Targeting Different Countries... One Site or Separate?
-
I have a client who has 3 ecommerce sites. They are somewhat differentiated but for the most part sell the same stuff. Luckily 2 of them are quite authoritative, old and rank reasonably well.
Most of the visitors and sales come from the US. He wants to start targeting Europe, Mexico and Canada.
What are your suggestions for doing this? Are we better targeting on the main domains? Not really sure how to do that?
Should we use a subdomain and a new store front for each geo?
Should we use a .co.uk .co.mx and .co.ca each with a unique storefront?
It looks like we are moving to a Magento platform so setting up multiple storefronts on a single database is not a big issue.
Anyone have any experience with this?
-
Most assuredly use different CC-TLDs! I would also point to each from each as you have seen on many global sites. This will allow you to use different keywords also as Europe and the US have different spellings for the same words. So make sure your shopping cart software allows this if you are using the same across all domains.
This will help in link building also as it would be harder to get a spanish website linking to an english website even with sub domains.
-
I like that a lot! Can you rewrite product descriptions without maintaining separate databases? Would that involve a custom field or something?
-
Roger, The way we have approached this in the past was to go with separate TLD's using Magento. The main thing we did was to focus on a complete content rewrite for all pages including product descriptions to remove any possibility of duplicate content issues holding back the new sites and then set about localising with directories, webmaster tools and some low level link building. This seemed to do the trick in getting our .co.uk and .ie domains to rank above the older .com original site.

Hosting on a US server is not as much of a problem as it used to be because the search engines have worked this one out.
Where it appears you may have a problem is that the site is already established in the US which will make it more difficult to establish a UK site unless you go for the uk tld.
If you want to make sure UK visitors to the .com are sent to the right site, then a lightbox generated using JavaScript for non-US IP users would do the trick e.g. www.travelzoo.com
Once the user has selected UK then a cookie is dropped and they will always be sent to the UK site.
Make sure your country select page includes a no index, follow tag so that it doesn't get indexed, but does pass any link juice it happens to acquire.
-
It depends a bit on the client. While it's true that a new .ca domain will do better in Canada than a new .com domain, a brand new .ca may not do as well as your established .com which already has some authority. What we've often done was to setup a structure of www.clientsite.com/ca for the regional site. You can register www.clientsite.ca and 301 redirect it to to the subfolder.
If you do that, you can handle it in WT by creating multiple entries for the site, not declaring a region for the main domain but creating separate regions for each subfolder.
-
I kinda figured that was the case.
I know it is going to be more complicated then setting the market in WMT. Any specific advise around geo targeting for e-commerce?
Is hosting on a US server a problem if we were going to launch a site in the UK?
-
If you are going for other markets with the same language e.g. UK (English) then I would go with a separate local TLD because a .com with a /uk will struggle to establish itself in a new market like the UK.
Believe me when I say that it is not as simple as indicating in webmaster tools which markets you wish to target, especially if you already have an established site in the US on a .com
Go separate. Go local tld.

