How to Rank in Yelp
-
Hello everyone!
I manage SEO for a pretty large brand that has close to 100 office locations nationwide. In the last year we have completely revamped our Yelp pages. This has been a great secondary source of traffic and conversions for us because of the type of industry we are in. The problem is, it can be exponentially better if we were more visible.
We have done almost everything we can to make our pages as good if not better than almost any competitor regardless of geographic location. We even have the enhanced profiles (extortion) that remove competitors ads from appearing on our listings.
Here is what we have done in the last year to each listing:
- Uploaded tons of photos
- Increased reviews
- Added proper categories
- Fine-tuned all of our CTAs
- Added in a unique and optimized business description ( Available with enhanced profiles)
- Set the proper service area range on their map
- Increased our review response rate ( both negative and positive) to 100%
Still, even after months and months have gone by we struggle to rank on the first page for our service category. Doing manual searches often turn up competitors, who do not even have their listing claimed, have no photos, little reviews will rank higher than us.
Even though we have an account rep because of our business size, bringing this issue up to them is about as useful as talking to a blanket. They push CPC so hard that its the last thing they are willing to help with. It has gotten to the point where I am honestly starting to believe in a self-curated conspiracy theory that they purposely hold larger brands back in organic to sell CPC harder. Obviously certain brands that hold the branding clout like a "Best Buy" would be hard to get away with. But still, we do all the right things and we are getting very minimal results compared to where we should be.
Has anyone else had issues with Yelp or have any ideas on some steps we could take to appease their particular algorithm?
Thanks!
-Ben

I know, funny video, right? So glad if it gave you some tips, Ben!

Thanks so much for the video, that was really helpful! I probably looked at the guy actually talking about three times during the entire duration. I just stared at the burger eating machine on his journey to the meat sweats. My favorite part was the first scene that cuts to him laying flat on the back on the seat and grabbing at napkins.
Thanks so much everyone for all your help!!!!

I know! That cracked me up too - quite oddball! It certainly made me remember the video. Glad to know it may have given you a couple of ideas, Cesare.
-
Hi Miriam,
Very good video with even further things to look into.
By the way I liked the guy on the other side of the table that is contributing to the video by basically saying absolutely nothing but eating hamburgers and lying on the bench...LOL...

Hey DaveyTree,
Some nice responses here from Cesare! I'm enjoying reading the discussion you two are having.
I agree with Cesare that it sounds like you're going above and beyond many companies in regards to your Yelp efforts, and yep, I've encountered other business owners expressing frustrations similar to yours. While it sounds like you've gained very advanced knowledge of Yelp in your efforts to promote your business, take a minute to watch this video from 2016:
http://localu.org/blog/guest-video-top-10-yelp-tips-small-business-2016/
It taught me some things I didn't know about Yelp when I first watched it, and maybe you'll get some new ideas, too.

Hi Ben,
You are welcome. Its also interesting for me to digg deeper into the Yelp-SEO...
Right the centroid thing (is Google not relying on distance right now and not using the centroid anymore?) could be a trigger too. Try to check that out systematically, maybe you can exclude it then as the source of the above situation.
If you liked my answers you can also mark one as a good response.
Cheers,
Cesare

Hi Cesare,
This is an excellent outlook, I really appreciate it. These are things we are wondering as well. It may be as simple as the bad listings that are ranking high are just so close to the centroid or user search that are being populated based on convenience, much like Google, which is understandable but annoying. Just because something is closer does not mean it is a good choice. I avoid the close gas station near my work that is in the bad neighborhood all the time.
Another thing we are looking at as a possibility is citation issues, especially with Acxiom. Like you said, we do not believe their algorithm is that advanced so we are looking off-page as well and if Yelp relies heavily on third-party data to rank which we (my team) doesn't know, this may be a place to start and track any results.
Thanks again!

