HOW!??! Homepage Ranking Dropped Completely out of Top 100 on Google....
-
So I'm competing for a very competitive keyword, and I've been on the bottom of page 2 for a while now, ranking for my homepage, which is very content rich and has GREAT links pointing to it.
Out of nowhere, last week I dropped completely out of the top 100 or so, yet one of my article posts now ranks on page 6 or so for the same keyword.
I have great authoritative links, my on-page is spot on, all of my articles are super super high quality, I don't understand how my homepage, which has ranked for the main keyword for months on page 2, can just completely drop out of the top 100 or so....
Can anyone help provide some insight?

This is normal. First you need to evaluate this guide: http://www.elite-strategies.com/flavors-types-google-penalties/ and see what kind of penalty you have. Then you need to get all data from Analytics, Search Console both Links and Analytics there.
And here is huge analysis...
- You need to check timeframe of your sudden drop. Are there some turbulence in SERP? New algo released? Anything weird in your own castle (server, CMS, hosting provider, etc)? If there is something - fix it. Also read about algos/turbulences in industry news sites.
- Check for messages in SearchConsole about "Manual Actions" and fix them if it's any.
- Check for sudden change of your links and create linking profile. If there are new and weird links from spammy sources - disavow them ASAP. If there is overoptimization for keywords - change anchor or disavow. This can be something Penguin algo related.
- Check for sudden change of your site - thin content, aggregated content, duplicate, irrevelant, etc. Check also user signals - low CTR, high bounce rate, low time on site and low % of returning users. Also check bad UI - design, navigation, mobile redirects, site speed, ads. Check for low trustworthiness - in Google Raters Handbook that was recently released. This can be - providing contact information, ToS, PP, etc. And last - overoptimization. This can be something to Panda algo related.
- Check for other algorithms - like TopHeavy aka Page Layout Algorithms that may affect your site.
So after you know what can be your drop related then check and recheck. Isn't first nor last time when you can think about Panda but in reality was Penguin or vice versa. This can save you few months. After you're 100% sure what was then try to make changes to escape from algo penalty.
Same happens to me almost year and half. We're running brand new site and faced sandbox algo. But we make few links more than we should and from low quality sites. So site was shown in SERP for month in first or second page and then suddenly drop to 10 page. Our organic traffic was fell to 1/10 of before almost overnight. But we make new traffic sources - social media and referral traffic so we could live without organic. We change links, make diversify linking profile changing links, anchors or even both. We also delete some links. But nothing happen in SERP position. Then i use disavow tool and 2 weeks ago there was algo refresh (Penguin). Almost overnight search traffic jump more than 10x and recovering previous positions and getting new and ever better positions. Today - this site make traffic as 10x than after recovering.
The problem is that you need to make changes in site against penalty. And wait for algo refresh. You also need huge patience because some drop can happen anytime, but for recovering you need algo refreshes. And refreshes take months or even years.

Should I Even Bother Trying To Recover This Site After Google Penguin?
Hello all, I would like to get your opinion on whether I should invest time and money to improve a website which was hit by Google Penguin in April 2014. (I know, April 2014 was nearly 2 years ago. However, this site has not been a top priority for us and we have just left until now). The site is www.salmonrecipes.net Basically, we aggregated over 700 salmon recipes from major supermarkets, famous chefs, and others (all with their permission) and made them available on this site. It was a good site at the time but it is showing its age now. For a few years we were occasionally #1 on Google in the US for "salmon recipes", but normally we would be between #2 and #4. We made money from the site almost entirely through Adsense. We never made a huge amount, but it paid our office rent every month, which was handy. We also built up an email database of several thousand followers, but we've not really used this much. (Yet). In the year from 25th April 2011 to 24th April 2012 the site attracted just over 500k visits. After the rankings dropped due to Google Penguin, traffic dropped by 77% in the year from 25th April 2011 to 24th April 2012. Rankings and traffic have not recovered at all, and are only getting worse. I am happy to accept that we deserved our rankings to fall during the Google Penguin re-shuffle. I stupidly commissioned an offshore company to build lots of links which, in hindsight, were basically just spam, and totally without any real value. However they assured me it was safe and I trusted them, despite my own nagging reservations. Anyway, I have full details of all the links they created, and therefore I could remove many of these 'relatively' easily. (Of course, removing hundreds of links would take a lot of time). My questions ... 1. How can I evaluate the probability of this site 'recovering' from Google Penguin. I am willing to invest time/money on link removal and new (ethical) SEO work if there is a reasonable chance of regaining a position in the top 5 on Google (US) for "salmon recipes" and various long-tail terms. But I am keen to avoid spending time/money on this if it is unlikely we will recover. How can I figure out my chances? 2. Generally, I accept that this model of site is in decline. Relying on Google to drive traffic to a site, and on Google to produce revenue via its Adsense scheme, is risky and not entirely sensible. Also, Google seems to provide more and more 'answers' itself, rather than sending people to e.g. a website listing recipes. Given this, is it worth investing any money in this at all? 3. Can you recommend anyone who specialises in this kind of recovery work. (As I said, I have a comprehensive list of all the links that were built, etc). OK, that is all for now. I am really looking forward to whatever opinions you may have about this. I'll provide more info if required. Huge thanks

How do I write tags on a youtube video for a local Google search?
I've been reading into tags, and I would like to know what the best ways to do them for a local search are. Right now I have a title that reads similar to, "Keyword1 and Keyword2 in City X" Would I make a corresponding tag that reads "Keyword 1 and Keyword 2 in City X,"? Or would I do "Keyword 1," "Keyword 2," and, "City X," as separate tags? Thanks!

Does Google+ make a huge difference?
I run a website that's been ranked well for good keywords related to our business for some time. It was founded back in 2007 and has been there a while. Recently a new site has popped up that ranks brilliantly for everything. It's a new site, and the only redeeming factor I can see is that it has an AddThis box showing the Facebook Likes and Google Plus Ones, and they are around 400 Facebook Likes and 80 Google+ (for every page that ranks). Any other pages on their site which doesn't have any Facebook likes or Google Plus Ones, they don't rank. Our site doesn't have any likes or pluses. Is this making the difference? I stress that other than this our sites are very similar, other than the fact we've been around over 5 years.

Why did Google reject us from Google News?
I submitted our site, http://www.styleblueprint.com to Google to pontentially be a local news source in Nashville. I received the following note back: We reviewed your site and are unable to include it in Google News at this

time. We have certain guidelines in place regarding the quality of sites
which are included in the Google News index. Please feel free to review
these guidelines at the following link: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35769#3 Clicking the link, it anchors to the section that says: These quality guidelines cover the most common forms of deceptive or manipulative behavior, but Google may respond negatively to other misleading practices not listed here (e.g. tricking users by registering misspellings of well-known websites). It's not safe to assume that just because a specific deceptive technique isn't included on this page, Google approves of it. Webmasters who spend their energies upholding the spirit of the basic principles will provide a much better user experience and subsequently enjoy better ranking than those who spend their time looking for loopholes they can exploit. etc... Now we have never intentionally tried to do anything deceptive for our rankings. I am new to SEOmoz and new to SEO optimization in general. I am working through the errors report on our campaign site but I cannot tell what they are dinging us for. Whatever it is we will be happy to fix it. All thoughts greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jay0 -
