Do social signals pass through a 301 redirect?

Does value from social signals have the ability to pass through a 301 redirect?
-
Hi Bimmer,
Thanks a lot for reporting your results.
I agree that it is easy for Google to figure out that if Page A 301 redirects to Page B (regardless of which domain each page is on), they can look up the Opengraph counts for both the old Page A and the new Page B and pass the value to Page B.
They just haven't publicly acknowledged doing so. That said, Google is a data monster, and OG is open. There's no chance on earth they're not trying to make the most of whatever of that data they can touch.
In regards to people changing the OG:url property, I know that there is a way to do that, but, I personally would prefer any new likes to apply to the new domain, and not to an old URL. If Google comes out and says they're passing social value of 301s, then I might reconsider that belief.
Thanks again for your feedback, very helpful!

I recently 301 redirected an old domain to a new domain...
Facebook:
Unfortunately, Facebook Likes don't pass through. I have read a few articles that recommend editing the meta property og:url to the old URL, as well as changing the data_href on the Like button to the old URL. But I haven't seen it work, and the Facebook Object Debugger throws an error.Google+
The +1's from the old domain did transfer to my new domain. I can tell that the +1 counter didn't start from 0 again, plus, since I +1'd a couple of my own pages last year on the old domain, I can see those +1's in my Google+ profile. It shows me that I did indeed +1 pages on the old domain last year, and if I go to those pages on the new domain now, the +1 button is red and lets me know that I publicly +1 it. It looks like those transfer just fine.So Google+ share counts seem to transfer, but not FB Likes. Is there a way that Google can know a page on the old domain has a lot of FB likes, and even though the count doesn't transfer to the new domain, they use the old domain social signal and pass its authority to the new domain? The more I think about it, probably.
My old domain had importance, and soon after the 301 my new domain seemed to reap a lot of the old domains value. Even if Google can't pull up my old FB Like count in the same way that I can't, there's probably still a social signal value that Google has stored.
So the more I think about this, even though my FB Like Count for a specific page went from 2000 Likes on the old URL to 0 Likes on the new URL, I think Google still passed that authority to the new URL. I don't have hard facts, just what I've observed. I do wish I could get my old Like Counts back though.

We know that when you change the permalink structure of a site, that page loses it's "button count" for Facebook likes, Tweets, and LinkedIn shares. The Facebook opengraph doesn't currently support any sort of URL changes, regardless of redirects in place on the site itself.
It is very hard to say whether or not Google has implemented the ability to (A) detect a 301 redirect, (B) check the opengraph stats for that former URL (since they can't check twitter or linkedin to my knowledge), and (C) apply those stats to the new URL. This is essentially the process that they'd have to go through in order to pass any value from social likes, etc.
I haven't seen any testing that would suggest either way. My hunch is that they don't.

Do we expect Google+ to continue being an important ranking signal after its recent changes?
I've noticed that Google Plus seems to have a larger influence on ranking than other social networks, especially for one of our competitors. We haven't started using Google Plus, and I'm wondering if, from an SEO standpoint, it's worth putting energy into after last month's changes. TL;DR: After last month's changes, is Google Plus still an important ranking signal?

Social Media Causing Duplicate Content
Recently, I spent some time in the SEO MOZ Crawl Diagnostics, and found that I have 40 pages that are being listed as “duplicate content.” These are original blog posts, but I made the mistake of sharing on social media immediately after publishing each post. I recently found out that if you post on a blog and on social on the same day, Google indexes the social first, and then up to 2 weeks later indexes the actual blog post. When it does, it stamps the blog post as duplicate and the social media posting as the original. Any ideas on how I can rectify this? Any code I can put in each blog post to let Google know they’re the original? I’ve begun publicizing my blogs on social 14 days after I actually publish them to alleviate the issue going forward, but I’d like my 40 other blog posts to get the authority they deserve.

Redirecting a page loved my Pintrest
Hi all, I'm after some advice on how best to redirect or retain any value a page might have from it's social shares (mainly Pintrest & a little FB). The page's original purpose was to be useful for people and hopefully pass some Google Juice to the main product page. I've created a new website and 301'd the pages to their new home. Now I'm going through my blog and I have a few pages that continue to get pinned around on Pintrest. Not sure the best way to retain the value. I was thinking of recreating the page on the new site and setting up a 301 redirect but I'm not sure if Pintrest follows along. Or maybe leaving the page on the old site and having a link to my main product page there (and it passing some value to the new domain). What do you think? Any other ideas that would be better? The page is: http://www.bringyourownlaptop.com.au/news/indesign-shortcuts-that-will-change-your-life/ The new home is www.byol.com.au. Thanks in advance Moz'ers! Dan

Duplicating content on more than one social network
I am just getting in to social media for my company and i can find an answer to my questions. Different people give a different answer. Question: i have written a post and uploaded it to our Google+ page. If i upload the same post / content to our Facebook page, will this fall foul of the 'duplicate content' rule with Penguin? Or does that rule only relate to websites? Any Guru's out there with an answer? Much appreciated. Si

How to best promote this content via social media to gain backlinks
I have created this content http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-music/the-worst-function-bands-and-wedding-bands-ever in order to promote it via social media. Ideally I want it to be shared across the web in order to gain backlinks. My question is how can I best do this? I know I can post it on twitter, facebook, google plus etc... but is that it? I'm new to social media and don't really understand how to use it to good effect. By posting it on social networking sites am I risking people copying the content and duplicate content penalties? Any help would be much appreciated!

Social Media Plugins advice - Google+ Pages - what is best for SEO?
I'm seeking some social media plugin advice, in relation to SEO. This may not be possible to answer yet, or ever? But it could be worth a discussion. As far as i can see, there are two main forms of plugins (taking facebook as an example): 1 that directly connects a user to your brand page on said platform (eg like us on facebook) 1 that allows a user to 'like', 'share', 'recommend' the page that you are on as a sign of respect and/or sharing content For a home page, I am confused as to which one to use, without filling out the whole page with plugins. One objective is to increase fan numbers, the other is to increase content sharing, and possibly SEO? I've noticed that Google has been returning some personalised results based on mine, or my google+ connections +1's. So to the question... Do you think having more fans on the new Google Pages for business accounts will improve SEO to the same, if not higher weighting than a +1 does? and therefore is it more important to get more brand page followers, or +1's of the homepage?

Google Places Pages and social icons
I have a business that works in many cities across Texas. Our home base is in Austin and i have a Google Places page set up for Austin. I have a page dedicated to each major city in Texas talking about clients we've worked with in each city, etc.. I am placing social icons on each page and Google Places is one of the Icons and i was concerned that if Google sees a link to our Austin places page on our Houston page that the Houston page might be considered less relevant for a Houston search being as Google takes note of addresses on pages to consider relevance. Will my page suffer in the serps if i link to our Austin local page on our other city pages in the google places icon? Second question: What are the best social icons to put on my web pages for the best traffic? Take care,