Help with international targeting
Hi all! Okay, so we've got a site, let's say example.com - we sell training courses worldwide with a particular focus in just 8 countries.
International SEO | | JamieM1611
Historically, we've never targeted users in different countries effectively, we've just got the example.com that floats about ranking in different countries, but our content is dynamic (obviously a big SEO no-no - we pick up the IP of the user and show the content relevant for that country without the URL's changing)
This obviously presents an SEO flaw in that we can effectively target people in our key countries effectively. So, we're introducing the targeting as subfolders (/uk/, /ie/ etc) my questions are: 1. Would this be the correct implementation of hreflang AND canonical tags for the URL: https://www.example.com/es/ 2. The second thing I was wondering is the 'international targeting' in search console. We haven't (because of our current set up) set a target country for www.example.com (because of the lack of regional targeting and dynamic catch all) - would we be better leaving that untargeted and only specifying the regional targets for the new subfolder URLs (www.example.com/us/ /uk/ etc) or should we set the .com as the USA as default? We'd be a bit weary of doing this because most of our traffic comes from the UK and South Africa, so I'm assuming it would be best to leave this alone unless someone else has a different opinion? I know Googlebot almost always crawls .coms from US, which is why we were thinking of leaving the .com as the 'catch all' and specifying the US version. 3. Finally, we do have a lot pages which don't really change at all (like the about us page) would we give these any special directives to avoid duplicate content (as the content on these won't be changing at all?) or do we just keep the structure as shown above? I.E would the about us page (even though not changing) still be (with the canonical): URL: https://www.example.com/about-us/ (x-default) ? Thanks in advance!0 -
International targeting
I'm offering an international service to any country from any destination, The website main language is English and i have 4 other languages as subdirectories, https://beassistance.com https://beassistance.com/de/ https://beassistance.com/es/ https://beassistance.com/fr/ https://beassistance.com/ru/ I'm looking to target by language not country, Should i choose "unlisted" for all the subdirectories? my second question regards the meta tags , my current meta tag rel="alternate" hreflang="ru-ru" href="https://beassistance.com/ru/" /> And i'm thinking about using rel="alternate" hreflang="ru" href="https://beassistance.com/ru/" /> Is that best practice to target by the language? Update I already have Hreflang Sitemap <urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9" <br="">xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

How to handle different content on same domain internationally?
Dear community, I have encountered a unique situation and I am unsure as how to proceed, I have a U.S. based website for intentions of this question is www.musicstore.com. The customer has decided to offer their products up for sale internationally, however, has two business requirements, one is that his international presence differs with product offering and content then the domestic version and two, that they both live on the same domain of www.musicstore.com without any reference to offering a differing international presence. Many of his products are offered for purchase directly overseas, while not against his suppliers rules, it is frowned upon. All this said, now to my question. I'm currently running a Magento two website install. With GeoIP setting which version of www.musicstore.com is presented. Do I have to worry about different content being displayed on the same exact url even though the experience is completely location based? If it is a concern, any risks I should be concerned with. I could possibly do something along the lines of www.musicstore.com/in/ while this is not ideal for the customer, if it prevents many larger issues I'd steer the customer this way. I just want my customer to be able to sell his product internationally without upsetting his suppliers or making Google go, what does this site actually have. Hopefully I explained my question well enough for those who can help to understand. Please ask if you need any more information. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

E-Commerce site in 2 languages - Duplicate content or not?
How does Google view this? Our current site works like:
International SEO | | bjs2010
www.domain.com/EN - English
www.domain.com/ES - Spanish All products are the same, just different language and different URL for them - is this good or bad? I thought of either Going with .co.uk or .com for "English" and a .es for "Spanish"
OR Subdomaining it. www.es.domain.com and www.en.domain.com Any advice appreciated!0 -
Using Javascript to alter ONE or TWO keywords in International Site
Hi, What is the best way to target a language that has slight variations in it without actually targetting specific countries? Scenario: Ecommerce site that sells mobile phones in Spanish, initially created to target Spanish from Spain. We call a mobile phone a "movil" Now we want to target LatinAmerican users, which also use Spanish with variations, the most notable being mobile phone called "celular". We don't want to create specific sites via new ccTLDs, nor subdomains, no directories for each new country, and we want to avoid having two sites - one for spain, one for latinamerica- given that the only major difference is we say MOVIL in spain and CELULAR in LatinAmerica. What is Googles take if we simply decide to modify THAT specific keyword in each page where it is mentioned? Either by: a) Server based. IP Detect. that is, render the page with either one or the other term b) Javascript based. i.e. Have BOTH terms on all pages but using Javascript show/hide according to user preferences. c) Display the keywords with different font sizes/emphasis, depending on the visitor. Any ideas?

What is the best way to make country specific IP redirect for only product pricng pages?
My website has 3 services and its price will be different for US/EU/Developed world and Asian/African countries.Apart from pricing page, all other things remain same. I want to use IP based redirect .I heard this thing is called cloaking and used by black-hat guys. What kind of instructions should I give to my web developer to look best to Google/Search bots and correctly show visitors the intended prices. Is there any caution to be taken care of.
