How do I complete a reverse DNS check when completing log file analysis?
-
I'm doing some log file analysis and need to run a reverse DNS check to ensure that I'm analysing logs from Google and not any imposters. Is there a command I can use in terminal to do this?
If not, whats the best way to verify Googlebot?
Thanks

That's awesome! Glad to know there's a bulk tool out there!

Hi Tyler,
Thanks for your reply. I managed to get down to 98 unique IPs and ran a bulk reverse DNS/IP Look-up using this tool:
https://www.infobyip.com/ipbulklookup.php
Thanks for your help though!

Hey Daniel,
If you want to verify that a user-agent is actually Googlebot, you'll want to use a log file analysis tool to aggregate all of the IP addresses associated with Googlebot. Once you have a list of IP addresses, you can perform a reverse DNS lookup to verify whether the IP addresses are actually associated with Googlebot or not.
If you're on windows/pc these steps should work:
https://www.serverintellect.com/support/dns/reverse-dns/If you're on mac try these steps:
1. open Terminal
2. type "host" + ip address
for example: "host 66.249.66.1"
3. hit enter
4. view results. For example: "1.66.249.66.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer crawl-66-249-66-1.googlebot.com"If the results are from Google.com or Googlebot.com, you can be sure it's actually Google crawling your site. Unfortunately, I don't know of any faster ways to achieve these results. I'm sure there's a tool out there, I just haven't found it yet.

Good luck!

Rel: Canonical - checking advice provided by SEO agency
Hey all, We have two brands one bigger and one smaller that are on 2 different domains. We are wanting to repost some of the articles from the smaller brand to the bigger brand and what was a bit of curve ball, our SEO agency advised us NOT to put a rel: canonical on the reposted articles on the bigger brands site. This is counter to what i'm used to and just wanted to confirm with the gurus out there if this is good advice or bad advice. Thanks 🙂

Reverse proxy a successful blog from subdomain to subfolder?
I have an ecommerce site that we'll call confusedseo.com. I created a WordPress blog and CNAME'd it to blog.confusedseo.com. Since then, the blog has earned a PageRank of 3 and a decent amount of organic traffic. I am considering a reverse proxy to forward blog.confusedseo.com to confusedseo.com/blog/. As I understand it, this will greatly help the "link juice" of the root domain. However, I'm concerned about any potential harm done to the existing SEO value of the blog. What, if anything, should I be doing to ensure that the reverse proxy doesn't hurt my "juice" rather than help it?

Crawl completed but still says meta description missing
Before the last crawl I went through and made sure all meta descriptions were not missing. However, from the last crawl on the 26th July, it still has the same pages on the list and showed they were crawled as well? Any ideas on why they may still be showing as missing?

Why are my URL's with a trailing slash still getting indexed even though they are redirected in the .htaccess file?
My .htaccess file is set up to redirect a URL with a trailing / to the URL without the /. However, my SEOmoz crawl diagnostics report is showing both URL's. I took a look at my Google Webmaster account and saw some duplicate META title issues. Same thing, Google Webmaster is showing the URL with the trailing /. My website was live for about 3 days before I added the code to the .htaccess file to remove the trailing /. Is it possible that in those 3 days that both versions were indexed and haven't been removed even though the .htaccess file has been updated?

Best on-line tool for checking indexed pages (or just for a Mac)
Hey guys, I'm on a Mac and that's why I can't use the usual PC software for checking if my links have been indexed. Here's the deal. I ordered some guest posts. The guest poster did it for me and put my back links. Now, I want to quickly check which pages (with my backlinks) have been indexed. I have a lot of guest posts. So, I need something that can check if those pages have been indexed by Google. I need an online tool or something that will work for my Mac. Help. 🙂

Should I add my blog posts to my sitemap.txt file?
This seems like it should be an obvious no, just because of the amount of work that would entail, and then remembering to do it every time I make a post, but since I couldn't find anything on Google about it and have never heard anyone mention it, I figured I'd ask.

Internal file extension canonicalization
Ok no doubt this is straightforward, however seem to be finding to hard to find a simple answer; our websites' internal pages have the extension .html. Trying to the navigate to that internal url without the .html extension results in a 404. The question is; should a 401 be used to direct to the extension-less url to future proof? and should internal links direct to the extension-less url for the same reason? Hopefully that makes sense and apologies for what I believe is a straightforward answer;

Is it ok if a company address is located in the footer which is in a external php file?
We all know that a company's address must be in the footer on every single page. But what if that actual address resides inside an external php file. Meaning the entire footer is an external php file. Will that affect local seo negatively? thanks for your help.
