I have tried to implement this on my Grass Roots SEO site which seems to be working just by using the following code:
<a <span="">rel</a><a <span="">="author" href="</a>https://plus.google.com/107417726658928760708">+Martin Evans
My Google+ profile also shows my site as a site I contribute to.
