Then just wondering why MOZ is suggesting it?

In the SEO guide on Moz, it states as one of the link building strategies:

Get your customers to link to you

If you have partners you work with regularly, or loyal customers that love your brand, you can capitalize on this by sending out partnership badges—graphic icons that link back to your site (like Google often does with their AdWords certification program). Just as you'd get customers wearing your t-shirts or sporting your bumper stickers, links are the best way to accomplish the same feat on the web.

We design websites for churches and non-profits, and put a link back to our site as the designer. We recently have been told this is spammy and not a good idea. However, from what MOZ says, it sounds like they are promoting you do this.

Ok, that's good to know. I think for now, I"ll leave them alone, unless there's one that seems really irrelevant. Thanks to both of you for your help.

Thank you both for your responses. Our spam links are mainly ones back from our client's sites (which are churches/non-profits, so they seem relevant) or from blog posts I have commented on (also relevant to churches.) So, I"m not sure why they are considered spammy.

Question: Can you disavow individual links (and not the whole group of them?)

Thanks for your response. I checked our website spam score which is 0. So, do I really need to worry about the spam links? As I mentioned, they are between 1-4 flags, most under 4. Thanks again:-)

We have about 40, between 1-4 flags. Do you see this as a problem? We looked at the disavow feature, but it seems you need to be cautious about using it. Please advise. Thanks!

We have read through all these comments, but still not sure what to do about this. We do church web design, and our link would be on church websites. That seems relevant to me.

These responses go back to 2014. Is there any current advice or information on this topic?
