Why would you canonically link Product pages to the category page? Of course that is going to disappear the product pages. Why not just link from the product pages to category pages with a normal link <a>to increase page authority on the category page?</a>

Organic Listings showing Google Tag Manager + Google Page Title...?
I'm a bit stumped with this. I optimise all my titles etc for Australia - and now the organic liatings are showing something strange. For example ( we sell health supplements )
Meta title = "My Product , Buy Online Australia"
If I type "My Product" - the title in the organic listings says "My Product - My Company Limited" - and the only place I can see it getting that from is a combination of Meta Data used in Google Tag Manager + the Name on my Google places page. This is much more obvious for categories.. but it's a pain in the butt.
If I type "My Product Australia" Then the original "My Product , Buy Online Australia" comes up.
Any ideas on policy etc? I have taken the "Limited" off the Google business page - so hopefully this will change over time - but I can't find any information on why google would do something like this.
If you had shed any light on this - would be much appreciated.

Ecommerce Rich Snippets Category Question
Hello
Technical question:
I have category pages in my site - and product pages in my site.
Category Pages
- I Have listed Grouped products on them ( i.e. a product that could have multiple offers for each size )
- I Have the relevant markup for them ( one for each product ) .
Product Pages
- The Product pages have grouped products as well - but the individual simple products are note marked up.
- The Product pages have Aggregate reviews on them.
My question is this: Should I use the grouped product sku to identify the grouped product on the category page and the product page? Technically they aren't Stock Keeping Units ( SKU's ) - but they could be used to link the 2 together to avoid duplicates.
Ideas?

Google Rich Snippets in E-commerce Category Pages
Hello
Best Practice for rich snippets / structured data in ecommerce category pages?
I put structured markup in the category pages and it seems to have negatively impacted SEO. Webmaster tools is showing about 2.5:1 products to pages ratio.
Should I be putting structured data in category Pages at all?
Thanks for your time

RE: Ratings Snippets Gone? ( Help! )
Thanks. Realistically the Currency specific pages are purely for google shopping to verify the right price corresponds with their experience - so I didn't really need to have offers in the page.
My workaround was to remove the offers in multi currencies for regular page and only show the offers when a currency was selected. Snippets ( stars ) have returned
Kind Regards

RE: Ratings Snippets Gone? ( Help! )
yes - sorry , had a brainwave this morning.. I put the offers in conditionally only if there is a ?cur=aud parameter in the URL. that way there are 2 scenarios:
-
Organic Listings = no currency parameters so no offers shown
-
Google Shopping , forces cur=aud parameter in the URL so offers ( pricing ) and availability is available to google shopping
I re-submitted .that page about 6 hours ago via webmaster tools .. so fingers crossed. If there is any reason why you think it wouldn't display snippets for ratings let me know ( I know google change things ALL the time )

Ratings Snippets Gone? ( Help! )
Hello
We had good traffic from ratings ( stars ) . I have added Offer details in the rich snippets in various currencies - the snippet testing tool likes it , but for some reason the stars on my site have completely dissapeared and been gone for almost a week. I need the offer information in there for google shopping automatic updates and google told me that it's implemented correctly for the shopping part.. but I really don't know what to do about this.
Any ideas why would be really appreciated.

Links / Metadata around Recent Posts etc in Wordpress / Blog - Good SEO Practice?
Hello
In a Wordpress blog ( or part of an ecommerce site that runs under wordpress ) it is good to show recent posts in the sidebar on most pages.
Obviously the posts aren't going to be relevant to every post , so my questions are:
- Is having these on the page hurting SEO for the page?
- Is there good metadata structure to put in there? ( like rel="nofollow" or similar )
Thoughts?
Thanks for your time

International SEO, Ecommerce & Rich Snippets
I have an Australian Ecommerce site. I also sell to NZ and USA . As part of the user experience it will detect where you are and change the currency accordingly. so when google crawls - the currency will always be USD I guess ( because it is a US IP address ). My question - how can I embed ecommerce microdata that will show the correct currency / price to the correct country in SERPS ?

Wordpress SEO/ Ecommerce , Site with Multiple Domains ( International ) & Canonical URLs
Hi
I have an ecommerce site with an integrated wordpress instance. I want to have one wordpress site that outputs to 2 domains exactly the same content , but one will have canonical URL . NZ & Australia Sites.
So: Would I use the rel="Alternate" hreflang="en-nz" .
I want the same content to rank well for each country and not be penalised for duplicate content.
Ideas?

RE: Ecommerce Link Juice and Canonical URLs
I still think the better option is to have 1 URL. I was using the root URL for products ( effectively 1 URL ) and not having the category in the URL and my SEO was doing well - BUT I wanted the Categories to be displayed in Google as clickable - so I changed to the canonical method having different URLs with 1 Canonical. Over a couple of months my SEO suffered terribly - some categories in the top 10 down to 20-30 . I have just implemented having 1 URL ( with category in it ) - we will see how we go..
-
RE: Ecommerce Link Juice and Canonical URLs
Thanks - yes I am actually seeing this first hand.
I used the canonical method - and it is rapidly degrading my SEO . not hugely , but some things that were almost on page 1 are now at the end of page 1 / beginning of page 2. I am currently changing everything to have 1 URL ( with the category this time )

RE: Ecommerce Link Juice and Canonical URLs
Thanks for your replys - I'm not really asking the question whether it should be a 301 or Canonical - I have the opportunity to make all the links go directly to the correct URL - or to go to the category and use Canonical. ( then there would ony be one actual URL ) - just wondering if that is more beneficial as you would have 4-5 links going to the same product page instead of 1 going to the product page and the rest with Canonical URL's .
So if you have any more ideas...???

