No English Medea can ever be Euripides', but this is as close as anyone has come so far, and a good deal closer than I thought anyone would ever come. If you don’t know much about Greek mythology, medea pdf dramatization of the ancient story of the sorceress daughter of a barbarian king whose arrogant husband leaves her for another woman, to which she responds by murdering both the other woman and her own children. Very much to my surprise, the horrific tale of Medea (Elizabeth Bunch) and Jason (Chris Hutchison) turns out to be well-suited to an intimate, understated modern-dress presentation—the action of the play really does speak for itself—and it would be hard to come up with a better cast than the group of actors that Mr. Melrose has assembled, eight of whom are members of the Alley’s resident acting company.

Ms. Bunch is especially striking as Medea, by turns haggard, anguished, furious and tightly controlled, while Mr. Hutchison (who is Ms. Bunch’s husband in real life) gives us a smug, self-satisfied Jason who never sees her bloody revenge coming until it has laid waste to his soul. Every element of this production is similarly distinguished, though I do want to make specific mention of Pierre Dupree, the sound designer, whose wall-to-wall musical score is richly atmospheric but at no time obtrusive.
