Choosing Focus Keywords
-
Hello everyone!
I am new to the community and I have a question about determining keywords. I have created a blog {LulusLikes.com} to practice my SEO.
I have installed the Yoast SEO plugin and I have noticed the plugin always encourages you to choose a different focus keyword. So if my focus keyword is "Dog of the Week" and it's a weekly contest, wouldn't that be my focus keyword each time I had that type of post?
How should I choose my focus keyword for that type of post?
I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Thank you so much! This is the best explanation I've gotten so far!

No problem
What you would want to do is learn a little about site architecture, and how different pages will target different thing. Think of a sire like Zappos:
- homepage - targets something broad like "shoes" and "shoes for sales" etc
- shoes categories - target things like "men's shoes, men's dress shoes" etc
- subcategories - "men's dress shoes black"
- finally products - "size 9 men's dress shoes black"
- even resources - "how to choose the most comfortable men's shoes"
So your homepage should target the broadest concept / keywords. Then you might have category pages targeting things slightly more specific. Then your posts would target informational searches of very specific things people are looking for.

Hi There
We were just saying the type of content being created seemed like a very good fit for sharing on social media.
I'd say if it's your goal to be practicing SEO - that process and SEO work should start way before writing a new blog post and entering a focus keyword. You would want to begin everything with keyword research. This helps you determine what to create content about to rank for things.
You may also want to learn a little about how different pages should rank for different things - and your homepage should target your main over arching topic. This will be usually the broadest, most highly searched term.
There's some great resources on keyword research:

Yes, I think it is safe to say that ALL of my traffic is from social media since I just started and have a tiny little following. But, I would like to learn how to get traffic based on my SEO. I really appreciate you breaking it down for me. That makes sense to find a "gap" and fill it with content.
So if I'm not so much focusing on one single keyword per post, should I focus on adding overall keywords through out my whole website? Like incorporating "dog clothes" or "dog fashion" into all my posts? I know not to stuff keywords, but if I can organically incorporate them?
Sorry for all my newbie questions, but I really appreciate your help!

Like I said earlier, this is a brand NEW blog to try to help me learn SEO (which I am clearly terrible at) so does that mean I need more text so it's not appearing only as social media? I did use some Instagram posts to get started. So that is probably why it looks like that.
I guess what I am wanting to do is make it like a fashion blog so I can promote products. Those have SEO, right? I find them when I search for them. So would that mean I should focus on overall keywords to use throughout my website? Like maybe "dog clothes" or "pet clothes"?
My "dog contest" it's a contest I hold on Instagram and then post the winner's images on my website. So wouldn't I want to optimize it for that?
Sorry for all my newbie questions but I REALLY appreciate your help!

I cant say any other thing than @evolvingSEO he is right, your content clearly looks like social media.
There is an opportunity for image search of course, thatswhy you could name the puppy/dog you write about like I said above - but your traffic screams out social mediaIf you optimize for dog contest, just because it is searched a lot, you will frustrate any person wich want to participate on a dog contest (as long as you dont do dog contests).

Hi There
To step back a second, not all blog posts or pieces of content need a focus keyword. It depends on the goals of your content, and how you are trying to get it traffic. It looks like a lot of your content may be best suited to get traffic from social media etc. That's great, and in that case just write your article and don't worry about the focus keyword too much because it may rank for stuff by happenstance, but your main traffic sources won't be SEO.
That said, sometimes you may create content because you specifically see an opportunity to maybe rank for something where there is a "gap" in existing content in Google's search results. For example, you may notice a lack of great results for something like "pembroke welsh vs cardigan corgi" - and as a goal, you may set out to create the best piece of content on that topic to rank for it, and SEO is your primary goal. In that case, you'd enter "pembroke welsh vs cardigan corgi" into Yoast, and it will tell you how well your article is optimized for that based upon simple best practices.
So in other words - focus keyword is great when you know your target keyword ahead of time and are writing an article based off of that. If you're just writing an article for non-SEO purposes, maybe you'd refine a target keyword after the fact, but it's not a huge concern.
Choosing your focus keyword also has to do with just knowing good keyword research in general. There's two main factors to think about. Search volume and competition.
- Search volume - how many people look for the keyword per month. For blog posts it's best to stick in the 10-1,000 searches per month range.
- Competition - there's no single competition metric (Google does not provide one) but you can judge competition by experience of looking at search results or using a tool like Moz's keyword difficulty - which will give you a number from 1-100.
The trick of course is to try to find the highest volume but lowest difficulty, and that's a great beginning point for choosing focus keywords.

Thanks for your response! Okay that makes sense. So if I make my focus keyword for example - "brown retriever puppy" then I would be better off making one of my main keywords "dog contest" ? Because that is something people search for.
Am I understanding that correctly?
Thanks again for the help!

