Why is MOZ and Google search Volume so different?
-
A search term in MOZ shows the monthly search volume to be 49K. In Google, the same term shows the search volume at only 1300 monthly searches. Which do I trust?
Thanks,
Don

You've answered a question I've been searching for today so thanks Bryan.
Whilst I fully understand why Google does not allow Moz to access those figures, I cannot see the value in understanding solely Bing stats - I'll end up optimising our website for Bing and it's Google we need stats for. Is the Google Keyword Planner the same as Moz's keyword difficulty tool? What's the difference and benefits?
Thanks
Jason

Thanks Donna and Bryan.
I will check out Rand's article.
-
Totally agree Bryan.
-
Oh no question about that Donna!
To my knowledge there aren't any tools that can/will give exact figures. But in comparison to the Moz Keyword Analysis tool (which provides BING search results), using Google Keyword Planner is about as close as you can get to an "approximate" number.
All these tools do is provide us with an idea of what to focus on. Like Rand mentioned in his post (which is great)...
"THE IMPORTANT LESSON: Running discovery-focused searches in AdWords may not show you all the valuable/high-volume keyword phrases connected to a word/phrase."
And then he goes on to recommend ways to address the challenge. FUN FUN FUN!
-
And even then, you have to be careful because Google lies by omission. Rand explains in this Moz Blog post dated February 14, 2012.
-
Absolutely!! Glad I could shed some insight on this for you.
But to answer your question, I would only use/trust Google's Keyword Planner especially since you can narrow it down to specific areas and get actual SPM data.
Have a great weekend and good luck with your project!
-
Yep! kind of crazy.
Well, thanks again. I guess we live with it.
I really appreciate your timely response.
-
Unfortunately yeah that's the deal man.
When I first saw what you are seeing I called into Moz and was like HEY!! What is this nonsense? That's when they dropped it on me that Google doesn't provide them that information.
So the only data you get that is actually from Google (even when you select the "Google" drop down option) is the Keyword Difficulty.
-
Hi Bryan,
So even though I selected Google using the drop down button, it really doesn't matter, I'll still get Bing results? I see the note at the top that you are referring to. If it doesn't use Google results I would think they would remove the selection for Google from the drop down selection.
Thanks for the input.
Thanks,
Don
-
Hey Don!
The reason is because Moz keyword tool pulls the SPM (searches per month) data from Bing unfortunately. Google doesn't allow Moz to access this info from their API.
If you notice up at the top of the column it actually states "BING Search Volume". I've added a screenshot to reference. Hope this helps!

404 error for unknown URL that Moz is finding in our blog
I'm receiving 404 errors on my site crawl for messinastaffing.com. They seem to be generating only from our blog posts which sit on Hubspot. I've searched high and low and can't identify why our site URL is being added at the end - I've tried every link in our blog and cannot repeat the error the crawl is finding. For instance: Referer is: http://blog.messinastaffing.com/take-charge-career-story-compelling-cover-letter/ 404 error is: http://blog.messinastaffing.com/take-charge-career-story-compelling-cover-letter/www.messinastaffing.com I agree that the 404 error URL doesn't exist but I can't identify where Moz is finding it. I have approximately 75 of these errors - one for every blog on our site. Beth Morley Vice President, Operations Messina Group Staffing Solutions

Is it possible to block Moz from crawling sites?
Hi, is it possible to stop Moz from crawling a site at the server level? Not that I am looking to do this or anything, but here's why I'm asking. I have been crawling a site that is managed (currently by 2 parties), and I noticed that this week pages crawled went from 80 (last week) to 1 page!! I know, what? See my image attached... and the issues all went to zero "0"....! So is it possible that someone can't prevent Moz from crawling the site at the server level? I checked the robots.txt file on the site, but nothing there. I'm curious. dYNUwjd.jpg

Duplicate Titles Shown in Moz Analytics
Hello, My Moz analytics show over 50 duplicate titles. This because my website title is shown on each page (eg About us | Social Engagement, Contact us | Social Engagement, etc.) Is this really an error to be fixed, that otherwise will impact rankings? Or can I leave it as it is? I don't mind having my website title on each page, but if its worth removing it due to duplicate issues impacting ranking, I will remove 🙂 In this case, does someone have any suggestion on how to do this? Which files should I modify? (Im using Wordpress CMS, and I dont see each page code) Thanks in advance.

Google Hiding Indexed Pages from SERPS?
Trying to troubleshoot an issue with one of our websites and noticed a weird discrepancy. Our site should only have 3 pages in the index. The main landing page with a contact form and two policy pages, yet google reports over 1,100 pages (that part is not a mystery, I know where they are coming from.....multi site installations of popular CMS's leave much to be desired in actually separating websites) Here is a screen shot showing the results of the site command: http://www.diigo.com/item/image/2jing/oseh I have set my search settings to show 100 (the max number of results) results per page. Everything is fine until I get to page three where I get the standard "In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 122 already displayed." But wait a second, I clicked on page three, now there are only two pages of results and the number of results reported has dropped to 122 http://www.diigo.com/item/image/2jing/r8c9 When I click on the "show omitted results" I do get some more results, and the returned results jumps back up to 1,100. However I only get three pages of results. And when I click on the last page the number of results returned changes to 205 http://www.diigo.com/item/image/2jing/jd4h Is this a difference between indexes (same thing happens when I turn instant search back on, Shows over 1,100 results but when I get to the last page of results it changes to 205). Any other way of getting this info? I am trying to go in and identify how these pages are being generated, but I have to know what ones are showing up in the index for that to happen. Only being able to access 1/5th of the pages indexed is not cool. Anyone have any idea about this or experience with it? For reference I was going through with SEOmoz's excellent toolbar and exporting the results to csv (using the Mozilla plugin). I guess google doesn't like people doing that so maybe this is a way to protect against scraping by only showing limited results in the Site: command. Thanks!

SEOmoz vs Google Webmaster Tools on incoming links
I'm working on basic SEO for http://queueassoc.com. Google has indexed the non-www verions of the pages and these are what the SERPS return SEOmoz toolbar shows that all of the incoming links juice goes to the www. versions of the pages, none to the non-www version. Yesterday I set up GWMT for the site, submitted a sitemap with the www version of the pages and set the default address to the www version. I had to verify both versions of the site in order to do this and in looking at the non-www version I saw that Google had all the incoming links there and none in the www.version, the opposite of what SEOmoz shows. Is this just because Google only has the non-www versions in its index? Will they show the links to the www version once they get them in the index? I'm worried about losing Google Page Rank value or SEOmoz DA by making this switch.

Cant understand Seo moz analysis
Did a semoz analysis of site www.1stclassdriving.co.uk and it came up with 484 pages with duplicate titles and 484 with duplicate content. Also gave me a 531st ranking for search term "Driving Lessons" (with many smaller schools with better rankings)- so I think that I may have a problem 1-Duplicate titles - I have many area pages - one for each of the post codes that we cover (some 40 odd) Each page is titled "Driving Lessons in "xxx" where xxx is the area.
Moz Pro | | Brian_Worger
Plus each Instructor has their own page which is tiled "Driving Lessons in xxx" where xxx is the more local towns/areas covered.
Is this the use of the term Driving Lessons xxx on each page the problem? The report doesnt seem to make this clear -it simply lists each page on the site 2- Duplicate content puzzles me as the content does differ although each instructor page has probably 80% content derived from a master page. Attach screenshot - hope someone can help Many thanx Brian0