Hi Ben,
Honestly I think you are doing more than most business' do on Yelp actually. And also the right things. My 2nd suggestion is something extremely marginal I thought of that can give you an advantage if everything else is done and the competition is top too.
But this doesn't seem to be the main problem in your situation.
It seems you did your "on-page" homework on Yelp already rather well. So the reason must lie somewhere else.
Right now these are my thoughts:
-
Yelp takes also into account behavioural KPI's like CTR, dwell time, etc. on the business page. Are they really so advanced? Are your competitions business pages that are 1/2 empty, with no reviews generating a better CTR, etc.: don't think so...Is there something on your pages that is negatively affecting the above KPI's, that turns off visitors?: maybe.
-
Some algorithmic thing (disadvantage) from Yelp: because of your size? looks spammy? "duplicates" in different locations are normal when you have different branches. because they want to force you to CPC? hope really not: that would be very short sighted saying the least...looks over optimized? maybe yes to some extent (text/keyword-wise). on the other hand they actually want you to fill in everything and use all their features... maybe something happens here by mistake due to the poor implementation of their algorithm: rather unlikely, one should first try to look for the errors with himself and not with the others...lol
my guess (not having seen your pages) right now is some kind over optimization...
Just some other thoughts that may help you in your quest.
Cheers,
Cesare

Thanks Cesare,
Good call on the specialty pages. We did hit those with all of our services and keywords. As far as the reviews go with our targeted keywords, I will for sure go and test to see if some of our better offices have reviews that include our targeted keywords to see if that is what is really moving the needle. it is just mind-boggling some of the results that come up ahead of us that have no reviews period or even a photo!
Thanks so much!

Hi Ben,
Very interesting indeed.
We do almost nothing, i.e. only the absolut minimum for our yelp pages and rank for the relevant keywords for all of them on the 1st position. But unfortunately Yelp is of very little use over here for the industry we are in...so I don't care so much..
Independently from that I have 2 points you didn't mention explicitly above but you might already have taken care about:
- Fill out the speciality pages and add the relevant keyword(s) there
- Make your customers write reviews containing your relevant keywords (they are highlited and appear on search results as well)
Hope this gives you additional inspirations...
Cheers,
Cesare

Accurate Rank Checking for Local SEO
Hi all, I am wondering if anyone out there has cracked the enigma of figuring out how to accurately find local rankings for multi-location businesses. I do understand that "accuracy" should be used loosely given the numerous factors that come into play for local such as distance from searcher and business location being located directly in the city of the search. So I definitely get that nothing will be entirely accurate but the programs I have used and the incognito browser approach just seems so far off. Moz tells me something different than the Google Adword Preview Tool which is different than SEMRush which is different than serps.com and so on. I have done the appending to search strings with near=city as well. I unfortunately do not trust any of them at this point. I would LOVE if my company flew me out to every single city we are in so I could do local searches but that is probably not going to happen 🙂 Any thoughts or recommendations for how I can get the most accurate local rank, even if it is an incredibly manual process? Is there an easy way for me to change my location anymore since Google stripped that option away awhile back? That was the ONLY time I felt I was getting somewhat accurate results. Thanks! -Ben

Our website ranks first in SERP but is not listed in google local list
Hi, Our website is currently (and has been) ranking 1st for a number of keywords but is not listed under the Google Local list. I have double check that all the (physical) info is correct. I do not have a duplicate page. When I order the Google Local results in rating order, we then appear on top! Has anyone come across such a situation and would you have tips on how to solve this issue? Thanks!

Local Ranking Factors?
For Google, has anyone got a finger on how much of a factor the address type "service customers only at their location" versus "service customers at my business location AND customers location is" is as far as local search ranking especially for 3-pack results? (The former they hide the address the latter they show the street address) It seems to me the primary factors are obviously (a) proximity of user's location or location intent to the business location, then (b) natural organic ranking (age of business, domain authority, inbound links, quality content, relevance to the actual keywords searched for). But where does the address type rank amongst all the "secondary factors" like is business currently open, number of reviews and average rating, etc. etc. My guess would be reviews and average rating along with is business currently open would be third, and then address type would factor in - but for all I know the address type could be given much more importance than I am guessing?

