Affilate Programs on Subdomains
-
Hello SEO Community!
We are launching an affiliate program and for CMS flexibility the preferred, development solution, is putting the affiliate program on a subdomain.
Financial incentive affiliate programs "don't pass link value." Lets pretend they do for this situation
Here is the example:
company website= example.com
affilate website= affiliate.example.com
Proposed affilate program:
affilate.example.com/12345 -->301 redirects --> example.com
There are multiple business services so sometimes the 301 redirect looks like this:
affilate.example.com/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-foo
affilate.example.com/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-bar
note: The business services provided are very different. As a result, these links will be placed on very different types of website. To keep contextually relevant links in the 301 redirect should the affiliate look like this?:
affilate.example.com/busines-service-foo/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-foo
affilate.example.com/busines-service-bar/23457 -->301 redirects ---> example.com/busines-service-bar
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
If anyone can point me in the direction of an ideal way to set up affiliate programs that would be great.
Especially regarding:
canonical tag, # in url, 301
Any arguments about keeping the the affiliate off a subdomain are also very welcome.
Thanks!

I like the idea of sending affiliate links through a redirect on a subdomain because you can kill off all of those links at once by removing the redirects so they don't affect the final destination page should you need to clean up your link profile of page-rank-passing affiliate links. Whereas, if you had those links go straight to the destination page you'd have to ask the affiliates to remove each and every link, and/or use the disavow tool on them. I have heard of people sending those though a URL shortening service instead of a subdomain, which should work just as well since they are 301s.
I'm not sure how much sway keywords in the redirecting URL have, but it isn't a bad idea to keep them contextual as you described above. That just seems to make sense anyway.
Since the affiliate.subdomain URL is going to 301 redirect it won't have a canonical tag. You could put a self-referencing canonical tag on the final destination page if you wanted to.
The number in the URL is fine.
This seems like a good topic for discussion so I will leave it open for you.
PS: My answers assume you know the risks of passing pagerank through affiliate links and are willing to take them.

As far as I know, a 301 redirect passes pagerank to the final destination, therefore if you get too many bad links it will affect your main domain rankings.
I would suggest you to create javascript tags that your affiliates can use to display banners, and links to your site and adding the nofollow attribute to those links created by the js.
There's a Matt Cutts video where he explains how 301 redirects work:

Affiliate program links
Hello, I've question regarding affiliate partner generated links.Company www.example.com has a affiliate program. Partner www.example2.com links to the company site with affiliate link www.example.com/?affid=xxxx in banner, article etc. As I understand these type of links could hurt our Company site, so I asked partners to use rel="nofollow" in all links where they link to us usign ?affid=xxxx in url. To be 100% sure that I did the right thing I decided to post here my question. Could these type of links hurt our Company site? Regards,

Please recommend an affiliate program
I'm a bit surprised there doesn't seem to be a lot of info on their already on SEOMoz, so I'd appreciate any insight into this for a client of mine who is a currently a startup There are lots of options from massive brand names like Google and Amazon right down to countless services I've never heard before. For a smaller start-up with a technical edge. specifically service subscriptions for the webcam / video camera type of market, what would be an effective and cost friendly options to explore? Any shared experience is very appreciated. Here is a list that pretty well captures the top 10, so these are all under consideration: http://www.problogger.net/archives/category/affiliate-programs/ Cheers, Chris

Can anyone help me find the broadband ISP affiliate program I need?
I have a couple sites that deal with broadband internet access, and I'm looking to monetize beyond adsense. I'd like to sign up for some affiliate programs from internet service providers like Charter, CenturyLink, Comcast, etc. I found a couple affiliate programs but I am having no luck at all figuring out the programs that so many other websites are involved with. In about every case, the user is able to enter in their address and then a search is performed, returning programs available at their location. The programs I've found just do the traditional ad click-throughs for a possible commission. Can anyone enlighten me what kind of programs they are using?

Affilate Links
Hi I’m looking for confirmation of my worries about affiliate links to a website I'm working for and hopefully get some ideas of how to solve the problem of having affiliates without losing the strength of links from affiliate web sites. Poplidays.com has an affiliate program with an independant affiliation platform, but it also has a couple of partners who link directly to Poplidays.com from their sites. Poplidays wants to reward the partner sites in the same way as it does affiliates: with a percentage of sales generated by visitors. However as their SEO I don’t want to lose these links. They are from established, quality sites in the same subject area and, in my opinion, have a lot of SEO value. Affiliate links are 302 redirects from urls on the affiliation platform’s domain; something like http://poplidays.affiliation.com/?clientid=123 to www.poplidays.com Can you confirm that replacing a direct link to www.poplidays.com with a 302 redirect of this type will be a bad for Poplidays rankings? Any proof of this from a reliable source that I can quote? The affiliation platform is insisting that there is no negative effect and that no one has ever made a remark like mine before. Any good ideas of how to resolve the problem of rewarding linkers without spoiling the links for SEO? Bearing in mind that Poplidays want to be able to reward sites for visitors who may buy on a later interaction with the site (up to 30-days) and want an automatic report so that the partner can follow his commissions. I’ve tried implementing something through Google Analytics but it wasn’t perfect. Your in house affiliation system is working with links like http://go.seomoz.org/aff_c?offer_id=1&aff_id=1624&url_id=1&file_id=24 that 302 to http://www.seomoz.org/features?affid=1624&txnid=10274208218121120514 Is this a better / perfect solution ? Compared to a direct link to http://www.seomoz.org/features ? Thanks - Neil

How should I deal with the affiliate URLs we create through our affiliate program?
Our website offers an affiliate program and every affiliate gets a link http://www.ourwebsite.com/?affiliateID. Because we get many such links we use redirects to avoid duplicate content. Unfortunately we have 302 redirects set up and I want to make them 301. Many of our affiliates build backlinks using their http://www.ourwebsite.com/?affiliateID as the URL. If such links were redirected through a 301, would they pass any juice? Can our site get penalized by search engines for having backlinks to URLs that contain affiliate IDs, URLs that are 301 redirected to our homepage lets say?