Ecommerce Link Juice and Canonical URLs
Hello all. I am optimising an E-Commerce site and I have a questions about Products in several categories & Canonical URL's. Using Magento Platform.
site.com/category1/product1/ ( link from category is site.com/product1/ )
site.com/category2/product1/ ( link from category is site.com/product1/ )
site.com/category2/subcategory1/product1 ( link from category is the same , as is the canonical URL )
site.com/product1/ ( this is where other categories link to )Canonical links for all the above is site.com/category2/subcategory1/product1 which takes care of duplicate content correctly.
I just wonder if we would get more link juice if ALL the links from all categories went to site.com/category2/subcategory1/product1 ( instead of some going to site.com/product1/ )
Thanks in advance

RE: Ecommerce URL's
Yes - Duplicate Content is taken care of with SEO extension ( Canonical URL - you can set it ) I'm inclined to have the full URL in there because
-1 - if it ranks in the SERPs - then the full URL will rank - and you should be able to see the categories as clickable items in the SERPs and
-2 - When you arrive at the page , you see breadcrumbs as the "how deep I am" and you can click on the next level up ( wheras if you just have the short link it has no "parent" if you know what I mean )
-3 Because the full URL is ranked in the SERPs - the breadcrumbs are links when google crawls the page - so each page carries a bit more link juice to relevant categories.
Make sense?

Ecommerce URL's
I'm a bit divided about the URL structure for ecommerce sites.
I'm using Magento and I have Canonical URLs plugin installed. My question is about the URL structure and length.
1st Way: If I set up Product to have categories in the URL it will appear like this
mysite.com/category/subcategory/product/ - and while the product can be in multiple places , the Canonical URL can be either short or long.
The advantage of having this URL is that it shows all the categories in the breadcrumbs ( and a whole lot more links over the site ) . The disadvantage is the URL Length
2nd Way: Setting up the product to have no category in the URL
URL will be mysite.com/product/
Advantage: short URL. disadvantage - doesn't show the categories in the breadcrumbs if you link direct.
Thoughts?

Link Building
I have to develop a strategy for link building.
The SEO guy I have been speaking with has started putting links on .edu sites etc .
To me - this "stinks" of manipulating the search engines - which I know we will get stung by at some point.
I hope this isn't standard practice - but I don't know what the best way to improve rankings in terms of links etc.
We sell health products and are starting to put out 3-4 high quality articles per week.
Ideas?
Kind Regards

RE: Wordpress Tag Pages - NoIndex?
Thanks for the reply
On their own page: https://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/
[excerpt]On smaller sites it might make sense to noindex either the category or the tag structure, but in my experience noindexing those on yoast.com does little to no change at all.
There is one type of archive that is noindex, follow by default as well in the WordPress SEO plugin: the search result pages. This is a best practice from Google for which a setting is left out as you should just have that anyway.
My thinking around this is that if people are looking for "Articles on topicx" then this would be more relevant to their search query because it's a collection of exactly what they are looking for - and more geared towards the 'long tail"

Wordpress Tag Pages - NoIndex?
Hi there.
I am using Yoast Wordpress Plugin. I just wonder if any test have been done around the effects of Index vs Noindex for Tag Pages? ( like when tagging a word relevant to an article )
Thanks

RE: Outbound Links as References - use nofollow or not?
Thanks for the quick reply
Our writer is a doctor , so many of his references are .edu sites or pubmed trials etc - so certainly the links will be trusted - and I know that if you have inbound links from sites like that they are gold - just not sure about outbound . I guess it shows some credibility that the articles are researched ...? Just not sure how Google Views those.
Thanks

Outbound Links as References - use nofollow or not?
Hey People
We run an ecommerce site and we research and wrote articles on health topics , and we post the references on the articles in posts ( Magento site / Wordpress for articles )
Should I be putting rel=nofollow in the outbound links or not?
I have read a few different posts but none seem to definitively fit my situation.

Webmaster Tools Content Keywords & Meta Tagging
In Webmaster tools , Content keywords give an indication of what Google thinks a site is about.
This site is a health site ( online shopping - health supplements ) - but one of the terms it thinks the site is about is "Dollar" . I'm guessing this is because on every page there is Currency Selection from multiple currencies.
How do I tell Google that this part of the page is nothing to do with what my site is about?
Thanks for your reply in advance!

Robots.txt Blocked Most Site URLs Because of Canonical
Had a bit of a "Gotcha" in Magento.
We had Yoast Canonical Links extension which worked well , but then we installed Mageworx SEO Suite.. which broke Canonical Links.
Unfortunately it started putting www.mysite.com/catalog/product/view/id/516/ as the Canonical Link - and all URLs with /catalog/productview/* is blocked in Robots.txt
So unfortunately We told Google that the correct page is also a blocked page. they haven't been removed as far as I can see but traffic has certainly dropped.
We have also , at the same time had some Site changes grouping some pages & having 301 redirects.
Resubmitted site map & did a fetch as google.
Any other ideas? And Idea how long it will take to become unblocked?
