Has anyone any experience of Google pulling through random meta descriptions.
-
If you search "venn digital" then the correct meta description is pulled through, but if you search "venndigital" then it pulls through our twitter feed from the bottom of the page.
My only suggestion is that it is doing it because there is no mention of " Venn Digital" in the body of the copy, so it is going to the twitter feed at the bottom of the page where Venn Digital is mentioned to pull this info through.

I have the same problem, sometimes i optimize the metadescription to increase my CTR but google doesn´t want to show it.. grr

Yep, seems Google treats the meta description tag as mere suggestion then anything else.
Very normal.

Hi Andrew. Yes, Google has been known to pull other text for its results instead of what is in the meta description. Same goes for title tags as well. Like you've inferred, what they're trying to do is match their search result with the most applicable portion of text from what they deem the most relevant page.
Edit. See: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35624 for Google's larger explanation of this process. Cheers!

How to rank in Google against a business with the same name?
My client has a coworking space in London, but shares its name with a recruitment company also in London. When searching for my client's brand name, they don't appear anywhere on the first page as this recruitment company dominates. How can I rank prominently for my brand term if there is someone else in these top spots who isn't a direct competitor (in the typical sense)? Thank you!

Anyone Seen Google Search Suggestions Like this?
I was putting a URL into a Google Spreadsheet and wanted to link to the url. The domain is a .legal domain and when I put it in I got instant search suggestions for a VF-Law.com (different firm in different state) but nothing showed for the .legal domain. I believe the site has only been up a few months but it is indexed in Google. I wondered if there is an issue with these newer domain extensions and Instant Search? Thoughts? I have attached an image here. 1BnYthO

Is using emoji's in meta descriptions a good or bad idea ? - I haven't seen it used much hence my query
Hello Mozzers, We need to redo some of our meta descriptions as our CTR's are not to good. I've noticed one of my competitors using emoji's which I personally think looks pretty good. They are using the Phone icon and ticks - as calls to action etc However, I can't see hardly anyone else using them on general serps ...so I am wondering , is it a bad idea ? thanks Pete

The Infernal Google Hotel Finder
Good Morning Mozzers, I currently have a client who is trying to place ads on Google Hotel Finder. I've recently conducted a great deal of research on this topic, but I'm still struggling to find anything definitive in terms of creating ads for the property I represent. Likewise, I've noticed that my client's property is ranking very poorly for a number of keyword terms when you click "more places" on the search results page. In short, I need to achieve two items (AND FAST...): being able to create ads for the property on Google Hotel Finder, and figuring out how to get the property to rank more highly in the "more places" section of the search results page. Quite frankly, we are willing to do any and all things necessary at this point to expedite the process. Any and all insight/recommendations would be great! Thank you all so much for reading, I look forward to hearing your comments!

We know about Panda... Penguin... Hummingbird... but I heard another major update is going to happen. Where do you find out the google updates ahead of time? Maybe a stupid question.

How do you get on Google Define?
I've noticed that when searching "define: _________ " there are times when Google will bring up a definition from a website. An example of this is when I searched "define: meta tag". Google brings up the definition given by searchenginewatch.com. When searching "define: meta description" Google returns a definition from hubspot.com. I also searched "define: seo" and Google returned a result from Wikipedia. So here's my questions: 1. How do I create a definition that appears in the SERPs? (is there code I should use for this? Does anybody know exactly how to do this?) 2. if I get a definition up, would the location effect the returned results? e.g. I put up a definition for "gobbledygook" on dansnasvhillebarbershop.com (of course located in Nashville). When Nashville locals search for the definition of "gobbledygook" will it pull the definition from dansnashvillebarbershop.com? 3. Do you have any places where I can read more about how it works and strategies to get definitions to come up in google? Thanks!

Google+ for Business Links Section - Not Available
I haven't found any documentation on this - curious if anyone's noticed that Google+ Local Listings (i.e. brick-n-mortar shops) don't have access to a Links section like a "brand" page might? Seems strange not to let them link out to their social media assets while Coke and Ford have that privilege. I wonder why? Thanks!

Have you heard of any white hat methods for influencing Google's auto suggest/auto complete?
We have a client who has a "friend" who says he can get keyword phrases that include their business name to show up in Google's auto suggest when doing a search. We have not heard much about this and are skeptical to these claims as we know how Google comes up with these suggested keyword phrases. Wondering if anyone in the community heard much about tactics to influence auto suggest/auto complete and would like to know your opinion about it.
