The URLs have been indexed by Google from an old site.
The new site is now a Wordpress site.
To tidy up what Google has indexed I want to redirect these /? URLs to the home page.
I have tried the "link juice keeper" plugin but that did not work.
I really need to know what code I need to put in the htaccess file to do this. i have tried a whole bunch of things but cant get it to work
I want to redirect all URLs that have /? in it.
Indexed in Google is a bunch of urls lik:
I want all these URLs to be redirected to my home page.
Any ideas?
I see what you mean. Well the links from the home page sites are going from sites that are for information purposes only, then link to the service provider recommended by that website.
I wouldn't see anything wrong with this. There are 5 sites linking from the home page to my main site out of 120 backlinks. I presume that this doesnt look bad in Google's eyes

Can you tell me why you think home page links are bad? I actually started a question about this last week but didnt get many replys. Do you think getting home page links a bad thing to do?
Ive done some digging and found that when I go to mysite1.com in majestic and look at Pages, its showing all the long URLs that I found pointing to mysite2.com
So I guess that at some point in its life, these pages have been indexed by Google.
These URLs all start with a ? i.e. mysite1.com/?561796
So I am guessing the best way to solve this is to make all URLs that start with a /? be redirected to the root.
Unfortunetly I have no idea how to write this in the htaccess file
Ok I have noticed that any URL with ? at the end shows the home page.
mysite1.com/? will show the home page
mysite1.com/?111 will show the home page
etc etc
So I guess I need to redirect anything with a ? to the home page using a 301.
Can someone tell me what the code will be to do that in the htaccess file?

Unfortunately I cant do that on a public forum.
But I can tell you all the URLs look like the one Ive posted, loads of numbers etc.
It isnt a dynamic site so these actual URLs are not live pages.
When you visit these URLs, they are just duplicates of the home page

I have a HTML website, mysite1.com, and I placed a link on the home page to another one of my sites, mysite2.com
Today I checked the links to mysite2.com in Majestic and noticed 24 links coming from the mysite1.com instead of just one link.
The URLs from mysite1.com that are showing in Majestic are like this
mysite1.com,was inherited from a friend and I believe that it was originally built in Frontpage.
Can you tell me how I can get rid of these multiple links as I only want 1 showing from the home page

I have the option of getting a link from 2 websites home pages. My site is a financial service website.
I want to know if it is safe to do so.
The first site is a hotel site, so their content has no relation to my site
And the second is a Google News website about finances
They have offered me a section in the sidebar to have a sentence or 2 about my site with a link.
Can you tell me would these be safe to get? I don't want to be hit by any penalty
I set up my business site on a VPS and its working great. The site is doing well ranking for my keywords.
I have another domain name that I was going to host on the VPS also. The site will be in a completely new business and there will be no overlapping keywords at all. A separate business altogether.
Can someone tell me if adding another site to the VPS I have cause any SEO issues as the last thing I want to do is negatively effect my main business site

After some research I've now submitted my site to Newsnow.co.uk, so it should get more exposure.

My site was just accepted in to Google News yesturday and when I went to check the sitemap for the news, Google Webmaster showed errors for the news sitemap.
So I have tried every wordpress plugin I could find, and submitted the news sitempa.
Each one had errors, the only one that worked for me and my site is now showing in Google News is this plugin BWP Google XML Sitemaps

At the moment all 3 domains are with a different hosting company and all 3 have different Google Webmaster accounts
I guess I put them all on one Google WM account, but should I do anything with the domains themselves?
Ah yes thats makes sense. Old Domain #1 has 10 pages and Old domain #2 has 20 pages. There are some overlap, but I could still create relevant pages for the redirects.
One question, what should i do with the home pages? Do I 301 redirect both home pages to the home page of the new site?
Does 301 redircting 2 aged domain to a new one have a compounding effect?
Ive redirected domain #1 to teh new site and my new domain has now jumped to position 6 on Google for the keyword.
I have noticed that the sites above me are all aged domains and some with very few backlinks. Number 1 is 4 years old and 20 backlinks, thats it!
I am wondering, if I redirected a 11 year old domain that is in the same niche, but never really targeteed that same keyword, would that bump my site even higher?
Obviously i am building quality backlinks to the new domain and making sure these are hard to get high quality backlinks.

