Changing from .com to .com.au
-
Hi All, we are looking for some guidance please, if at all possible. We have .com domain (the domain is older than 10 years), we have been using it for 2 years. We also have .com.au version of the domain (the domain is 2 years old, pointing to the .com domain) and isn't being used. We are an Australian based company. Our question is, should we be using .com.au instead of .com and if so, how would you advise going about doing the change over without having huge SEO impact on our business (negatively). We are on the home page for most of the searches we have optimized for, but we are always below the .com.au's - which is why we are considering the possibility of the move? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated

Thank you for your feed back. Sorry for timely response I am inundated with work and have had an ill 2 two year old and Telsta line outage ( Aussie service provider ).
I have chosen to stay with the .com mainly because I am starting to get weekly responses from google searches and actually just closed a big deal from someone who found us on google. So if it works don't to change it. I do agree with focusing on local links, which is what I have been doing over the past 4 - 6 weeks and it has increase our local ranking lately. Going to focus on that and build on local linking. According to Moz Search Visibility in the past two weeks we have had a higher visibility result than our competitors. As far as my international search result go that's an added bonus but not our main focus.
All our hard work on SEO for our website seems to be paying off now. So going to stay with the .com than risk the move.
Thank you. -
I see that you already decided to stick with the .com domain.
It's fine, albeit a conservative choice, even though I would have started considering more seriously the idea of migrating to a .com.au domain name if - as you say - you're struggling vs those ccTlds domains, which outrank you even if objective factors (link profile, DA, PA) are better in your case.
I say it because of the lift effect a ccTld may mean: given parity of pondered factor, one ranking signal improved can provide you a big positive change.
However, I agree with you that migrating your domain may be a risk because of all the things that can go wrong during a migration.
Therefore, look at others geotargeting signals. For instance, look at from where your backlinks are coming. You say you have clients from all over the world, therefore I suspect that you target the global market also when creating the link profile of your site, and considered less important earning links from local websites or sites targeting your region.
Maybe you should start targeting more also those sites, so to give a clear geotargeting sitgnal to Google.
Obviously, this is a generic suggestion, as I don't know that much about your site and niche, but remember: international SEO is not just about domain terminations and geo-targeting in Search Console, but also many others signals, being the origin of inbound links one of the most relevant ones.

Hi Verve,
Sorry haven't responded straight away. My two year has been very ill and consumed all of my time. Firstly thank you for your response. My answer to John above would pretty much the same to yours so not going to copy paste.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I think .com is worth sticking with because of current ranking I have had three leads in the last two days from my rankings, but I do believe I am falling short one top spots because of the .com / .au difference. After a lot of consideration, pro's vs cons I think its best to stick with the .com changing to .com.au I think will have to much of a negative ranking response and may take 6 months to a year to recover.
Thank you again for taking the time to response. Enjoy the rest of your week! -
Hi John,
Sorry haven't responded straight away. My two year has been very ill and consumed all of my time. Firstly thank you for your response.I'm in the top three - eight for most searches and when using location specific ( Gold Coast ) then we are number one, two or three. It just seems we fighting against .com.au domain rather than design quality or content source for the top spots.
We do have clients in Canada, UK, Saudi, South Africa & China but our focus is the Australian market, everything else is a bonus.
I have given it sooo much thought and I keep believing .com is the one to stick with but I am left with the .com.au doubt over ranking top positioning within Australia.
Thank you. -
HI Kevin,
I also agree with what John said above. " depends on how you set up the .com."
In summary, there are no TLDs ( Top Level Domain .com. .org etc ) that Google finds preferential to others; they are all treated equally in rankings. There are some geo-specific TLDs ( Like yours ) that Google will default to a specific country and use that as an indicator that the website is more important in a specific geographic region. But all TLDs are treated equally.

If you think your ranking is due to .com? then you need have clear competitors analysis metrics before switching from .com to .com.au . But For sure it will have impact.

It depends on your customer and how you set up the .com.
Have you selected an geo-targeting for your website? This article could be of assistance https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/62399?hl=en
Also is your customer based solely in Australia? If your customer is only Australia based it maybe worth considering a change. Need more data. ie is Australia, the State or town in the Title visible on each search?
Also for the sites ranking above you - need more competitive analysis, than .au as the possible cause. Worthy discussion.

Should I use the Change of Address in Search Console when moving subdomains to subfolders?
We have several subdomains for various markets for our business. We are in the process of moving those subdomains to subfolders on the main site. Example: boston.example.com will become example.com/boston And seattle.example.com will become example.com/seattle and so on. It's not truly a change of address, but should I use the change of address tool in GSC for all of these subdomains moving?

Domain Change Before or After Site Revamp?
In the last year traffic to our site has dropped in half and ranking has dropped significantly. Very little no content has been added in that time. We would now like to improve ranking by adding new content. 2 domains effectively exist for the site. The existing domain is www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. But www.metro-manhattan.com redirects to www.nyc-officespace-leader.com. Our company is Metro Manhattan Office Space, Inc.. We registered www.metro-manhattan.com and created the redirect to www.nyc-officespace-leader.com in 2012. www.nyc-officespace-leader.com was registered in 2006. Many links to the site show www.metro-manhattan.com and I believe this may be a source of confusion for Google. Would it be best to make the domain consistent at this time by redirecting it once and for all and to do so before adding new content? If this is done correctly can we avoid taking a hit on ranking? Note: -www.nyc-officespace-leader.com is the old domain.

