Duplicate content and 404 errors
-
I apologize in advance, but I am an SEO novice and my understanding of code is very limited. Moz has issued a lot (several hundred) of duplicate content and 404 error flags on the ecommerce site my company takes care of.
For the duplicate content, some of the pages it says are duplicates don't even seem similar to me. additionally, a lot of them are static pages we embed images of size charts that we use as popups on item pages. it says these issues are high priority but how bad is this? Is this just an issue because if a page has similar content the engine spider won't know which one to index?
also, what is the best way to handle these urls bringing back 404 errors? I should probably have a developer look at these issues but I wanted to ask the extremely knowledgeable Moz community before I do

Ali,
If you are on WordPress you can try some of these. First, set up the free Yoast SEO plugin if you have not already.
I have been working on this exact issue. The way Tags are set up (on the client site) we are getting duplicate pages. I am trying a couple of things:
-
In Yoast XML Sitemaps > Taxonomies you can set "Tags" to "Not in Sitemap". Removing them from the XML Sitemap will at least lessen the frequency that Google accesses Taged pages.
-
In Yoast Titles & Meta > Taxonomies you can select Index or Noindex for your Tags.
Following the Tag idea, you might get a 404 if a Tag is changed or deleted. It's hard to diagnose 404s without seeing them. Consider a custom 404 error page, if you have not already. That will at least improve the user experience. With htaccess you set different redirects and custome 404 pages depending on the site section.
Tags in WP don't seem to add much benefit, and probably cause more problems (like dupe content). Even if you are diligent with Tag consisitency, most blogs end up with nearly duplicate Tags.
There are many Moz posts on the topic of duplicate content in WP specific to Tags that might further illuminate your question.
Did you change anything universally, like switch to https? Missed redirects can cause a 404.
The WP Broken Links in Tools will direct you straight to the 404 pages.
Here are some more tips for dealing with 404 in WP:

Hope this helps!

Hi Ali,
Are you on WordPress?

Hi Ali,
Please check the title of your pages, if they are same then those links would be counted as duplicates. Also, check how many duplicates are being reported in google webmaster, these are also good indicators for duplicate pages.
This link should help as well
http://moz.com/learn/seo/duplicate-content
& this is a link to a 301 redirect generator
http://www.htaccessredirect.com
Remember to also use a
Rel=Canonical put this tag in the correct page you want to show people. Then do a 301 redirect on the pages that are duplicates and point them on ONLY right one
As for 404, they will need to be reviewed and handled with 301 to map them to actual URL.
I hope this helps, please feel free to respond if you have further questions.
Regards,
Vijay

Canonical Tags for Legacy Duplicate Content
I've got a lot of duplicate pages, especially products, and some are new but most have been like this for a long time; up to several years. Does it makes sense to use a canonical tag pointing to one master page for each product. Each page is slightly different with a different feature and includes maybe a sentence or two that is unique but everything else is the same.

Finding a specific link - Duplicating my own content
Hi Mozzers, This may be a bit of a n00b question and i feel i should know the answer but alas, here i am asking. I have a page www.website.co.uk/page/ and im getting a duplicate page report of www.website.co.uk/Page/ i know this is because somewhere on my website a link will exists using the capitalised version. I have tried everything i can think of to find it but with no luck, any little tricks? I could always rewrite the urls to lowercase, but I have downloadable software etc also on the website that i dont want to take the capitals out of. So the best solution seems to be finding the link and remove it. Most link checkers I use treat the capitalised and non capitalised as the same thing so really arent helping lol.

404 errors is webmaster - should I 301 all pages?
Currently working on a retail site that shows over 1200 404 errors coming from urls that are from products that were on the site, but have now been removed as they are seasonal/out of stock. What is the best way of dealing with this situation ongoing? I am aware of the fact that these 404s are being marked as url errors in Google Webmaster. Should I redirect these 404s to a more appropriate live page or should I leave them as they are and not redirect them? I am concerned that Google may give the site a penalty as these 404s are growing (as the site is a online retail store and has products removed from its page results regularly). I thought Google was able to recognise 404s and after a set period of time would push them out of the error report. Also is there a tool out there that on mass I can run all the 404s urls through to see their individual page strength and the number of links that point at each one? Thanks.

Category URL Duplicate Content
I've recently been hired as the web developer for a company with an existing web site. Their web architecture includes category names in product urls, and of course we have many products in multiple categories thus generating duplicate content. According to the SEOMoz Site Crawl, we have roughly 1600 pages of duplicate content, I expect primarily from this issue. This is out of roughly 3600 pages crawled. My questions are: 1. Fixing this for the long term will obviously mean restructuring the URLs for the site. Is this worthwhile and what will the ramifications be of performing such a move? 2. How can I determine the level and extent of the effects of this duplicated content? 3. Is it possible the best course of action is to do nothing? The site has many, many other issues, and I'm not sure how highly to prioritize this problem. In addition, the IT man is highly doubtful this is causing an SEO issue, and I'm going to need to be able to back up any action I request. I do feel I will need to strongly justify any possible risks this level of site change could cause. Thanks in advance, and please let me know if any more information is needed.

Google Duplicate Content Penalty On My Own Site?
I am certain that I have hit a google penalty filter for my site http://www.playpokeronline.ca for my main keywords "play poker online" in google.ca I rank 670th and used to be on the first page between 1 and 10 in June. On Bing I am like 9th On my site I found the entire site duplicated as follows Original: www.playpokeronline.ca Duplicate www.playpokeronline.ca/playpokeronline/ this duplicate was not intentional and seems to be a result of my hosting at godaddy. for every page on my site and it shows up in webmaster tools I blocked the duplicate with robots.txt and a few days ago dropped it and wrote a rel=connonical tag in the top of each page visitors dropped from 100 per day in august to 12-20 in the last month. Google says that if duplicate content is made to try to game serps they may filter or penalize my site. Have I triggered this penalty or a different sort of over optimization penalty? Will the rel= canonical tags fix this or should i do something else? This Penalty Business is Not my Idea of a good time Thank You Jeb

Help removing duplicate content from the index?
Last week, after a significant drop in traffic, I noticed a subdomain in the index with duplicate content. The main site and subdomain can be found below. http://mobile17.com http://232315.mobile17.com/ I've 301'd everything on the subdomain to the appropriate location on the main site. Problem is, site: searches show me that if the subdomain content is being deindexed, it's happening really slowly. Traffic is still down about 50% in the last week or so... what's the best way to tackle this issue moving forward?