Yoast tells you what people search for, i guess noone searches for "Dog of the week".
If you write for a targeted Keyword, you should do that only one time - otherwise, what should google show in SERPs??But in your case, Dog of the week is not the targeted keyword. Don't know how people searching for dogs you write about, but that should be the target keyword - maybe for the category - and with the post about the dog of the week should target other things. Maybe "brown labrador retriever puppy"

Titles tags: Smart to split brand name composed of multiple keywords?
Hello, We've been following the best practices outlined in this Moz article for title tags for a long time, however I have a question about the spelling of the brand name when the brand name is composed of keywords. For example, let's say your company is called FitnessGearUSA and your website url is www.FitnessGearUSA.com. How would you spell the brand name in the title tag? In a single word 'FitnessGearUSA' or in 3 words 'Fitness Gear USA'. We've been using the first approach for a long time, but I am starting to think that the second approach would be better, especially when the customer might include a single keyword that's part of the brane name in his search For example, a product page title tag would then look like this:

Model ABC Weight Lifting Bar | Fitness Gear USA I am inclined to think that this page would rank better for a search like:
"Model ABC Lifting Bar USA" Thoughts?0 -
keywords are not ranking as per the expectation and need site review too
Hello, Recently We have a taken a project " http://customerconnect-services.com/ " and are responsible for the Digital Marketing for the website. FYI, we have been following the best On-Page SEO practices ever since we took the project: Performing Keyword Research, Finalizing the Keywords,Using those in the Page-Title, Meta-Descriptions, Heading Tags and of course in the Content as per MOZ suggestions & SEO standards. But, we are unable to rank in first page; all the considered keywords have a ranking of 51+ which is a serious matter of concern for us. We have also checked whether the Domain / URL has been blacklisted, but it's not (Not even by Google). We are therefore unable to figure out what is going wrong even after following so many best practices to get the keywords a good ranking (1st & 2nd page of SERPs). Therefore I would like to request you to provide your expert opinions in this regard by checking what is it that we are not getting right. The website url is http://customerconnect-services.com/. As this is a high-priority issue for us & the client is a prestigious one of course, please help. Looking forward to hearing from you at the earliest. Thanks & Regards,

Exact keyword in domain - does it work
Hi, a hypothetical question: let's say there is a fresh domain travelnorway.com (of course there is already domain like that, I am using it just as a example) Will it rank first on googe for "travel norway" query on google?( I mean in situation where 30 other companies are trying to rank for the same phrase) Thanks!

Does a GTLD extension 'count' as part of the target keyword?
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me. Reading about GTLDs, I came across this quote from TSO Host: 'What we don’t know is whether an extension can double up as a keyword, which is picked up by Google and treated identically to the rest of a domain name. I.e. - would ‘bristolguitars.music’ have more ranking potential than ‘bristolguitars.com’ as ‘music’ is a relevant search word?' Source: https://www.tsohost.com/blog/how-do-new-gtlds-affect-seo Does anyone know if a GTLD extension does double up as a keyword? For example, if Nike buys 'Nike.shoes', does this double as the keyword 'Nike shoes', or is Google and other search engines just looking at the domain name _before _the GTLD extension? I'm looking at .photography for examples (not my niche) and seeing folks are having mixed results ranking for 'Keyword + Photography', so would be keen to hear your thoughts.

Title Keyword Order Question
Hey there, Hoping someone could provide me with an answer / some insight into this. As an example, if I were to be targeting "Fish markets in" and "Fish shops in" as my keyword(s). And my site name was "The Fish Guide". I am trying to populate my title tags as best as possible without sacrificing readability and definitely making an effort to avoid the the spam-factor. Ideally I'd like to rank well (just focusing on titles at the moment, nothing else) when a user searches for "Fish markets in London" and **"Fish shops in London" **or "Fish markets in Los Angeles" or "Fish shops in Berlin" etc. If I were to use the following structure in my titles (in this case for London): "Fish markets and fish shops in London - The Fish Guide" Would this work as I hope? I.E. If a user searched for either "Fish shops in London" or "Fish markets in London" would the format of my title in this example work or would I need to have "Fish Markets in London" and "Fish Shops in London" grouped together? E.G. "Fish Markets in London - Fish Shops in London - The Fish Guide" Thanks!

Fluctuation in Ranking for the keywords
We were ranking well for most of the keywords. These keywords were at first page i.e mostly @ 1st and 2nd position in Google. But we have put the following tag ie no index tag for our pages by mistake and after that the ranking fluctuated & fell down in Google search results as our pages were out of index in Google .We have removed the noindex tag after encountering the problem. Now I can see my pages are cached & indexed in Google after submitting to index in Google webmaster tool. Can I regain my ranking for the keywords and within how many days I would regain my previous ranking?

Someone is building anchor text links with child porn keywords..help :-(
Hey Everyone; I recently found that there are tons of links to my url (30+) from several sites with the anchor text "download child porn, kiddie porn, and the likes". Although the sites linking to us where the person built the links do not have this content (thank god) it is just my url + the horrible anchor text someone is putting. [added image] Obviously I would not do that to my own site especially since I was ranked for over 15 keywords in the top 5 spots on Google and Bing. I am guessing its a competitor and I am wondering that is there any way I can remove them? Is this negative seo? Also could this be the reason my site has dropped off google page 1 last month for all my positions? I am consistently trying to rebuild but my positions are flying all over the place. Im going from ranking #12 one week to #198 the next; then to #60 and finally not even on google or bing anymore; then back to #50, etc for the past month and a half... Its very aggravating and it has hurt a few of my websites; im at a total loss on how to recover now if this is the case...It seems they have started to build these links in January from what I can find on the postings.. Thank you SEOMOZ im so happy im a member now. Any suggestions on how i can get these links off or if it is why my site has lost its original rankings.. Should I just can my website and start all over with a different URL? How can I watch out for this in the future? Any help would be so so so greatly appreciated and valued 🙂 xpVjMw8
