Temporary landing pages and SEO
-
Hi guys! I have a question that has been running through my mind for quite a while now.
On our company, we offer different products that we put on specific landing pages (one per product). This products are "live" on a 20 day period.
Right now, when the product expires, we put a label "This product expired" and return a 404.
Is this the right way to do it? Take into account that keeping the page "alive" is not an option. The options would be:
-
301 redirecting to another listing (should I worry about this implementation being wrong? Wouldn't Google find it suspicous that lots of pages redirect to the same listing?)
-
Return a 200 instead
Thanks for your time!

Agreed! Like with anything the answer is, "Well, it depends."

That is really good advice, i think the missing piece that we don't know in order to recommend the best approach is how much are these landing pages promoted on the web and are people linking to them. It all comes down to whether you are throwing away PR or not.
If a LP has good links pointing to it i would 301 it, if the LP has only a couple of links pointing to it, the slow 200 then 404 is a good approach.
"if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there does it make a sound?"
"if a page 404's and no one is linking to it, does it 404"
in other words, if there is no internal linking to the LP on your site and no one is linking to it and it is not in your sitemap xml files then you can simply remove the URL in WMT and Google will not report it as a 404.

I have to digress on 301s and then bring up soft 404s
You have to watch about sending too many 301s to a single page. Sometimes you have to do this, but I have also seen Google showing soft 404 errors when you have a bunch of many paged 301ing to a single page on sites we manage.
There is a subtle thing we have found on how Google thinks about 301s as it relates to 404s
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2010/06/crawl-errors-now-reports-soft-404s.html
They state that to correct soft 404s one thing you should look at is 2.b "Should redirect to a more accurate URL"
Google prefers that a 301 is more of a one-to-one or several to one.
There was also a post in SEOmoz on this
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/301-redirect-or-relcanonical-which-one-should-you-use
If you send too many 301s to a single page - like the home page, this may look like you are trying to manipulate link juice.
I would be so bold as to say Google prefers a one to one relationship for 301s vs a many to one.
Options
- If you want to just get rid of pages already in the index
After 20 days, show a 200 on the page, update the message to say that this product is no longer available with a link to your search page but then add the noindex meta tag to that page. This will allow Google to spider, but remove the page from the index. You would also need to remove all links on your site to this page after 20 days as well.
Leave up the page for 6 months - 1 year and then setup a 404 as the page is dead and out of the Google index and the 20 day deal has been long gone.
This will get those pages out of the index, tell users where they need to go in case they land on the page and minimize any 404 or soft 404 errors in Google webmaster tools.
- Keep them out of the index to start with
I am assuming that since these pages are only up for 20 days, they do not have time to really gain any search traction to start with and so would not show up in the SERPs (or rank that high if they did).
If that is the case, why not put all these pages in a separate folder that you block with robots.txt and then no follow all links to them. Keep them out of the index to start with.
Sounds like you are optimizing a category type page above the product pages anyway and so you just focus on optimizing the category page vs the product pages themselves.
Beyond that, would need more specifics on the how and the why of what you are doing to try and figure out the if and the when of next steps

How about 301 redirecting to the main product listing with some sort of extra parameter on the URL (?productExpired, for example) that triggers a message like "The product you are looking for expired, check these"?
Of course, then I would add a canonical on the page with the ?productExpired.
Does this make sense?

I would 301 them to the homepage or if you have a main directory landing page that lists all of the offers. You don't want to 301 them to the closest landing page offer because that one too will have a limited life and you'll wind up daisy chaining redirects. Google has no problem with a site having a lot of 301's.

Is image SEO worth it for e-commerce?
I have been trying to find any case studies of people who have optimized images for SEO for their e-commerce website, but haven't been able to find any case study, indicating obtained results. I am wondering how much increase in Google Image search traffic others have been able to obtain when optimizing their e-commerce images for image SEO. I need this information to justify development resources needed for for example an image sitemap, changes to file names and alt texts, title tags and possibly EXIF data. File size is already ok. Hope someone has experience with this and can share some results. Also, would be great if Moz would do a Whiteboard Friday about this 🙂 (hint!).

