Tracking twitter traffic in Google Analytics
-
I would like to track twitter traffic to my account in GA. After going through the step in the help tutorial about how to do it, I managed to generate this url ( with the help of url builder )
http://twitter.com/UltraSEO?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social%2BMedia&utm_campaign=Ultraseo
Now what should i do next ? Please help. How can i track visits to my twitter profile ?
-
Yes you have understood it right, it seems. I would recommend googles own shortner though, since it will help google understand your tweet.
-
Let me be specific.
I want to track this url - http://www.ultraseo.com/how-to-get-web-site-traffic-from-facebook/
I generated the following URL using URL builder -
Should i now pass it through a URL shortener bitLy or googles own. and tweet it.
Is this what i should do ? Please reply ...
-
Both the urls u posted seem identical to me
- nope
2)since they are both just the original url, yes
3)both the parameters I wrote were examples. you could call the BigBearBunga or whatever you like. Call them whatever makes sence to you

René seems to have answered this pretty well, but help me understand something, Atul. You want to track traffic coming from Twitter to your website via only tweets you have sent out?
If that is the case, use a URL shortener like bit.ly as René recommends or use the URL builder to segment further. Using the URL builder is in my opinion though a lot of work for likely very little return. But, this at least will tell you how much traffic was generated due to your tweet regardless of whether someone clicked on your link on Twitter.com, in a Twitter app, via an RSS feed, or some other method/channel.
If you instead just want to track all traffic driven by Twitter to your website, why not simply segment out the traffic using something like a GA custom segment? It's not perfect, but it works...especially if you do not limit yourself to just Twitter and instead have a "social media" custom segment, a la http://www.seomoz.org/blog/segmenting-social-traffic-in-google-analytics

This is the URL i want to tweet - http://www.ultraseo.com/how-to-get-web-site-traffic-from-facebook/
Should the link be like this -
http://www.ultraseo.com/how-to-get-web-site-traffic-from-facebook/?medium=twitter&date=08043011
1 ) is it necessary to include http ( you have mentioned www )
2 ) any correction required in above url ?
3 ) is it necessary to include the date ?

The easy way for you to do it is like this:
The url you wan't to tweet: www.youdomain.com/yourart.html
Now you need to add some parameters to the end of the URL f.ex:
medium=twitter and date=08043011
so the url will look like this:
www.youdomain.com/yourart.html**?medium=twitter&date=08043011**
pass it through an URL shortener like bitLy or googles own. and tweet it.
In GA you should now be able to filter your search so you can check the traffick the tweet generated. Because you can track the URL and see how many came to your artcle by that URL. Next time you tweet someting just change the date and you can track that specific URL. same thing goes for facebook, email ex.
actualy theres a WAY easier way to do it:
grab your link pass it through biutLy. bitly will generate an URL for you. use this for the tweet. You can now track trafick (in bitly) from twitter, facebook exc.
Clearly the easiest way.. you don't even have to think

Thanks for your time and patience.
This is the twitter page of our company http://twitter.com/UltraSEO
I need to link to an article on our site and tweet the article on company's twitter page. The article in question is http://www.ultraseo.com/how-to-get-web-site-traffic-from-facebook/
what link should i tweet ? Should it be http://twitter.com/UltraSEO?utm_source=Twitter&utm_medium=Social%2Bmedia&utm_campaign=Ultraseo ( generated this using URL builder )
If you could make things a bit clear, i would very much appreciate it.

"I suppose this can be done in Traffic sources > All traffic sources. Am i right ?" sounds about right or in other words, yes
"I really, really would like to know what specific tweet traffic was generated."
each time you make a new tweet where you want to link to an article on your site, you should run through steps 1-7 and then use the link generated. If I were you though I would read som tutorial on URL's and query strings to get the know how behind what your doing. that way you won't be shooting in the dark and will be able to write those URL's by hand.
When doing SEO, SEM and SMM its a good idea to have a basic understanding in HTML/CSS and how URI/URL's work. And know Analytics/adwords tool set by heart.
To be a good SEO: you should be able to read and write HTML, CSS and Javascript + have a basic understanding of DNS records and domains.
To be a great SEO: You should be all of the above and be able to write some basic PHP/ASP/ASP.NET and have at least a basic understanding about servers.
Hope it helps. If there is something you need me to elaborate please tell me what and I'll try to do so

"If you don't care what tweet the visitor comes from then you can just see it in GA"
I suppose this can be done in Traffic sources > All traffic sources. Am i right ?
"You need to build a new url for each tweet" Please guide me on this. I am not that technical and relatively new to SEO Compared to you heavyweights. That's why you often see silly questions from me ...
I really, really would like to know what specific tweet traffic was generated.
Will be back in about 45 minutes. Its lunch time in my office...

