I began my company retailing window blinds on-line at university as part of the enterprise scheme. After a few years of having it as a sideline I eventually decided it had enough legs to go full time and took the plunge. Another 3 years on and we have our own office a team of 4 working full time on the site and the business is profitable. I've tried a number of different approaches to SEO in the past and been stung along the way. From experience I would recommend learning SEO yourself even if you intend on outsourcing as this will definitely help you weed out the people who talk the talk but can't actually help you.

Favorite Thing about SEO
It's certainly not boring as everything constantly changes.