Threatening SEO practice
Hi all, We have just taken on a site that has had SEO done for 3 years by a different company, but now that company is threatening the client to ruin their site with bad links, and get their site banned. I understand through Webmaster tools that you can monitor backlinks, and file a reconsideration request, but is there any other non-time consuming way of stopping this to start with? Hope someone can shine some light on the very unprofessional practice Thanks Neil

Should ebook content be a download or hosted on site for SEO?
We have written ebook(s) on subjects of interest to our prospects (B-C market). We have taken many recurring questions asked over the years plus helpful graphics and put into short 12+ page ebooks. After filling out form to receive ebook- (first name & email on form) for any option below- Should we: a) send them to Landing page to download ebook to their desktop? b) send them e-mail with link to download ebook? c) send them directly to page on our site with the ebook content? d) something else? My thoughts are to do c) which will put content on site, though 'protected' via gate. This way the search engines can crawl the content. However, if that content is not directly reachable through menu will that degrade the importance of that content? Obviously we want to provide good, helpful information to prospects. We would also love to benefit from that content from a Search point of view if possible. Anyone have experience with this through A/B test or otherwise? Thanks, Steve

SEO Implications when domain ownership and branding changes
I have a couple questions for the SEOMOZ community - and/or it's leader, Rand, if at all possible 🙂 It is very important for us to have good information. Scenario: Company A: National established leader in a niche product currently receives 49% of their traffic from branded keywords. Company A wants to protect and further grow it's gains that have been made in SEO even after it is acquired by Company B. Company B: Is a much larger company that acquires Company A. 1. What could happen to Google rankings when company A is bought out and Company B changes the registered owner and whois record? Could Google see this as a signal that the ownership has changed and then re-evaluate the ranking of Company A's website? 2. What would most likely happen if company B were to change the branding of Company A's established website? Company A currently receives about half of it's traffic from branded keywords. The acquiring company may want to change some of the SEO titles, ALT-Text, H1 tags, etc to also promote itself on the acquired company's site. Thank you all in advance for your help!

Connecting SEO with Your Clients Objectives
Hi Guys, This question is specifically towards trying to make the connection between achieving clients objectives based on your SEO initiatives. Google Universal SERP's tends to make me try to think towards devising more of an online strategy rather than a specific SEO strategy. Whilst obviously social, video, content marketing and all that is increasingly important channels. I think it makes our actions based on trends rather than what matters most for the site to be visible - gain traffic & links (but not limited to this). Questions: 1. What framework or thought process do you use when devising a tailored SEO strategy for your clients? 2. How do you translate all onsite SEO initiatives off-site? I know there is no one fits all answer, however I would truly like to seek the SEO experts out here. Please use your example (not mine) as I think it will best help you answer this question. Note: No reference to the digital marketing framework by Avinash, I am already familiar with this. I have also not made this as a discussion, as I would truly like to get feedback from successful SEO's. Thank you for your answers in advance, Vahe

Is there a better map buidling platform than Google Maps for SEO purposes?
I'm about to publish a blog post and white paper on the Sierra Wine Country (over 100 wineries in the mountains between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe) to my website http://thingsyoushoulddo.com. I'd like to provide an embeddable map. Last week in the whiteboard Friday, Rand talked about how a vimeo embed could link directly back to your website vs. a youtube embed that leads back to youtube. Is there anything similar in the map creation world?

Local SEO- Multiple businesses at one address
Rand was talking about the importance of address format being exactly the same across all citations in last week's WBF http://www.seomoz.org/blog/local-seo-checklist-for-new-sites-whiteboard-friday. But what about business name? I have two unrelated businesses at the same address and am in the process of updating/adding citations for each. Will duplicate citations (identical addy, different business name) harm my Places ranking? Any suggestions? David
