Sudden drop after 301 redirection
-
Hi Experts
We did a 301 redirect from an old site to a new site to get rid of any bad link juice. We recently found a big drop in rankings and traffic after google last indexed the new web pages.
We did 301 using asp at page level coding. The website had 4000 approx. pages and we did 301 section by section. This is how we did as per one of the blog post in seomoz.
- Create a sitemap for your old domain.
- Create content (contact information, description of your company, indication of future plans) and something link worthy for the new domain. (You should start trying to build links early)
- Setup the new domain and make it live.
- Register and verify your old domain and new domain with Google Webmaster Tools.
- Create a custom 404 page for old domain which suggests visiting new domain.
- Old Domain error checking and fixing
- In a development environment, test the redirects from the old domain to the new domain. Ideally, this will be a 1:1 redirect. (www.example-old-site.com/category/sexy-mustaches.html to www.example-new-site.com/category/sexy-mustaches.html)
- 301 redirect your old domain to your new domain.
- Submit your old sitemap to Google and Bing. The submission pages are within Google Webmaster Tools and Bing Webmaster Center (This step will make the engines crawl your old URLs, see that they are 301 redirects and change their index accordingly.)
- Fill out the Change of Address form in Google Webmaster Tools.
- Create a new sitemap and submit it to the engines. (This will tell them about any new URLs that were not present on the old domain)
- Wait until Google Webmaster Tools updates and fix any errors it is indicated in the Diagnostics section.
- Monitor search engine results to make sure new domain is being properly indexed.
We also did a press release with prweb to announce the new launch. We followed the steps recommended in one of the
I am not sure what to do next. Can anyone suggest if its normal to see a drop and we should wait for some time or if we did something wrong?
We are loosing business with every single day. Please help !

Experts, Thank you for the response.
We have done page to page redirection using asp code. Please find a screenshot attached of a page from the old site. There is no 404 page displayed in the old site as it simply redirects from the old site to the new site. For example, if a user goes to www.oldsite.com/abc.html it redirects to www.newsite.com/abc.html.
Before setting up 301 redirection, Back links from Web 2.0 and other good article directories had been built for the new domain. We started the 301 redirection in September and completed section by section. Rankings for the new domain came up in google and stayed until we filled up the "Change of Address" form on 20th Nov after redirecting the homepage. Please find the screenshot of the analytics attached.
On Nov 28th, many of our keywords disappeared from the rankings and we saw a big drop in traffic. Rankings are not even in 100 at the moment.
1. Will it be appropriate to wait for a week or two to see if google re-indexes the new website.
2. Shall i roll back the entire process and withdraw my request for change of address. Shall i remove 301 from the old site.
3. Have i set it up correctly
Thanks for all your help. I appreciate.

To your point about a new domain - new domains aren't given as much validity as old ones, which can mean you have to do some rebuilding and re-earn rankings. If the goal was to get rid of old, bad link juice, what have you done to drive new links to your new domain (and PRWeb does not count in any way - it's a scam, IMHO)? That's another factor that could impact a positive improvement.
At the same time, I may not have read as closely as I could have, but how could you do 1:1 redirects from the old site to the new and yet offered up a 404 page to direct people from the old domain to the new? Was there a specific reason why you didn't want to 301 from the old main domain URL to the new one?
Yes, it's normal to see a drop and this all takes time to recoup. It's the trade off you made when you opted to start from scratch, unfortunately. The other thing is, there could be issues going on with the site that aren't related to spammy links - I don't know enough about your site to speak to specifics, but it's another possibility that something else could be wonky.

I've redirected tons of sites and sometimes there is a temporary decline in rankings/traffic as a result of the search engines having to crawl the old site, follow the 301s and replace the old rankings with the new pages. But usually the decline isn't too drastic and only lasts for a week or two, if that. It may be different with a site with thousands of pages though. How long has it been since you added the 301 redirects? If you'd like, feel free to PM me your URLs and I can take a look.