-www.metro-manhattan is the new domain but has existed since 2012 and has been redirecting to the old domain since then
-The company name is Metro Manhattan Office Space (similar in branding to the new domain) Am I correct in assuming that having the 2 domains may be causing issues with Google involving domain authority? Change the domain before adding content or add content before?0 -
How do I best handle a minor URL change?
My company is about to complete an upgrade to our website but part of this will be changing the URLs slightly. Mainly the .aspx suffix will be dropped off the pages that we're most worried about. The current URLs will automatically redirect to the new pages, will this be enough or will there be an SEO impact? If it helps the site is www.duracard.com and the product pages are the ones we want to keep ranked. For instance if someone searches for "plastic gift cards" our page '<cite>https://www.duracard.com/products/plastic-gift-cards.aspx</cite>' is #3 and we want to make sure it stays that way once we change it to 'https://www.duracard.com/products/plastic-gift-cards'. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Easy way to change wordpress category titles. Currently categories are appearing with the same title?!
I'm working on a wordpress adult dating review site and have started to set up categories for each of my main keywords. I have also started to add sub categories by county and town and so far have done so for the counties of 'Lincolnshire' and 'Derbyshire'. The problem is though that for each of my subcategories the page titles are appearing the same. For example: www.mysite.com/category/online-dating/lincolnshire/spalding (root category online dating) shows the title as 'Spalding'. www.mysite.com/category/adult-dating/lincolnshire/spalding also has the title 'Spalding' even though it's root category is different (adult dating). It's probably easier to go to http://www.top-10-dating-reviews.com to see how it's set up. If you click in the category text in the top menu and navigate to dating/derbyshire/alfreton for example and then adult dating/derbyshire/alfreton you'll notice the page titles are the same. I use all in one SEO pack and have rewrite titles checked with category titles set to %category_title% | %blog_title%. I also use category SEO updater. In order to prevent duplicate content issues how can I simply make the title of each category category root title/category subtitle(county)/category subtitle 2(town). The title of each category page would then read for example Online Dating Lincolnshire Spalding.

Making sense of MLB.com domain structure
Although the subject of subdomains has been discussed quite often on these boards, I never found a clear answer to something I am pondering. I am about to launch a network of 8 to 10 related sites - all sharing a the same concept, layout, etc. but each site possessing unique content. My concept will be somewhat similar to how MLB.com (Major League Baseball) is set up. Each of the 30 teams in the league has it's unique content as a subdomain. My goal in the initial research was to try to find the answer to this question - **"Do the subdomains of a network contribute any increased value to the Root Domain? ** As I was trying to find the answer to my question and analyzing how MLB.com did it, I began to notice some structure that made very little sense to me and am hoping an expert can explain why they are doing it the way they are. Let me try to illustrate: Root Domain = http://mlb.com (actually redirects to: http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp) This root domain serves universal content that appeals to all fans of the league and also as a portal to the other subdomains from the main navigation. SubDomain Example = http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp **Already there are a couple of questions. ** 1. Why does MLB.com redirect to http://mlb.mlb.com/index.jsp ? - why the mlb subdomain? 2. - Why two subdomains for tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp.? Why not just make the subdomain "tampabayrays", "newyorkmets", "newyorkyankees" etc. **Here is where things get a little more complicated and confusing for me. **

From the home page, if I click on an article about the San Francisco Giants, I was half expecting to be led to content hosted from the http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb subdomain but instead the URL was: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb I can understand the breakdown of this URL
YMD = Year, Month, Date
Content ID = Identifying the content
VKey = news_MLB (clicked from the "news section found from the mlb subdomain.
c_id=mlb (?) Now, if I go to the San Francisco Giants page, I see a link to the same exact article but the URL is this: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_sf&c_id=sf It get's even stranger...when I went to the Chicago Cubs subdomain, the URL to the same exact article does not even link to the general mlb.mlb.com content, instead the URL looks like this: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb When I looked at the header from the http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com ULR, I could see the OG:URL as: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20121030&content_id=40129938&vkey=news_sf&c_id=sf but I did not see anything relating to rel=canonical I am sure there is a logical answer to this as the content management for a site like MLB.COM must be a real challenge. However, it seems that they would have some major issues with duplicate content. So aside from MLB's complex structure...I am also still searching for the answer to my initial question which is - **"Do the subdomains of a network contribute any increased value to the Root Domain?" For example, does http://tampabay.rays.mlb.com/index.jsp bring value to http://mlb.com? And what if the subdomain is marketed as http://raysbaseball.com and then redirected to the subdomain? Thanks in advance. **0 -

Would it be ok if my ccTLD (.au) has links pointing to my .com (main) site?
The main pages of my .au site are all in .au, but once you go to the inner pages, the users will be directed to my .com site. The .com will act as the content for the top pages of the .au. Would that be ok?
