Redirection plugin: wordpress vs apache module?
-
Hi,
Any one familiar with the wordpress plugin 'redirection'
Are there any SEO benefits of having the plugin write the 301 redirects into the .htaccess?
The standard mode does not use .htaccess but has wordpress genertae the 301s
Thanks
-
Thanks William, nice to hear advice from some one who has been using the plugin.
I'll go ahead and use the apache module to keep the server usage low.
-
Thank for the advice Paul, I'll go ahead and write into the .htaccess as your recommend.

Everything Paul says is true and with regards to the SEO perspective faster is better. Speed is a ranking factor which Google looks at.
I've actually used "Redirection" on a few of my sites before and the speed difference between redirects using WordPress redirect VS Apache redirect is marginal but the resource usage difference is vast. It requires very little server resources to read the .htaccess file and redirect compared to running through the core of WordPress to generate the 301 then send it.
Point the plugin to the .htaccess file and use the Apache module instead and you'll get both the benefit of slightly improved redirect times with the added benefit of using less server resources to do it.

Like paul mentioned, htaccess redirects are faster compared to a wordpress plugin.
but if you a huge number of redirection required on pages/posts then go for the plugin.
-
The big benefit to having the redirects written into htaccess is that htaccess will run them much more quickly (and with lower server overhead) than from inside WordPress. If you only have a few redirects at a time to correct for moved pages or creating short URLs for marketing campaigns, doing it within the Redirection plugin is fine.
But if you're writing a large number of redirects (to handle a site move for example) you're far better off writing them into htaccess.
Paul

Do you still loose 15% of value of inbound links when you redirect your site from http to https (so all inbound links to http are being redirected to https version)?
I know when you redesign your on website, you loose about 15% internally due to the 301 redirects (see moz article: https://moz.com/blog/accidental-seo-tests-how-301-redirects-are-likely-impacting-your-brand), but I'm wondering if that also applies to value of inbound links when you redirect your http://www.sitename.com to https://www.sitename.com. I appreciate your help!

Importance of 301 Redirects
Hello, I have been brought in at the last minute to consult for an e-commerce client who is about to relaunch their website. The site currently receives 8000 visits a month, 3100 of which are from organic search. They have a few thousand product pages. The web development firm they are using is changing all of the old product page urls and using 'search engine friendly' urls for the new site, which is expected to launch in a few weeks. However, they did not/are not planning on including 301 redirects from the old URLs. Other than simply stating 'this will be bad for your SEO', what would be a correct way of explaining to the client how much of a problem it will be if their new site launches without 301s. For example, is this a big enough issue to delay the launch of the site / get in a contract dispute with the web developer?

Seo Yoast Plugin
In Yoast seo plugin, under the general settings is Sitewide meta settings, under which there is an option to either check or leave unchecked Noindex subpages of archives which says: If you want to prevent /page/2/ and further of any archive to show up in the search results, enable this. I am very confuse if to check or not. What is the best seo practice? Most of our posts are in categories which have 2-4 pages.

WordPress & Page Numbers
Hi, I am working on a large WP site for a client and have an issue with duplicate content and page numbers. I am using the Yoast SEO plugin but can't seem to resolve the issue. Let me give an example: If I go to a popular category, for example F1, there are over 10 pages of content for the category and although the URL changes, the Title and Meta Description stay the same. Now...if I was using a template for the title and description I could add the page number variable, but as I am overwriting the template with SEO specific category information I can't use variables and hence the problem! This is such a common problem I know somebody will have an answer! Thanks

EzineArticles WordPress Plugin
Any thoughts on the EzineArticles plugin for WordPress? I read that it provides "the ability to simultaneously publish new posts to the web and submit them as articles to EzineArticles.com" Could this lead to duplicate content penalties?
