Why does the order of the keywords affect my SERP? And what can I do to improve?
-
Hi all,
So, if you google "london life coach" my site appears #2 (www.nickhatter.com)
But if you google "life coach London" my SERP seems to fluctuate between #3 up to #6.
If you google "life coach in London" my SERP is a solid #2/3.
I don't get it all. Would someone care to explain?
Also, if you have any tips on how I might improve the EAT of my website please do feel free to weigh in!
Many thanks,
Nick -
The answer Google would like you to believe is that it's possible for the word ordering to imply different intents. In reality though, I think it's mainly an artefact of them not fully understanding meaning, or not being able to classify all pages and keywords perfectly.
My colleague Sam Nemzer wrote a post with research on this topic that you might find interesting.

I have the same going on with one particular keyword. The best way is to get a good link for that keyword thats having a lower or different ranking then the other keyword. Then it should be solved.

Nick,
It's kind of a head smacker when you think of it. It makes sense that the order of the words in the query would make a difference in ranking. Different orders may mean different things. Also, since google is trying to match the searcher's words to potential websites that satisfy the searcher's intent, the order of words on a website definitely a site's ranking for specific keywords. Those these may be only subtle differences between site's copy, but still, someone has to rank at the top for a particular order and someone still has to rank at the bottom for that same order. It's the algorithm.

Control Over SERPs
I launched a content branch of over 1200 guides for my company's website one year ago. This content branch now receives 180,000 visits per month. Unfortunately, my company has needed to cut back on several of the vertical services that it offers. As a result, many of the top article search results accounting for the majority of the traffic to this branch are now obsolete. Are there any feasible ways to shift the authority of these obsolete top rated pages (located in the top 20 results) to other articles that cover services that we still do offer? For reference, please see the attached image containing an overview of the top 20x results accounting for 40% of all traffic to this content branch. Green are still valid content and but all other colors are not. Does anyone have suggestions for moving more green articles up and into the top 20x results while pushing the other ones down without loosing out on overall site traffic? Appreciate any and all feedback! Thanks!!! 1qMyYEJ.jpg

Google drop down - keyword gone, why?
Hi guys, i received traffic off a yearly based term, this year for '2013' i noticed it is nowhere near what the yearly term was for the year before. I believe that Google has stopped the yearly term appearing in a drop-down menu from a big volume related term, my question is how do they determine what goes in the drop down menu for related/relevant searches?

Can I delay an AJAX call in order to hide specific on page content?
I am an SEO for a people search site. To avoid potential duplicate content issues for common people searches such as "John Smith" we are displaying the main "John Smith" result above the fold and add "other John Smith" search results inside an iframe. This way search engines don't see the same "other John Smith" search results on all other "John Smith" profile pages on our site and conclude that we have lots of duplicate content. We want to get away from using an iframe to solve potential duplicate content problem. Question: Can we display this duplicate "John Smith" content using a delayed AJAX call and robot.txt block the directory that contains the AJAX call?

How to improve Google Places Account
Hello, A friend of mine has a google places account. Her website is http://debidonner.com/ You can see her places account listed under "life coach scottsdale arizona" I've attached a screenshot of her categories. I just added "NLP Coach" and "Personal Coach" today, so results are only for the other categories. We're looking for ways to improve it. We've had 43 clicks for driving directions. 4 map clicks, and 0 website clicks (how good is that, by the way) Thanks! screenshot-google-places.jpg screenshot-google-places2.jpg

Does Blocking ICMP Requests Affect SEO?
All in the title really. One of our clients came up with errors with a server header check, so I pinged them and it times out. The hosting company have told them that it's because they're blocking ICMP requests and this doesn't affect SEO at all... but I know that sometimes pinging posts, etc... can be beneficial so is this correct? Thanks, Steve.