Local Search and Schema.org - Do I need to tag up the "same as" Property to all my citations to help with local rankings?
Hi All, We have implemented Schema.og on our website and this also includes the local business schema for all of our branches. However I've read an article (see below ) which says we should also be doing "same as " property and linking this to ALL of our citations such as google plus page , yelp , bing places, city search etc etc as this will help with citations. I am wondering if anyone has done this ? - And if so , has this helped with local rankings etc - I don't really want to invest the extra costs to get this done if I can't find anywhere that says its made a difference - The article from whitespark - says - "when you create new citations for your business (or for your client’s), it’s a waiting game hoping that Google and the other search engines will find your new citations quickly and make the connection between those listings, the business, and the website. The “sameAs” property can help make that process much quicker _and _easier. Schema.org explains that the “sameAs” property is used along with the “URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's [or business’] identity.” By using the “sameAs” property in your NAP schema markup, you can tell search engines that the business you’ve marked up is the same one found at a certain citation URL Of course, Google+ isn’t the only important citation source. There’s also Bing Places, Facebook, Yelp, Citysearch and a few others. The nice thing about many schema.org properties is that you can use them multiple times in your markup." I am wondering what peoples thoughts were and whether they has implemented this and if so , did it help ? thanks Pete | [sameAs](http://schema.org/sameAs) | URL | URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity. SEO issues with Physician and Practice not ranking for their own names
I've inherited an SEO client who's got all kinds of ranking problems. Currently his name Dr. Laddis shows up for his old practice, Saratoga Cardiology Associates (http://saratogacardiology.com/) instead of his current one Cardiology Specialty Services (http://cardiologyspecialtyservices.org/ ) He's also showing up with a G+ for the old practice that's listed as closed. The 2nd listing is for his bio on the hospital page.(<cite class="_Rm">https://saratogahospital.org/doctor/theodoros-laddis-md-facc/ )</cite> Then come the usual Dr directories. His YouTube channel shows up. But his actual website isn't until the middle of the 2nd page. I'm also having similar issues getting the practice to show up in search (http://cardiologyspecialtyservices.org/ ). As I was coming on board, they also had a name change from Saratoga Cardiology Specialty Services to Cardiology Specialty Services. Their G+ local business page has the custom URL for Saratoga Cardiology Specialty Services but the name on the page is Cardiology Specialty Services. Their website is actually part of the hospital multisite with a URL redirect. While the site shows up for "cardiologist Saratoga" their G+ page doesn't show up.(https://plus.google.com/+Saratogacardiologyspecialtyservices/about ). I've also done on-page SEO and am still in the process of submitting to directories. Any thoughts on what the hangup is or what I can do to clear up this mess would be appreciated.

Hi,

I have several clients who run firms out of their homes but they want to promote on yelp. Does yelp allow someone to hide their address but to still come up in search results for a city? If so, how do I do this? Cornelius0 -
Completely lost Google Local rankings for main keywords
Hi there, Our website, petmedicalcenter.com, used to rank very well in Google in the local section - usually within the top 3 spots for 8 or so keywords. Then last fall our rankings started to diminish. We would rank really well for a few days and then would be no where to be found in the local section - this cycle kept going for a few months. Now, within the last few weeks our website is nowhere to be found in local for our usual keywords. After a few years of success with SEO, I know the landscape is really starting to change. My problem is that I don't even know where to start to try and get us back on to the top spots. I know this question is rather broad, but I am really at a loss here. Any help is greatly appreciated!! http://www.petmedicalcenter.com Main Keywords: veterinarian las vegas, vets in las vegas, veterinarians las vegas, las vegas veterinarians, vet las vegas Thank you for your help!
