Lets say you've got a website and it had quite a few pages that for lack of a better term were like an infomercial, 6-8 pages of slightly different topics all essentially saying the same thing.  You could all but call it spam.

      www.site.com/page-1

      www.site.com/page-2

      www.site.com/page-3

      www.site.com/page-4

      www.site.com/page-5

      www.site.com/page-6

Now you decided to consolidate all of that information into one well written page, and while the previous pages may have been a bit spammy they did indeed have SOME juice to pass through. Your new page is:

      www.site.com/not-spammy-page

You then 301 redirect the previous 'spammy' pages to the new page.  Now the question, do I immediately re-submit an updated xml sitemap to Google, which would NOT contain all of the old URL's, thus making me assume Google would miss the 301 redirect/seo juice.  Or do I wait a week or two, allow Google to re-crawl the site and see the existing 301's and once they've taken notice of the changes submit an updated sitemap?

Probably a stupid question I understand, but I want to ensure I'm following the best practices given the situation, thanks guys and girls!

I think that - adding the new URL while keeping the old ones in XML sitemap for a bit - is your best idea. You can manually add your new URL to index using GWT tools, as well, but I think it's best practice to wait for your site to be crawled again before removing old links from XML sitemap.

There was a Google Webmaster Central office-hours hangouts where John Mueller was talking about this.

The idea was, that you should let googlebot crawl the old pages also, so they can pick up the redirects.

Regarding my previous answer: Might be an idea to include the new page to the sitemap, without removing the old ones. (so they can crawl the old versions and pick up the 301 redirects).

I agree. Do it as soon as you can. You don't have 50 pages of duplicate content so i wouldn't worry too much.

I disagree, the new page is the most important one so I would do everything I can that one gets indexed as fast as possible including making sure the sitemap with the new page gets to Google. Only 1 page on a Web site won't get you in trouble probably for duplicate content.

                Hey,

When we had made to merge pages, we have been waiting for a few days after the new page went live, before updating the xlm sitemaps. It is always better to give time to Google to recrawl the old versions.Gr. Keszi

What to do with old content after 301 redirect

I'm going through all our blog and FAQ pages to see which ones are performing well and which ones are competing with one another. Basically doing an SEO content clean up. Is there any SEO benefit to keeping the page published vs trashing it after you apply a 301 redirect to a better performing page?

                  301 Redirects in subfolders

Hi, we're making our site into a static site but I would like to transfer the Google juice. Most of the links and database exist on subfolders though. Could I simply do 301 redirects on the subfolders and retain the value or does it have to be on the full domain?

Is there a way for me to automatically download a website's sitemap.xml every month?

From now on we want to store all our sitemap.xml over the next years. Its a nice archive to have that allows us to analyse how many pages we have on our website and which ones were removed/redirected. Any suggestions? Thanks

                  301 redirect not working

Hi there! I have recently moved a domain that has been indexed by google and setup redirects so that it forwards to the new domain. It seems like the only redirect that actually is working is the canonical and main domain but every other page and or page nested within a folder are not working. Here is an example of some of the redirects. Am I doing this wrong? It seems to be going to the new domain but can't find the actual pages.... RewriteEngine On
                  RewriteBase /
                  RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !agoodsweep.com$ [NC]
                  RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://agoodsweep.com/$1 [L,R=301]
                  redirect 301 woodstoveservicerepair.html http://agoodsweep.com/woodstoveservicerepair/
redirect 301 /westchesterchimney.html http://agoodsweep.com/west-chester-chimney/ Thanks in advance for any help!!

How do I fix a 301 Redirect Loop?

Saturday I waas doing some correcting of some duplicate titles, including nofollowing tags, etc. (my main problem was duplicate titles due to tags and categories being indexed). Now this morning I see that one of my pages refuses to load, citing a 301 redirect loop. http://www.incredibleinfant.com/feeding/switching-baby-formula/ Originally, the page was posted under the wrong category. http://www.incredibleinfant.com/uncategorized/switching-baby-formula I resaved it under the correct category (feeding) and now it won't load. Can someone help me figure out how to correct this mess? Thanks so much Heather

Can I remove 301 redirects after some time?

Hello, We have an very large number of 301 redirects on our site and would like to find a way to remove some of them. Is there a time frame after which Google does not need a 301 any more? For example if A is 301 redirected to B, does Google know after a while not to serve A any more, and replaces any requests for A with B? How about any links that go to A? Or: Is the only option to have all links that pointed to A point to B and then the 301 can be removed after some time? Thank you for you you help!

Loss of search engine positions after 301 redirect - what went wrong?!?

Hi Guys After adhering to the On Page optimisation suggestions given by SEOmoz, we redirected some of old urls to new ones.  We set 301 redirects from the old pages to new on a page by page basis but our search engine ranking subsequently fell off the radar and lost PR. We confirmed redirection with fiddler and it shows 301 permanent redirect on every page as expected. To manage redirection using a common code logic we executed following: In Http module, using “rewrite path” we route “all old page requests” to a page called “redirect.aspx? oldpagename =[oldpagename]”.  This happens at server side. In redirect.aspx we are redirecting from old page to new page using 301 permanent redirect. In the browser, when old page is requested, it will 301 redirect to new page. In hope we and others can learn from our mistakes - what did we do wrong ?!? Thanks in advance. Dave - www.paysubsonline.com
