Half of my backlinks just disappeared!
-
I was just starting to feel like I was getting traction and all of a sudden half of our external backlinks just disappeared! Over the past 4 months we've taken our total external links from about 2500 to 6500 and with the lastest report, we seem to have lost more than half and are now around 2100. Our domain authority has dropped accordingly too. I realize that backlinks aren't forever but what in the heck could cause you to loose over 4000 in a one month period?

You've got the right approach there. We do our best to look at the web like Google does, but we don't have quite the resources they do. We do have to make tradeoffs between getting an index out in a more timely manner and getting one out that has a lot of data. The bigger we go, the more problems we run in to. This last index was about half the size of the previous index, which would account for much of that drop. So sorry to scare you!

I'm learning that SEOMOZ isn't google, but they are doing their best to see the web like Google does. I think it's still the best SEO tool out there, just have to remember to not take SEOMOZ's numbers too literally. Ultimately it's about Google ranking and as long as I don't see a big slip there, I shouldn't get too worried. Happy Friday all!

If you are using Open Site Explorer to check your links, after the last update you'd be expecting to see fewer than before.
See the post Rand made on this: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/july-mozscape-update
This might not account for all you are not seeing, but would explain some.

Which backlinks sites to use for full competitive research
Hello, Doing competitive research for really gentle basic link building campaign. Which sites do I need to get a backlink list from besides open site explorer to be most successful? Thanks.

Struggling with the principle of backlinks, all i can see for the competition is directories?
Hey everyone, I have been using the open site explorer to check the linking domains/inbound links of competition for window suppliers. I've read that directories generate pretty much no link juice, yet all i can find for pretty much all of the well ranking competition (other than few very major companies) is directory listings. This leaves me wondering whether just submiitting to 5-10 good relevant directories would help tip me above some of the competition... I've read quite a lot about generating quality backlinks but i still haven't got my head around how to actually do anything myself that would be potentially useful. All i've done so far is post to relevant high authority directories and a couple relevant forums. I have pretty much £0 budget but a decent amount of time and strong graphic design and animation skills so feel like i can put that to use but again would have no idea what to do even if i created something share worthy. I can't imagine succesfully contacting anyone and getting them to link back to me or share my content.. Thanks for any advice...

Just how accurate is anyone's appraisal on this forum?
When people are discussing what affects their search engine rankings on this particular forum, which has got to be one of the most read on the Internet just how much guesswork is really going on? It seems like God almighty Google works from its own criteria and the rest of us all scrap to guess! I myself in the last week of posted various topics on here and are conflicting reports by so-called experts not that I am being critical for the sake of it. If you to one website and said to all the people on this forum just exactly why is it ranking to a degree for this particular key phrase or not as the case may be would there be any truly accurate knowledgeable answers that will come through and explained the difference? If you have a top 10 of most important things that would influence your rankings that are not guesswork would that be possible to say based on knowledge and expertise? And if so spill the beans what are ? What are the movers and shakers in their particular keyword phrases doing ongoing that's getting them the great results we all want ? Or is the entire subject of how well you rank ultimately not totally understood and only the realms of guesswork based on observation. When I was young I trained as electrician which dealt in facts, it seems like this is not possible with the world of business and search engine rankings?

Can't find backlinks shown in report.
I ran an advanced report to show me all the backlinks pointing to a domain. When I go to many of the domains listed, I can't find the link. I've searched the pages by anchor text in the browser and nothing comes up. Anyone know why this would be?

Do I need backlinks?
Hi, My theory is yes I do. But the problem I have is a small budget and competitors who have a big one. My problem is we have a small number of external links and linking root domains. My profile from a domain analysis read like this in March and then May... External Followed Links - Mar 103 | May 257
Moz Pro | | YNWA
Total External Links ------- Mar 114 | May 276 Total Links ------------------- Mar 5,577 | May 24,425 Followed Linking Root Domains - Mar 24 | May 47
Total Linking Root Domains ------- Mar 30 | May 55 As you can see, progrss is being made considering I do this part time for a family website. But what I need is a big bump in these numbers as my 3 compeitors are pulling in silly numbers such as 308, 7000 and 45000 external followed links. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compete with this realisticy without spending a fortune? I am putting the time and effort in so anything you guys can do to help the better. I am using twitter and facebook quite a bit, and seen growth on Twitter go from 40 to 1,350 followers over 7 months. Visits to the site over 7 months have gone up 50% as well. However sales are still looking about 10-15% up on previous year. I need more links coming into the site don't I? And what is the most important part of the Domain Analysis, what shoudl I want to increase first and foremost? Any ideas? Cheers Will0 -
How Can I Find All Backlinks
How can I use site explorer to find out which sites are linking to us thousands of times. It says we have over 300,000 total links pointing to our site. I'm thinking there are some sitewide links from other site(s) making up most of that, but I can't seem to locate it/them?

Is there a "manager view" where I can share just one campaign?
I have an account where we manager several different domains, but I need a manager to only see ONE of those campaigns, not all of them. Is there a manager view where I an share just that one campaign?
