      Hello,

Let's say that there is a link to site A from site B. The domain authority of site B is 85, but the link is on a page that has a page authority of only 1. Does much authority get passed along from site B to site A? (Let's assume site A has a domain authority of 35, if that's relevant.)

      Thank you!

Unfortunately, Dr. Matt's out of town, so this answer won't be as thorough as I'd like, but the gist of it is that we factor in both DA and PA to some degree. If a site has very high DA but a very low PA (as in your example), we're going to bias somewhat toward the DA, as we believe Google sometimes does (a virtually unknown page on Wikipedia can rank very well, for example). Likewise, a high-PA page on a site with low DA may pass more through the PA, because (hopefully) that page has some legitimate authority.

It's a bit more complex, because DA and PA are related as well, so they do influence each other to some degree. On larger sites, the influence of any single page's PA is small, but the influence can be more obvious on smaller sites.

Putting aside our math, I think a link from a low-authority page on a high-authority site can be worthwhile. Look at directories, like DMOZ. I think it's important to make sure the low-PA page is indexed (some DMOZ pages aren't, because they're buried so deeply in the link structure), and I wouldn't get hung up on a link from a high-DA site. It's ultimately just one link. I wouldn't dismiss it as useless either, though. There's some amount of site/page balance in the mix and Google doesn't rely on only one type of authority.

I'm checking with Dr. Matt Peters, head of our Data Science team. It's less about secrecy and more that DA/PA are based on machine learning and have gotten a bit complex. Still, I suspect we can give you a general sense of how DA/PA pass through links. Posting this because I suspect an answer may take a day or two.

Well, it is a bit late for regular office hours for most Moz staff, so you may not hear an answer until tomorrow. The answer may also include "remember, what the search engines think is what matters", but you should get an answer with at least some information in the next couple of days.

and I am sure Moz will not answer this at all! 🙂

It is, but no one outside Moz can answer that, there are several metrics that affect authority passing, and I guess that most of those metrics and algos are property of Moz and most likely secret to prevent abuse.

How effective are 301 redirects in passing page rank?

                        301 redirect page rank

I have a blog which is ranking well for certain terms, and would like to repurpose it to better explain these terms it is ranking for, including updating the url to the new term the blog will be about. The plan being to 301 redirect the old url to new. In the past, I've done this with other pages, and have actually lost much of the rankings that I had earned on the original URL. What is your take on this? Maybe repurpose blog, but maintain original URL just to be on the safe side? Thanks

Trying to find all internal links to a specific page (without index)

Hi guys -- Still waiting on Moz to index a page of mine. We launched a new site over two months ago. In the meantime, I really just need a list of internal links to a specific page because I want to change its URL. Does anybody know how to find that list (of internal links to 1 of my pages) without the Moz index? I appreciate the help!

How can I stop a tracking link from being indexed while still passing link equity?

I have a marketing campaign landing page and it uses a tracking URL to track clicks. The tracking links look something like this: http://this-is-the-origin-url.com/clkn/http/destination-url.com/ The problem is that Google is indexing these links as pages in the SERPs. Of course when they get indexed and then clicked, they show a 400 error because the /clkn/ link doesn't represent an actual page with content on it. The tracking link is set up to instantly 301 redirect to http://destination-url.com. Right now my dev team has blocked these links from crawlers by adding   Disallow: /clkn/   in the robots.txt file, however, this blocks the flow of link equity to the destination page. How can I stop these links from being indexed without blocking the flow of link equity to the destination URL?

1000 Pages on old website. What to do with the 301 redirects for this domain?

Hi Moz Community, I have a 301 redirect question... I just acquired an old domain: Totally in my niche Domain is 14 years old Website exists of 1000 pages Great amount of backlinks Website is offline since about 2 weeks Will place a new website online asap with new url structure For the 50 best scoring pages I wrote a new, but fully comparable/related article. I will put a 301 redirect from those old to the new pages. My question: What to do with the 950 other url's? Should I put a 301 redirect to the homepage? Should I forward those pages to the 404 page? Should I divide the 950 url's with a 301 redirect to the 50 new ones? Another solution maybe? Any idea what would be the best solution so we can save as much Google juice as possible? Thanks in advance!

Is the Authority of Individual Pages Diluted When You Add New Pages?

I was wondering if the authority of individual pages is diluted when you add new pages (in Google's view). Suppose your site had 100 pages and you added 100 new pages (without getting any new links). Would the average authority of the original pages significantly decrease and result in a drop in search traffic to the original pages? Do you worry that adding more pages will hurt pages that were previously published?

Footer Links with same anchor text on all pages

We have different websites targeted at the different services our company provides. (e.g. For our document storage services, we have www.ukdocumentstorage.com. For document management, we have www.document-management-solutions.co.uk). If we take the storage site for example, every single page has a link in the footer to our document management site, with the anchor text 'Cleardata Document Management' SEOMoz is telling me that these are seen as external links (as they are on a different URL's), and I'm just clarifying that would this be a major possible factor in the website not ranking highly? How should I rectify this issue?

How much authority does a 301 pass to a different domain?

Hi, A client of mine is selling his business to a brand new company. The brand new company will be using a brand new domain (no way to avoid that unfortunately) and the current domain (which has tons of authority, links, shares, tweets, etc.) will not be used. Added to that, the new company will be taking over all the current content with just a few minor changes. (I know, I wish we could use the old domain but we can't.) Obviously, I am redirecting all pages on the current domain to the new domain via 301 redirects on a page by page basis. So, current.com/product-page-x.html redirects to new.com/product-page-x.html. My client and the new company both are asking me how much link juice (and other factors) are passed along to the new domain from the old domain. All I can find is "not the full value" or variants thereof. My experience with 301 redirects in the past has been within a single domain and I've seen some of those pages have decent authority and decent rankings as a result of the 301 (no other optimization work was done or links were added). Are there any studies out there that I'm missing that show how much authority/juice gets passed and/or lost via a 301 redirect? Anybody with a similar issue see any trends in page/domain authority and/or rankings? Thanks for any insights and opinions you have.
