Magento webshop ranks bad on Category pages
Hi All!
Our webshop is www.hond.nl. We operate it for about a year now and it is not ranking on our most important pages.
Basically we have 3 types of pages: Category pages, Product pages and 'Splash' pages. The 2nd and the 3rd rank OK. But the 1st, the category pages not at all. While the category pages have the best (hand written, unique) and the most content.
For example https://www.hond.nl/hondenvoer.html is not ranking on keyword 'hondenvoer' (position 140...)
We have investigated quite thoroughly and did most common (moz) tests and can't find a reason why the category pages don't rank. (could it have something to do with the filters...?)
If anybody can shed some light on it, we would be much obliged!
Thanks, Sander

Competitor analysis, why they rank so much better [ecommerce/Magento]
For a Dutch e-commerce website, we're having some issuse being found & ranked on important keywords. I have done a detailed view into the content & technical part (html) of our website and a competitor's site.
Our site is www.hond.nl (hond is the Dutcn noun dog, the best domain we could get)
Competitor: www.obobo.nl (no meaning at all)For searches for instance by dogfood (Dutch: "hondenvoer") we rank really bad while our competitor ranks really well. I've gone trouch the moz-tools intensively but can't figure out why. We got more content, more self-written texts, more incoming root-domain links etc.
Any ideas were we could get a solution?
Seems that our Splash pages are doing "ok" but especially Category pages are listing badly.

RE: 301 Directs
I think 404's should be 404's as if someone is linking to pages that don't exist, a 404 is the best response. Google and bots will see a 404 and remove that url.
301's are more useful when reorganizing a site and traffic (inbound links, search traffic) come in to old urls. To just redirect all 404s as a 301 us not usefull I would say.
