Winning The New SERP Battle
-
I run a niche website (www.picnic-basket.com) that is approaching 10 years old. I have consistently added new content, performed redesigns, etc and WAS rewarded with a #1 placement on Google for my main keyword phrase for quite a long time. All our links are natural, no link-farms and I don't do exchanges either.
I blog, write articles about our niche, have free cookbooks, delicious recipes and are always finding cool new products. FB & Twitter are also maintained.
After Panda I'm now below the fold with amazon.com, bedbathandbeyond.com, worldmarket.com, overstock.com and brookstone.com all above me.
These sites don't have anything to do with my niche other than just selling some items.
ROI is horrible for me with PPC on this keyword phrase. I'm sure Googles' revenue has increased quite a bit in this category because users only see relevant websites up in the paid area.
Through years of hard work I was finally able to beat my old niche competitors but I'm left wondering, How do I beat the "Big Boys"?
Any advice for someone like me?

Come-on Rand...other guru's...Help! Looks like there are many of us that need to know what to do!
Knowing that you aren't alone is "kinda" comforting but it doesn't help the bank account. I was speaking with my adword rep yesterday & raised a bit o' hell. I know they can't do anything but it felt good.
I've always felt that Google was full of it. They've always stated that the person searching is their customer and that search results are supposed to give that searcher the best results possible. HA! I fought that for years seeing poor quality websites beating me when all they had was a 1 page website that was listed on DMOZ.
For the last few years we had real competition. Good websites, good competitors and a fair shake.
Now it seems they have figured out how to increase the odds of the ppc ad being clicked with mega sites like walmart or amazon showing up in the top 4-5 positions leading the searcher to click on the ppc. I mean seriously...google the phrase "picnic baskets" and look at the results.
To that end - Google reported Q3 2012 revenues of $14.10 billion, representing a 45% increase compared to Q3 2011.

It sounded like you were describing us word for word. A couple weeks ago, I started a topic about this. http://www.seomoz.org/q/interesting-serp-trend-i-m-observing
I don't have advice either. Just know you're not alone and other people are feeling your frustration.

You are not alone... I could literally write that entire post about my company/site as well... Only difference is I am being outranked by Target and Walmart after i held the #1 position for years.
I know you are looking for advice, and this isn't advice, just want you to know you are not alone in this mess

New Google Update - weird ranking
Hi I wanted to get your thoughts on this keyword ranking. This page - https://www.key.co.uk/en/key/albatross-heavy-duty-office-chairs-24-stone is now ranking for heavy duty office chair 30 stone We don't mention 30 in the content anywhere, apart from the USPs at the top of the page - could this be it?! I don't know how to change this, or I guess Google is still figuring things out and maybe this will drop off? Love to get some thoughts on this! Becky

Does Google use dateModified or date Published in its SERPs?
I was curious as to the prioritization of dateCreated / datePublished and dateModified in our microdata and how it affects google search results. I have read some entries online that say Google prioritizes dateModified in SERPs, but others that claim they prioritize datePublished or dateCreated. Do you know (or could you point me to some resources) as to whether Google uses dateModified or date Published in its SERPs? Thanks!

SERP's & Search Engine Differences
Hey, I recently modified my pages to conform more closely to the "A" page rankings for MOZ's on-page report card but saw declines in my keyword rankings. They keywords in question appear in my title tag, description, one image alt tag, either an h1 or h2 tag, and 4 times throughout the text of the document. I don't think MOZ would recommend these changes if it was seen as stuffing - is there any other reason why my rankings might have dropped by 1-4 positions? Also, does anyone know of a good article/book for Yahoo/Bing SEO? My Yahoo & Bing rankings are far below Google's in most cases. Any help would be appreciated! -Michael

Dramatic drop after rapid rise for new site
just launched a new site edenprairieexperts.com. The site jumped to the first page on yahoo and bing within a couple of days then fell off a cliff and isnt in the top 10 pages. Any reason for this? seems really strange for me. The only think I can think of is I got some really poor quality back links from someone screwing with me. If someone could take a glance at the site or give me some general direction I would appreciate it.

What do you think of Google SERP encryption?
Really interesting post by Search Engine Land about this "issue" for tracking conversion, especially for long tail keyword research. I suppose this change will be also applied on all google search pages (.ca, .fr etc.). I Really don't think Webmaster tools is a serious compensation in Analytics for this.

New Blog Post Ranking Fluctuation
I wrote a recent blog post on Friday. It was indexed and ranked on the first page on Monday. On Wednesday, it was nowhere to be found. I noticed that, after a few more recent posts, it was on page two of my blog. So I expanded my results so that it was back on my first page. Today, it is back on the first page - same spot as before. Was that my problem, or could it be something else I am unaware of?