If you don't care what tweet the visitor comes from then you can just see it in GA. But if you want to know what specific tweet traffic was generated by, the yes, you need to do something like what the article stated.
You need to build a new url for each tweet or you won't be able to track the specific tweet.
I hope it made sense else ask me to clarify and I'll do so

You mean to say Traffic sources > All traffic sources report in GA will show no. of visits to my Twitter profile.
Actually, i read this at http://www.ehow.com/how_8547532_track-twitter-data-analytics.html
I wanted to know what to do in step 7 ?
-
you could use an url shorten-er like bit.ly but GA can tell you this whitout the use of all that, so why not just check the trafic sources in GA?

My traffic keeps going down...
My website been through many changes the last 5 months. From migrating http to https, server transfer and more. Everything was double checked all the redirects are perfect (301) to the https pages (we have like 28K backlinks so everything needs to be correct), in a matter of fact the migration to ssl made in October and in November the stats went high. The problem is that at the end of November after the server migration the traffic went down and is stably down till today. We re-checked the redirects in every aspect and more in depth and finished fixing issues around end of January. Also before 1 week we stopped the functionality of a parameter (product sort) and removed it from the website entirelly and canonicaled the urls that were using it so if google tries to test those urls with the parameter to see a canonical tag and eventually drop them out of index and stop crawling them. Generally we tried to fix the crawling efficiency and speed. The technical SEO was on fire the last weeks. Still i cant see improvement in rankings, i only see drops. What is the problem here? Where should i look? Any ideas? In webmaster tools we have no 404's and no manual actions. The visibility in Sistrix goes down (check attachment), the ahrefs organic traffic goes down, semrush stats go down... My website is: https://www.pccdkeys.com ecfp87

Google Analytics and Adwords Linkup
I'm in the middle of a log jam with linking google analytics to google adwords. I have a client whose account lists properties for five distinct websites. Company A www.website1.com/

www.website2.com/
www.website3.com/ There are individual adwords accounts for each property that I'm trying to link up. Here's the issue I"m having. I can link up Website1.com Analytics to Website1.com Adwords. Then I'll link up Website2.com Analyitics to Website2.com Adwords. This will cause Website1.com to be linked up to Website2.com's Adwords. How do I fix this?0 -
Why has Google stopped indexing my content?
Mystery of the day! Back on December 28th, there was a 404 on the sitemap for my website. This lasted 2 days before I noticed and fixed. Since then, Google has not indexed my content. However, the majority of content prior to that date still shows up in the index. The website is http://www.indieshuffle.com/. Clues: Google reports no current issues in Webmaster tools Two reconsideration requests have returned "no manual action taken" When new posts are detected as "submitted" in the sitemap, they take 2-3 days to "index" Once "indexed," they cannot be found in search results unless I include url:indieshuffle.com The sitelinks that used to pop up under a basic search for "Indie Shuffle" are now gone I am using Yoast's SEO tool for Wordpress (and have been for years) Before December 28th, I was doing 90k impressions / 4.5k clicks After December 28th, I'm now doing 8k impressions / 1.3k clicks Ultimately, I'm at a loss for a possible explanation. Running an SEOMoz audit comes up with warnings about rel=canonical and a few broken links (which I've fixed in reaction to the report). I know these things often correct themselves, but two months have passed now, and it continues to get progressively worse. Thanks, Jason

How to block google robots from a subdomain
I have a subdomain that lets me preview the changes I put on my site. The live site URL is www.site.com, working preview version is www.site.edit.com The contents on both are almost identical I want to block the preview version (www.site.edit.com) from Google Robots, so that they don't penalize me for duplicated content. Is it the right way to do it: User-Agent: * Disallow: .edit.com/*

Google SERPs and NoIndex directives.
We have pages that have been added to robots.txt as url patterns in DisAllow. Also, we have the meta noindex tags on the pages themselves. But we are finding the pages in index. I don't think they are higher up in the rankings and they don't have any descriptions, any previews or any cached pages. Why does Google show these pages? Could it be due to internal or external linking?

Value of Twitter Links
Let's ignore the "social metric" value of Twitter links and mentions and look at it from the pure link juice point of view. Twitter accounts such as http://twitter.com/randfish used to have their own PageRank and were treated as separate URLs. Twitter changed that to http://twitter.com/#!/randfish consolidating all their content to a single URL. When I search for "randfish" in Google, however, the result is the first URL version. Some clarification on this matter would be much appreciated.
