that, it is better to do it sooner than later if you think you may.
As for leaking link juice, the best guess is 15% going from the original algo google published, every hop lost 15% I dont think they would of changes this much as changing it can mean huge amounts if calulating, I believe they got it right then and it would still be right.
If hops did not lose pr, the caculations of PR would be endless.

Agree, keep the .html

I can't decide whether to remove .html endings from the urls and 301 redirect to the new ones or leave them with the older ending.
If you redirect you will lose some linkvalue and some anchor text value.
I have learned to tolerate "untidy little things" that are very expensive to change. I don't want to put 5-10% (just tossing out a number) more effort into ranking my site just to get rid of .html endings.

Well 301's typically have a tiny falloff of link juice (I've heard somewhere in the 5% range anecdotally). But i would think about what makes sense to your users over that. Does having that .html make the urls harder to remember for a user to type in? Is it .htm or .html?
I don't use .html because it is an extra thing to remember. And by not using it, I can have shorter urls that focus more on being simple and having keywords.
As far as 301ing, you could probably write something in your .htaccess file that automatically does that for the entire site.
But I would be inclined to get rid of them.

Redirect By IP location
Hi All, I have a client who operates in multiple countries with the sub directory structure. In AU for their main brand name .com site still ranks in the first position but /au ranks for most of the other terms. Current we have a 301 redirect in place for .com for anyone accessing the site from AU to /au. This is only for home pages as other .com pages don't rank in Australia. Just wondering what implication this can have on our SEO campaign. Cheers

Is there a tool to see all redirects?
I'm thinking this is a silly question, but I've never had to deal with it I thought I'd ask. Ok is there a tool out there that will show all the redirects to a domain. I'm working on a project that I keep stumbling on urls that redirect to the site I'm studying. They don't show up in Open Site or ahrefs as linking domains, but they keep popping up on me. Any thoughts?

Safe way to auto geo redirect
Hi, looking for a second opinion on this please.... I own a couple of web stores, one targets UK and the other USA (they are both the same store more or less just different products targeted at different location). The uk runs on a .co.uk domain and the US on a .us domain. Is there a safe way that I could auto redirect search engine traffic to the right location? Let's say the toys page of the .co.uk is ranking well in google uk and appears high in google us too, obviously I would want the USA users to visit the toys page for the US store rather than the UK one. Ideally I would employ a geo redirect script so if a USA user clicks on the UK domain they are redirected to the USA site but would Google frown on that? Hope that makes sense? Thanks

302 to 301 redirect confirmation
Hi guys, Fairly sure of the answer from what I've read so far, but I just wanted to doublecheck I have it right. Page A gets a significant amount of referring, followed traffic, and also ranks in Google. Page A uses a 302 redirect to Page B (on a completely different domain), which means that 0% of Page A's link juice is being passed on to Page B. If I were to change the 302 redirect to a 301 redirect, then the link juice passed on to Page A from the followed, referring traffic will be (mostly) passed on to Page B. Is that correct? Cheers, Jez

Should I change a 301 redirect?
I recently moved all the content from an old site to a new site on a new domain. I lost a significant amount of traffic as a result. There are 301 redirects for every page on the old site. Generally, these point to the same content as was on the relevant page of the old site. However, the 301 redirect for the homepage on the old site points to the homepage on the new site, not to the content from the old site homepage. I'm wondering whether to change the 301 to point at the content from the old site homepage. Any advice would be much appreciated.

301 redirect or 302
A client of mine has an international company named www.taxglobalizers.com if you come from Holland they 302 redirect you to the www.taxglobalizers.com/en version of the site and if you come from Holland they redirect with a 302 to www.taxglobalizers.com/nl version. I think it is best to change this in a 301 redirect. Am i correct in this? Kind Regards, Ruud
