SEO impact of redirecting high ranking mirror site to the main website
-
During SEO audit for a client I noticed that they had over a dozen duplicate websites that are carbon copies of the main website. This was done via CMS platform and DNS. One of the mirror sites has about 400 indexed pages and has Moz DA of 42 and 137k External Equity-Passing Links. Full metrics comparison is attached.
I originally planned on doing rel="canonical" on the mirror site but the CMS vendor never even heard of it and is refusing to implement it in the header. My only other option is doing one to one 301 redirects.
Since the mirror site ranks well, even competes with main domain for some positions on the 1st page of SERP, what will be the impact after the redirects? Is doing 301's still the best option?
Thanks!

Thanks. I will just go with 301 and see how it turns out.

If you want to know how much traffic this domain is getting you could easily put a filter in Analytics which allows you to see the domain name when checking the pageviews.
Create a new view in Analytics and apply a filter with following settings:
Filter Type: Custom
Select: Advanced
Field A -> Extract A: Select: Hostname value: (.)
Field B -> Extract B: Select: Request URI value: (.)
Output To -> Constructor Select: Request URI value: /$A1$B1
Mark Field A: required & Mark "Override Output FieldYou could also combine all the different copies in one set in the Search Console - which would make it easier to check if there is an impact when activating the 301's.
Regardless of the traffic, the 301 remains the best option - some people say it does dilute pagerank - Google says it doesn't
As both Search Console & Analytics are not retroactive you could already make them active, wait a few weeks in order to collect sufficient data and then activate the redirects.

Thanks for responding.
I am hesitant to go with 301s because not all link juice will be passed or I am wrong about that? I can't even gauge the impact this could have on traffic since the main domain and the mirrored site had the same GA tracking on them. All traffic channel data is a mess. Since mirrored website's DA is in the 40's and it is ranking on page one in SERP for a number of major keywords I assume it is getting decent traffic.
P.S.
I have already verified the mirrored domains in GSC and just waiting to pull the trigger on the 301s before informing G about the move.

You don't seem to have much options if canonicals are not possible.
To be honest - in cases like this I wouldn't use canonicals but always go for 301 redirects. They are pretty easy to implement (2 lines of code in htacess) and they are directives Google has to follow (and will pass pagerank). Canonicals are mere requests to Google that it can but is not obliged to respect.
Would also indicate in the Search Console of the duplicates that you're moving them to the main domain (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/83106?hl=en) - you need to validate the duplicate domains before implementing the redirects.

Best SEO for New Lead Gen Site: Use Corporate Domain or Product Name?
Hello, wanted to poll the Moz community about a URL discussion my company is having. We plan to launch a new publicly-facing resource and want to leverage organic search as much as possible. For the domain, we’re considering these options: the corporate domain since it’s well established or the URL for the product, which is more descriptive of the content that will reside on the page, but doesn’t have much authority because almost all of the relevant content is behind a paywall. The product domain is appealing because we want to build brand recognition. Should we also look at a more specific domain for the topic that doesn’t leverage either branded domain? Any Moz tools you’d recommend to help research this decision? Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

Affordable SEO?
Hey,
Moz Pro | | ChrisHolgate
I love the resources available to me through Moz.com and although I've found it's possible to make a half decent attempt at improving our site using these tools. I have however got to the point where it would be nice to have a second opinion as my view on our site and what can be achieved is no doubt somewhat stale. Obviously asking the community through Q&A is a start and I have benefited greatly in the past from your advice but I wouldn't expect anybody to give our site more than a two minute glance for free. As such I'm hoping to locate someone that I can pay to talk things over with just to get some fresh ideas and perhaps a list of tasks that my staff and I can continue to undertake over the coming months. I appreciate that Moz has a list of recommended SEO companies however these all seem to be targeted towards larger brands and I can imagine a relationship with one of these companies being less personal than I would like. Asides from going through lists of users and checking out their profiles individually, is there a resource that lists the smaller independent on Moz.com and if so where can I find it? Alternatively are their any external resources that might help me to find someone that would be a good match?
Thanks for your help. Chris1 -

Keyword Difficulty Tool Ranking
I'm using the keyword difficultly tool to help me create a a list of 5 keywords (out of approx 50-60) to optimise pages for on a site. However I don't want to just choose the top 5 if 3 of them are too competitive and not worth targeting. From anyone's experience, for a small, new web company who has no pages optimised at this point, do you think there is a keyword difficulty score that I should create a hard limit on? So for instance, with a group of keywords, to only target keywords that have a difficulty score of 60 or below because anything higher would be too difficult to optimise the pages for in this stage of the sites development. Thanks in advance for your help Michelle 🙂

Old Incoming Links Redirected to new pages are not Being Factored on the Open Site Explorer
Hi, My website has been online since 1994. We have old links pointing to pages that no longer exist so what we have done is to create redirects to the specific page where the content is being displayed now. However, when we use the Open Site Explorer, the linking root domains do not show those sites that contain old links pointing to our domain. One good example of this one is: dmoz.org. Am I improperly handling the redirects? Or, what do I have to do so that old links that are being redirected to the new pages where the information is are accounted when calculating domain authority and trust? Thanks, Alex

Sudden drop in rankings
I've been working on a site since it launched in April and the rankings for all targeted keywords have been creeping up in that time. For example the site was position 5 for "satchel" and 6 for "satchels". I've just had the latest rankings report from SeoMoz and it is showing "not in top 50" for both keywords and big drops on most other keywords. What is the likely explanation for such a big drop? The website is Z atchels.com