Drop in featured snippets and sessions following algorithm update
Seemingly following the Feb 2021 algorithm update (passage indexing) our site has seen a massive drop in featured snippets (from 39 on 8th Feb to 27 on 15th Feb) and hasn't recovered (still 27 on 18th March). Our site has also seen a steady drop off in sessions in the UK over the past couple of weeks, despite continued increases in the US. This could potentially be due to the loss of featured snippets meaning less traffic to our top pages, but we're wondering if this could also be another change, separate to featured snippets? Does anyone know if these changes are likely to be linked to the passage indexing algorithm update (or another unconfirmed update) or simply a coincidence and either way, what we can start doing to see our number of featured snippets (and then hopefully sessions) start to increase again? EDIT: As of 22th March, these have dropped again to just 10 featured snippets - a total of 290% decrease - any help would we appreciated! TIA 🙂

What happens when a de-indexed subdomain is redirected to another de-indexed subdomain? What happens to the link juice?
Hi all, We are planning to de-index and redirect a sub domain A to sub domain B. Consequently we now need to d-index sub domain B also. What happens now to the link juice or page rank they gained from hundreds and thousands of backlinks? Will there be any ranking impact on main domain? Backlinks of these sub domains are not much relevant to main domain content. Thanks

Duplicate website pages indexed: Ranking dropped. Does Google checks the duplicate domain association?
Hi all, Our duplicate website which is used for testing new optimisations got indexed and we dropped in rankings. But I am not sure whether this is exact reason as it happened earlier too where I don't find much drop in rankings. Also I got replies in the past that it'll not really impact original website but duplicate website. I think this rule applies to the third party websites. But if our own domain has exact duplicate content; will Google knows that we own the website from any other way we are associated like IP addresses and servers, etc..to find the duplicate website is hosted by us? I wonder how Google treats duplicate content from third party domains and own domains. Thanks

301 redirect to URL plus anchor tag???
Hi - my company has just had a site redesign completed, and our "old" site we have landing pages for a full product line. The new design has taken the content from those landing pages and placed them into one long scrolling page. We currently rank well on the "old" landing pages but now all that content is contained in a single page with anchor tags throughout attached to the headings. Can you set up 301's to anchor tags? Example: old site www.mysite.com/products/automotive/auto-parts.html new site: www.mysite.com/products/automotive#auto-parts

Redirecting Blog WITHOUT .htaccess
Hello Mozzers! I currently have a WordPress blog on a subdomain that I'd like to redirect to a subdirectory. Unfortunately, the CMS that I am on will not allow me implement a rewrite rule because we do not have access to the server (It's on Shopify, which is a fully hosted solution). If we set up a 301 from blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog, will all my link juice be preserved? Or is it better just to keep it on the subdomain for now? I'd like to avoid importing all my content into Shopify's native blog, if I can, just because we may be moving to another CMS shortly. Thank you in advance! -Alima Team

Urgent input needed on huge drop in Google
As of today we got huge drops in SERP across all our pages. We can see a drop between 10 to 80% on most of our pages on this domain: http://www.meresverige.dk Some background info: Never bought any links Yes, did optimize the site, but only in fair way, using SEO moz On-Page Optimization. Most pages get an A-grade No cloaking, all pages do look exactly same to visitors and Google Any input on what this could be? We are hugely grateful for any input that might lead us in the correct direction Have a nice day Fredrik

Dramatic Rankings Drop
We've been slowly working up the rankings for some targeted keywords, and though it's been slow we have recently moved up to pages 1,2 and 3 for some of these kwyrods. Friday I got the rankings report from SEOMOZ and we have completely dropped from all rankings. Everything is gone. We've dropped at many at 40+ positions almost overnight. I haven't gone into deep research as to why this happened yet, and I have not asked the client if he did anything off-site to hinder our rankings, but I know that I have changed nothing in terms of SEO techniques in the past week...and these techniques have been working and moving us up so I'm at a loss as to why all of a sudden we've lost everything. If anyone has dealt with this issue before or can take a look at this site I'd appreciate it: http://www.EraseDisease.com Thanks
