I'm hiring a link building company - need help choosing
-
I asked this question before and got mixed feedback.
Companies vs. Freelancers.
Well I have a couple questions here. At a certain point it is definitely worth going in house, but what about the knowledge that we could gain from working with a big agency?
Does that really add any value? Can I hire a freelancer and trust him as much as a big agency?
or vice versa?
Can I hire an agency and trust them as much as a freelancer?
I have also been advised to make sure they offer competitive / site analysis as a first step, AND inform you of exactly how many links they plan to build per month, how much time they will dedicate to you and your account, expect turn around times, and light strategy details that they would likely use.
Thanks for any help!

Hey Tyler
I have to disagree with most of the responses here to some extent. Link building as in, here is $100 get me 10 PR4 links is over but link earning is far from over.
Content, content, content - we have all heard that but too many folks put stuff out there that gets no links and very few social shares so developing a strategy that helps you identify the kind of content that gets linked to along with the actual people who do the linking and building a content + outreach strategy can be very effective.
Think about this:
- Identify the kind of content in your industry that gets links
- make a list of all the people that link to it
- make a list of all possible influencers that can help promote your content to their network
- build a relationship with the influencers
- build content that is highly linkable and better than or unique to what was out there
- outreach to the people that linked to other content similar (but not as good of course)
- outreach to the influencers to share your content
- guest post on influential site(s) to get more eyes on your content (and win more links)
Basically, the age old buying of links is dead and buried (good riddance) but there are still some very cool strategies revolving around content generation and the effective marketing of that content to a wider audience of people who will link to it.
Following a long term approach like this you also look to build a broader network of contacts in the social networks and blogger buddies. Once you get to this point, where you share their content, they share yours etc then picking up links should be easy.
I have a client that put out a fairly cool but ultimately pedestrian piece of content last week and picked up over 30 links to it from the Blogosphere. All highly relevant sites with readership so there is a referral value as well but could you imagine trying to buy these 30 links? Lets say you went with some fairly low rate guest posting service at say $100 per post you are looking at $3000 - if you are doing this each week then $12000.
So, whilst there was some initial pain and investment in content and strategy the return on the investment downstream is beyond compare when looked at in a pay X for a link approach. It is also pretty much unbeatable and hard to duplicate by your competition so if you want to play hard and can settle in for a six month + program then you can get some real benefit from working with someone with some real link building smarts.
Hope that helps buddy.

Great content will get you links from your actual target market if it is done correctly. Save your money with the link building company and spend it building compelling content and then distributing it.

Traditional "link-building" is dead. Guest posting can still be very viable if done right.

The days of link building are over. The days of creating content that help the users find what they are looking for efficiently are here. If you give the user what they are looking for they are more likely to bookmark your site or link to it for reference.

... this is a very hard situation both a freelancer and an agency can be a bad idea...
The Problem is: If they are advertising link building they probably have multiple clients. And your links are being put in the same places as 10 other peoples that turns into instant link spam...
Best bet Hire someone who only works for your site give him some good content to work with than let him build links with that just for you. These will last longer and they are worth more...

Link Building
Hi Mozzers, I work for an IT company specialising in outsourcing Cisco Engineers worldwide. Due to being involved heavily in outsourcing, I'm finding it impossible to generate genuine and organic links to our website. My question is that is it essential to have back links back to our website to achieve high search engine rankings? I'm unable to get clients and other partners to provide links as we're the outsourced company, but I can get backlinks from unrelated c ompanies. For example we're running a CSR initiative with a National Gym relating to health & fitness, also links from our web designers etc... Do these links have any type of value? Any help and feedback would be greatly appreciated. Jason 🙂

Please help me find unnatural links
My URL is: http://bit.ly/hBJAG4 Just been hit with an unnatural imbound links penalty and don't know what to do. I haven't done any link building work for the last 3 years other then creating an infographic at Christmas that was incredibly popular: http://bit.ly/14lao4G I have 0 paid links and I have never spammed a blog or forum. The only thing I can think of is back in 2006/2007 I was directory crazy - I got listed in all of the (what I thought at the time) were good quality paid directories - could this have come back to haunt me? Why do you think I have just been penalized now when these directory links have been there for years? Should I start getting rid of the directory links? - they did cost me a lot of cash. Can any of you spot any other links that could be seen as unnatural? Thanks to anyone who can help in advance

Is it ok for a web design company to have a branded footer link on their client's sites?
Now I know that in general footer links to your site from another site are bad...this is because they are very often spammy...however I like to think that Google is pretty smart and I am of the opinion that a web design company should be able to link back to their own site. Here's why: If a visitor comes across a site that they love the design of, and they want a new website built...why shouldn't they be able to click through to the web designers site? (as long as the client is happy to link to it of course) I also feel that if there are a whole bunch of high authority/pagerank websites have been designed by a web design company and they therefore have a footer link pointing to them, it's probably a pretty good sign that they're a good web designer. Is it not? In saying this I think that the link anchor text should be branded rather than keywords. For example I usually write "Web Design by Static Shift" I'm interested to hear people's thoughts. Am I being blinded by my bias? Thoughts aside, and onto the facts...what are people's experiences with footer links for a web design company. Do they help or hinder?

'dilution' of link value.
Running ecommerce site selling childrens clothing for norwegian market. Most important keyword childrens clothing (barneklær) isnt too competitive (34 if i remember correct). The 2nd most important has very low competition (5 i think). I am starting a 3 month add with the best blog i found in norway. I am getting a 150x150 ad. In addition she is giving me a presentation in her blog tekst and allows me to arrange giveaway on my terms. She is allowing me to choose anchor text to use in presentation. Her stats to me seem very solid PA 58, DA 50 mozr 5,2 , mozt 4,6. http://www.joridkvam.com/ Should I in the upcoming months try to get in as many anchor texts links from her to different pages on my site. I have main words and producers etc that i am optimizing for on differnt sites. Or will the value of them just get diluted? so basically try to get in 2 links or 10 ? I am also curious as to which extent this one link will affect my ratings. I am ranking 24th for main term atm ( http://www.epleskrinet.no/ ) . Any one have any guesses ? thanks

Link Building PR versus topic
Regarding link building, what counts the most in terms of PR and relevance(topic). Is it whether, the link comes from a domain/page with high domain/page rank or that the link come from a domain with similar/relevant content? I know, we should always aim to get links from domains with both relevance and good page rank. But which is most important? For example: If we have a web site about swiss made watches. Should i focus on getting links from other domains with information about swiss made watches. Or can i achieve just as good link juice, by getting links from un-related web sites with high PR? We will of course get more qualified traffic from related domains. But from a pure search ranking, what plays the biggest factor?
