404 Errors with my RSS Feed/sitemap
-
In my google webmasters I just started getting 404 errors that I'm not sure how to redirect.
I'm getting quite a few that are ending in /feed/ for instance
/nyc-accident-injury/feed/
contact-us-thank-you/feed/and then also a problem with my sitemap I guess? With
/site-map/?postsort=tags
The domain is pulversthompson.com

Hey Jeffrey,
So in general I wouldn't lose too much sleep over GWT 404 errors. No matter how many I've fixed, a few pop up that I have no idea how Google landed on them. The ones I'd worry about most are the ones that have links pointing to them, internal or external. GWT should give you the referring page so check those out and fix them.
If there are a few that keep cropping up just 301 redirect them to another page.
You should take a look at the sitemap and if there are /feed/ URLs in there, remove them and resubmit.
Hope that helps,
Jacob

Hi Jeffrey.
I assume you have your sitemaps uploaded and indexed in Google Webmaster Tools.
You should go to your Sitemap panel and look for the warning on the specific sitemaps (image).
When you click on the warning you can see the 404 error codes (I don't have any images to show for this, since I don't have any sites with that specific error).
And if I remember correctly you will be able to click on the specific links, that are redirecting to a 404-page, and thus be able to either setup a 301 redirect, or fix the 404.
Since most of your errors are regarding a /feed/ it's likely that there's links on other pages linking to them.

I hope I've helped you a bit further, if not, please elaborate your question.

Getting Google to index our sitemap
Hi, We have a sitemap on AWS that is retrievable via a url that looks like ours http://sitemap.shipindex.org/sitemap.xml. We have notified Google it exists and it found our 700k urls (we are a database of ship citations with unique urls). However, it will not index them. It has been weeks and nothing. The weird part is that it did do some of them before, it said so, about 26k. Then it said 0. Now that I have redone the sitemap, I can't get google to look at it and I have no idea why. This is really important to us, as we want not just general keywords to find our front page, but we also want specific ship names to show links to us in results. Does anyone have any clues as to how to get Google's attention and index our sitemap? Or even just crawl more of our site? It has done 35k pages crawling, but stopped.

SEO Strategy - Content/Outreach/Links
Hi everyone I'm trying to prioritise my tasks for 2018 & wondered if anyone had any useful templates they use? In terms of SEO tasks, my priority was going to be content/outreach/links - Focusing on user guides/blogs onsite Then outreach articles/some PR that doesn't go against Google guidelines offsite. My struggle with the onsite content/blogs we produce is we have no real social media plan/manager so my content outreach always seems hampered by this. I've tried taking on some of the social stuff, but this ends up being too much for just me to do. I wondered if there were any other SEOs who face this issue and who have found some good solutions? I'm stuck in a bit of a rut and can't seem to effectively push forward with outreach/content writing. Thank you Becky

Using two 404 NOT FOUND pages
Hi all, I was wondering if any of you can advise whether it's no issue to use two separate custom 404 pages. The 404 pages would be different for different parts of the site. For instance, if you're on /community/ and you enter a non-existing page on: www.sample.com/community/example/ it would give you a different 404 page than someone who runs into a non existing page at: www.sample.com/definition/example/ Does anybody have experience with this and would this be fine?

404 with a Javascript Redirect to the index page...
I have a client that is wanting me to issue a 404 on her links that are no longer valid to a custom 404, pause for 10 seconds, then rediirect to the root page (or whatever other redirect logic she wants)...to me it seems trying to game googlebot this way is a "bad idea" Can anyone confirm/deny or offer up a better suggestion?

Recovering from Programmers Error
Hey Everybody! Last year one of my bigger sites hit a snaffu. I was getting about 300k + hits a day from google, and then, when a developper released an update with a robots.txt file that basically blocked google from the entire site. We didn't notice the bug until a few days later, but by then, it was already too late. My google traffic dropped to 30k a day and I've been having the hardest time coming back ever since. As a matter of fact, hundreds of sites that were aggregating my content started outranking me for my own terms. For over a year, I've been working on building what I lost back and everything seemed to be coming together. I was back at 100k+ hits a day Until today... My developpers repeated the exact same error as last year. They blocked google from crawling my site for over 5 days and now I'm down to 10k se hits a day. My question : Has anyone encountered this problem before and what did you do to come back?

Access denied errors in webmaster tools
I notice today Ihave 2 access denied errors. I checked the help which says: Googlebot couldn’t access a URL on your site because your site requires users to log in to view all or some of your content. (Tip: You can get around this by removing this requirement for user-agent Googlebot.) Therefore I think it may be because I have added a login page for users and googlebot can't access it. I'm using wordpress and presume I need to amend the robots.txt to remove the requirement for google to log in but how do I do that? Unless I'm misunderstanding the problem altogether!

Local Business schema / markup
What markup should local businesses employ on their website? I'm aware of the newer schema.org markup but does Google still use rich snippets, geotags, etc.?

Google Product Feed Newbie Question
Hi, I don't know much of anything about Google Pruduct Feeds. Here is my starting point on thia: 1. Is this really free? We'd be doing it without Google checkout, just landing on our own pages with our own checkout. 2. Where do you upload the file? 3. What determines if you come up or not as a result? Any strategy or tactics involved? 4. We're the manufacturer of a product and late to the product feed game. The description that Google has used for our products is not ours or great. How do we change that product description that Google has for our products? Thanks!
