Optimize a Classifieds Site
-
Hi,
I have a classifieds website and would like to optimize it. The issues/questions I have:
-
A Classifieds site has, say, 500 cities. Is it better to create separate subdomains for each city (http://city_name.site.com) or subdirectory (http://site.com/city_name)?
-
Now in each city, there will be say 50 categories. Now these 50 categories are common across all the cities. Hence, the layout and content will be the same with difference of latest ads from each city and name of the city and the urls pointing to each category in the relevant city.
The site architecture of a classifieds site is highly prone to have major content which is not really a duplicate content. What is the best way to deal with this situation?
I have been hit by Panda in April 2011 with traffic going down 50%. However, the traffic since then has been around same level. How to best handle the duplicate content penalty in case with site like a classifieds site.
Cheers!

Thanks Dr. Peter :). I have implemented your suggestions, so will see if I get any better rankings. Meanwhile, I will continue link building effort for the site!

They shouldn't - a META NOINDEX is easier to undo than a Robots.txt block, 301, or canonical tag, in my experience. The biggest risk is just a delay - it may take Google a little time to re-index the content once you remove the tag.
What I wouldn't do is add/remove the tag rapidly. For example, if you had a product that went out of stock every other day, I'd leave it alone - Google wouldn't respond quickly enough to all those changes. So, once a category has enough results, I'd lift the NOINDEX permanently. It's really just a move to consolidate while you build up the site - both in terms of content and your link profile.
-
I really want to clear out thin content and your response makes it much clear to me. Now I know want to do next. Thank you so much for replying and clarifying the details.
I have another question.. Let's consider this scenario where I add META NOINDEX to the category pages that have less than 5 classified ads. Later down the road there are more than 5 ads posted in that category and I would like to put META INDEX... will google treat this page differently meaning with some penalty of NOINDEX in first place and then INDEX later on or not index these categories as they were NOINDEX earlier?

Unfortunately, the painful reality, especially if you've been hit by Panda, is that you probably can't support that scale or that it looks thin to Google. 500 cities X 50 categories = 25,000 "category" pages, so to speak, all of which are basically just search results. For most sites, it's just too much.
I'd definitely keep the cities as sub-folders. If you go the sub-domain route, you could fracture your internal link-juice even more. It depends a bit on the authority and marketing budget of the site. If each city is a separate property with its own sales force, budget, etc., there may be a logic to sub-domains. Unless you're Groupon or someone like that, though, it's probably a bad idea.
You may have to prune down the indexed content, to be frank. I'd look for other Panda factors, too, like aggressive ad density (too many ads to too little content) or very thin pages. If you have tons of cities or categories with no listings, META NOINDEX them. You could even do it dynamically - only let Google index a page if it has 1+ listings, for example.
I'd also take a look at other low-value content, like paginated search. If each city has 100s of pages and you're indexing page 2, page 3, etc., consider consolidating them. It's a tricky topic, but Adam Audette has a great write-up here:
http://searchengineland.com/five-step-strategy-for-solving-seo-pagination-problems-95494
These pages can look very low-value to Google. Add in search sorts and other variants, and your 25K categories could be exploding into hundreds of thousands of pages, before Google even gets to the listings themselves. The ads are the real meat of the site, and that's where you want Google to focus.

Site migration/ CMS/domain site structure change-no access to search console
Hi everyone, We are migrating an old site under a bigger umbrella (our main domain). As mentioned in the title, We'll perform CMS migration, domain change, and site structure change. Now, the major problem is that we can't get into google search console for the old site. The site still has old GA code, so google search console verification using this method is not possible, also there is no way developers will be able to add GTM or edit DNS setting (not to bother you with the reason why). Now, my dilemma is : 1. Do we need access to old search console to notify Google about the domain name change or this could be done from our main site (old site will become a part of) search console 2. We are setting up 301 redirects from old to the new domain (not perfect 1:1 redirect ). Once migration is done does anything else needs to be done with the old domain (it will become obsolete)? 3.The main site, Site-map... Should I create a new sitemap with newly added pages or update the current one. 4. if you have anything else please add:) Thank you!

Meta refresh for news site?
We have a news site that uses a meta refresh (<meta < span="">http-equiv="refresh" content="600" /> across all content. I understand the reasoning on the homepage and am trying to decide of the cons of using this (slows page, is it treated differently and loses pagerank/link ..) Does anyone have experience with meta refresh being a negative thing or does it no longer matter?</meta <>

Google penalized site--307/302 redirect to new site-- Via intermediate link—New Site Ranking Gone..?
Hi, I have a site that google had placed a manual link penalty on, let’s call this our
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Robdob2013
company site. We tried and tried to get the penalty removed, and finally gave up and purchased another name. It was our understanding that we could safely use either a 302 or 307 temporary redirect in order to redirect people from our old domain to our new one.. We put this into place several months and everything seemed to be going along well. Several days ago I noticed that our root domain name had dropped for our selected keyword from position 9 to position 65. Upon looking into our GWT under “Links to Your site” , I have found many, many, many links which were pointed to our old google penalized domain name to our new root domain name each of this links had a sub heading “Via this intermediate link -> Our Old Domain Google Penalized Domain Name” In light of all of this going on, I have removed the 307/302 redirect, have brought the
old penalized site back which now consists of a basic “we’ve moved page” which is linked to our new site using a rel=’nofollow’ I am hoping that -1- Our new domain has probably not received a manual penalty and is most likely now
received some sort of algorithmic penalty, and that as these “intermediate links” will soon disappear because I’m no longer doing the 302/307 from the old sight to the new. Do you think this is the case now or that I now have a new manual penalty place on the new
domain name.. I would very much appreciate any comments and/or suggestions as to what I should or can do to get this fixed. I need to still keep the old domain name as this address has already been printed on business cards many, many years ago.. Also on a side note some of the sub pages of the new root domain are still ranking very
well, it’s only the root domain that is now racking awfully.. Thanks,0 -
Ranking a site in the USA
I'm UK based and looking at setting up a site to rank in the USA. As I understand it a .com TLD is best but these are used worldwide so do I simply need to set the geotargeting to USA in webmaster tools? Or is there a better domain to use? With hosting the site in US and on page content related to US cities (I plan to create a page for each US city I operate in the the city name in the H1 tag) will that be enough for google to understand that the page should rank in the US version of google. Also how can I view Google USA search results - when I go to google.com it automatically redirects to google.co.uk and I can only change the location on the left hand side to UK cities. Any help much appreciated!

Does Google punish sites for Backlinks?
Here is Matt Cutts video, for those of you who have not seen it already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4dAWb5jUws (Very Short) In this Video Matt explains that Google does not look at backlinks. Many link spamming sites have detected, there have been many website receiving warning messages in their Google web tools to deindex these links, etc.. My theory is that Google will not punish sites for backlinks. However, they manually check for "link farming sites" and warn anyone affiliated with them, just in case these links were built from a competitor. This way they can eliminate all the "Bad Link Farm" sites and not hurt anyone who does not deserve to be hurt. Google is not going to give us all their information to rank, they dont want us to rank. They want us to PPC. However, they do want to have the best SERPs available. I call it Google juggling! Thoughts?