Thanks for the reply. Just to make things clearer, its not actually insurance I am targeting, it is a financial product, I chose that to keep it simple.
The front page doesnt actually rank high for much anyway, I wanted to change the front page to target the most profitable product/service that we sell.
Am I correct in thinking that the front page should do ok due to the age of the domain and the mozrank and moztrust? The reason I am asking that is I see a massive serp change since penguin and noticed that the ones now ranking are all aged domains. The top one is 4 years old with 20 backlinks, thats it!
I have a site that is in the financial services niche and has around 20 pages talking about different services.
I want to change the goal of the site and now just target Insurance.
The current home page is a simple introduction to the website, I was going to change this to target the insurance keyword and put around 500 words content on the front page. I was also going to change the Page Title, Description and H1 tags too.
My question is will the front page then rank for that keyword once google recrawls the site? Could I damage the PR of the site or any other factors from changing the front page.

I've just noticed 5 links appear via Majestic. Opensiteexplorer hasnt picked these up yet.
I want to check if I should get these removed or leave them be. How can I check to see if the link is good or bad?

I'd be very interested in a service that will get rid of these bad links. Its just too time consuming for me
So would a 301 redirect to a competitor sand box them?
My thinking is how can I send enough signals to Google to show that its legit? Would changing the old businesses Twitter profiles to the new URL and also their Facebook pages?
I am also contacting the sites that have great links and asking them to change the link to the new site.
I would hope all these things tells Google that its legit and not some spammy site or operation.
sorry forgot to answer. The message from google was that they still detect unnatural links to manipulate PR etc
Yeah I thought about the Google forums, but dont like making the domains public.
What is annoying is that I still see links appear to the sites, Ive no idea who is doing this or why, or if its just some automated software. I saw 500 links appear last week via Majestic.
What I have been doing also is adding fresh unique content to the sites. I was unsure if this would help.
Something else that I noticed, bith sites have huge footers with links to pages. Making all pages linked from all pages. Im thinking if thats added to the penalty, then a 301 redirect would get rid of that as the new site has a brand new, modern theme and navigation.

I understand entirely. I have been working on removing bad links since I acquired the businesses in May. I have removed all BMR links for both domains.
I have also contacted many sites direct and via WHOIS info and asked them to remove the links.
I have requested reinclusion twice now for one of the domains and both times I get the same message back from google. I have litterally done evrything in my power to sort the links profiles out.
Business1.com went from position 1 to 100 on some keywords, some keywords rank first page. But generally all got hit. This is the one Ive been working on the hardest, but it doesnt seem to be coming back at all.
Business2.com went down and has come back a little, from minimal help.
Im sure I read somewhere that sometimes a site may not recover. I think this could be the case.
By the way, business1.com had spammy links, but also had great links as it was a legit company. The owners friend was a so called "seo expert" who went away and xrummered with exact match anchors etc the site. So business1.com link profile is not pure rubbish (if that makes the dffference)

I have read quite a bit of stuff on 301 redirects after Penguin. Hoping someone could help me out.
im looking at a way to do a legit 301 redirect without passing the penalty.
I have acquired two businesses, business1 and business2, that both had websites that were hit by penguin.
Ive anaylsed there backlinks and theres a lot of spammy forum links and comments and I was also informed they were both using buildmyrank.
A side note, buiness2 only started using BMR after it noticed business1 have large amounts of high PR links.
business1.com was ranking at position 1 till the penguin hit. Business2.com was ranking around page 2
I work in the same arena as these two businesses and didnt generate any business via the internet. When these 2 businesses failed (due to loss of rankings and traffic) i decided to take them over.
What I am thinking of doing is 301'ing both business domains to my brand new, zero links, domain which will be the name of my new company.
I will combine the content from both sites, around 1000 pages, in to the new one.
So my question is, does 301'ing multiple domains, that target the same keywords, and operate in the same niche, look less "spammy" then 301'ing 1 domain?
I'm trying to look at it in the eyes of google. It is a legit merging of businesses.
