I accidentally blocked Google with Robots.txt. What next?
-
Last week I uploaded my site and forgot to remove the robots.txt file with this text:
User-agent: * Disallow: /
I dropped from page 11 on my main keywords to past page 50.
I caught it 2-3 days later and have now fixed it. I re-imported my site map with Webmaster Tools and I also did a Fetch as Google through Webmaster Tools. I tweeted out my URL to hopefully get Google to crawl it faster too.
Webmaster Tools no longer says that the site is experiencing outages, but when I look at my blocked URLs it still says 249 are blocked. That's actually gone up since I made the fix.
In the Google search results, it still no longer has my page title and the description still says "A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt – learn more."
How will this affect me long-term? When will I recover my rankings? Is there anything else I can do?
Thanks for your input!

Excellent. Good luck on your climb to page 1.

RESULTS: So Google re-crawled my site at some point since I fetched it through Webmaster Tools. My page in the search results now has my title and meta description back and I bounced back to page 15. Page 15 isn't too abnormal, as before I accidentally blocked myself I had been bouncing around from page 11 to 18.
Thanks for our input and hopefully this will help someone in the future.

Thanks for the input. Where do I fetch my URL within GWT? Any ideas on how quickly I'll regain my rankings? Will I have to make up some ground with my SEO work, or will Google just place me back where I was once they re-crawl my site?
-
I agree with Sebastian's follow up suggestions. It's way quicker to de-index yourself than it is to get those rankings back. Even one the robots is "cleared" it can take time to get back to where you were.

Hi,
Sorry to hear you're having issues, we've all accidently blocked off our site at one point or another I'm sure.
You've done pretty much everything you can do to get your site re-indexed. The only other thing I could suggest is to do a fetch URL within GWT, then take it a step further by submitting your URL and all linked pages.
If you haven't recovered within a week or so, then it may be an idea to do a reconsideration request.
Good luck!

Role of Robots.txt and Search Console parameters settings
Hi, wondering if anyone can point me to resources or explain the difference between these two. If a site has url parameters disallowed in Robots.txt is it redundant to edit settings in Search Console parameters to anything other than "Let Googlebot Decide"?

Google not pulling my favicon
Several sites use Google favicon to load favicons instead of loading it from the Website itself. Our favicon is not being pulled from our site correctly, instead it shows the default "world" image. https://plus.google.com/_/favicon?domain=www.example.com Is the address to pull a favicon. When I post on G+ or see other sites that use that service to pull favicons ours isn't displaying, despite it shows up in Chrome, Firefox, IE, etc and we have the correct meta in all pages of our site. Any idea why is this happening? Or how to "ping" Google to update that?

Removing robots.txt on WordPress site problem
Hi..am a little confused since I ticked the box in WordPress to allow search engines to now crawl my site (previously asked for them not to) but Google webmaster tools is telling me I still have robots.txt blocking them so am unable to submit the sitemap. Checked source code and the robots instruction has gone so a little lost. Any ideas please?

Invisible robots.txt?
So here's a weird one... Client comes to me for some simple changes, turns out there are some major issues with the site, one of which is that none of the correct content pages are showing up in Google, just ancillary (outdated) ones. Looks like an issue because even the main homepage isn't showing up with a "site:domain.com" So, I add to Webmaster Tools and, after an hour or so, I get the red bar of doom, "robots.txt is blocking important pages." I check it out in Webmasters and, sure enough, it's a "User agent: * Disallow /" ACK! But wait... there's no robots.txt to be found on the server. I can go to domain.com/robots.txt and see it but nothing via FTP. I upload a new one and, thankfully, that is now showing but I've never seen that before. Question is: can a robots.txt file be stored in a way that can't be seen? Thanks!

UK website ranking higher in Google.com than Google.co.uk
Hi, I have a UK website which was formerly ranked 1st in Google.co.uk and .com for my keyword phrase and has recently slipped to 6th in .co.uk but is higher in position 4 in Google.com. I have conducted a little research and can’t say for certain but I wonder if it is possible that too many of my backlinks are US based and therefore Google thinks my website is also US based. Checked Google WmT and we the geo-targeted to the UK. Our server is also UK based. Does anyone have an opinion on this? Thanks

Robots.txt file getting a 500 error - is this a problem?
Hello all! While doing some routine health checks on a few of our client sites, I spotted that a new client of ours - who's website was not designed built by us - is returning a 500 internal server error when I try to look at the robots.txt file. As we don't host / maintain their site, I would have to go through their head office to get this changed, which isn't a problem but I just wanted to check whether this error will actually be having a negative effect on their site / whether there's a benefit to getting this changed? Thanks in advance!

Should I set up a disallow in the robots.txt for catalog search results?
When the crawl diagnostics came back for my site its showing around 3,000 pages of duplicate content. Almost all of them are of the catalog search results page. I also did a site search on Google and they have most of the results pages in their index too. I think I should just disallow the bots in the /catalogsearch/ sub folder, but I'm not sure if this will have any negative effect?
