RE: SEO for a site in development
Thank you very much for the in depth response. I agree, this type of content strategy would be extremely beneficial for them to be seen as a credible booking engine and help with the SEO too! My only concern is that there are only particular towns and cities that this booking engine has for each service so we really wanted to rank for specific locations. While this type of content would undoubtedly drive traffic, many users would not convert into customers as there is no service nearby.
I like the idea of a side menu but do you think this would be enough to allow the pages to rank?

RE: SEO for a site in development
Hi Mat,
Thanks for the response, I like your thinking but it's another development team who have already began work and we're not going to know the final urls until they put the site live... Another stumbling block with this project!
Cheers

SEO for a site in development
We've recently taken on a new client for an initial 6 months for SEO (until their new site is going live) to help build traffic to the site. They are currently getting a new website built so don't want work done on their current site... but due to the current structure it is making it difficult for us to improve rankings for a number of keywords. They are essentially a booking engine for services across the UK so it is just a home page with a search filtering through their services, locations and dates which leads to a results page. It is a combination of services and locations we need to target keywords for but there are no appropriate landing pages due to the site layout.
The one thing they are happy for us to work on is the blog, so my question is would it be best to create landing pages on the blog targeting keywords such as 'sports massages in London' and build links to these pages? Then when it is time for the new site, with new appropriate landing pages, simply 301 redirect these pages?
If anyone has any input on this idea or suggestions for other ways about it we'd be delighted to hear from you
Thanks

Ecommerce website with too many links on page
Hi,
I'm working on onsite seo for an ecommerce website and my recent report has shown that I have a high number of pages where there are 'too many links on page'. Does anyone have tips on how to avoid this when we're using mega menus, plenty of navigation for the user and links to products on each page?
Thanks

Is it better to redirect a url or set up a landing page for a new site?
Hi,
One of our clients has got a new website but is still getting quite a lot of traffic to her old site which has a page authority of 30 on the home page and has about 20 external backlinks.
It's on a different hosting package so a different C block but I was wondering if anyone could advise if it would be better to simply redirect this page to the new site or set up a landing page on this domain simply saying "Site has moved, you can now find us here..." sort of idea.
Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

RE: Any advice for better results for local search in the UK ?
Yea they are a bit of a waste of time,
The client is better to pick a decent brand type domain, ie proplumbers.co.uk
then create landing pages within the site ieproplumbers.co.uk/plumbers-townname
then optimise the page for that area with unique content, customers quotes, service map, and if possible local phone number of that area. As in my opinion this helps with conversion.
Google has been moving away from keyword rich domains for years now, yes they are still effective but nothing like they used to be. I would definitely stay away from this practice.

RE: Any advice for better results for local search in the UK ?
Hi Will here
for me the best way is first off good content, you will find that when your dealing with plumbers, plasterers and builders getting links from guest blogging, infographics and giveaways is not practical.
here is what i would do for a local company
-
Join all the industry forums and start talking getting involved with your clients community
-
Start doing some keyword research into your clients business, ie plasterers, Rendering, Machine plastering ect
-
Start Creating content on this ie "how to Render a wall" , "how to plaster a wall"
-
For every job your client does locally write a blog post, ie "Plastering Job Glasgow"
-
Start Following other local tradesman or services like your clients business
-
Tweet your client work to other tradesmen or like wise service
-
Join all the local services directories that are related to your niche
-
Make sure your business address matches across directories you join,
-
Create a google business plus account,
-
Create a nice A5 Flyer offers something a small discount on your clients jobs in return for a honest review of your services
-
Join Facebook and do the same, if a customer leaves a review give them a little discount
This is just some of my tips
Also one last tip
If for example your client is a local service for example "plumbing" company and your in Manchester. Then try find a area thats more competive than your area, ie London. Complete a few searches ie Plumbing London, plumbers in London, then complete the following
Check their backlinks
Check their google plus profile
Check their sites onsiteThis should give you an idea of their strategies, as sometimes when looking at your competition in your own backyard can distract you.

RE: C Block IP Links Strategy
Hi Yes i see your point about the benefit to the client , but much like guest posting or an artist adding his name to a pice of work, referrals is part of our business.
We are looking to add our credentials to a clients site, so when someone visits the clients site likes the looks of it, we want them to think, "i might just contact this company"
we are trying to develop the least spammist way of doing this.

SEO Ecommerce Keywords
Hi guys got a question regarding ecommerce seo
do you think its a better idea to target more long tail terms and try get links directly to product pages, brand pages and categories.
Rather than focus on short keywords that do bring in good traffic but are very broad, i will prob do both, but i would like a second opinion please about other users strategies
thanks

C Block Links in Open Explorer
Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can help me with understanding the advanced reports in Open Explorer. I'm looking to create a list of competitors links to go after but don't want to create loads of links from the same c blocks for blog posts, articles etc.
In open explorer it says my competitor has 451 linking C Blocks but when i download csv's using advanced reports with the filter of 'links that come from the same C block', the csv only has 26 links. The same happened with the filter 'from the same ip address'.
How can i download and analyse the links so I can see all the linking C blocks and know which sites I want to use and which ones I want to avoid?
Thanks,
Ross

RE: Home Page Rankings Drop
yea this is what i was thinking to, but how big a slap are we getting,
as its knocked us 100-200 places off
I saw rads video the other day ago and made some extra changes, lighten the load on over optimisation.
I have just removed one of the catering terms from the title, but this looks a bit excessive for over optimisation.

RE: Home Page Rankings Drop
yea i just checked nothing there,
its odd that the map listing is working fine tho they are ranked 4th
all other keywords are fine, just the keywords involving "catering glasgow"
it looks like the home page has been excluded from ranking under this term
it was fine yesterday

Home Page Rankings Drop
Hi all
we have being working with a small local client in the last few weeks getting good rankings using onsite op, and business listings
we have been getting good ranking ie top 15
then today we drop right out the top 50, after completing manual checks i see the keywords as all related
| glasgow catering | Not in Top 50 | > 42 | |
| catering glasgow | Not in Top 50 | > 41 | |
| glasgow caterers | Not in Top 50 | > 39 | |
| caterers in glasgow | Not in Top 50 | > 37 | |
| caterers glasgow | Not in Top 50 | > 32 |Also when completing manual checks on the above keywords, the home page is not ranking what so ever, infact its missing i went 300 results deep and cant find it, other inner pages rank but not the home.
The only other recent change is that we now have a listing under the Google maps section of the homepage on page 1
any advice

301 help, whats the best way
Hi all
right now i have 301 redirects setup in my htaccess file
i recently redesigned our site so i have been redirecting all the old urls to the new ones.
I saw a post about having all your urls the same format, so i updated my htaccess file to redirect all urls from http://www.mysite.com/food to http://www.mysite.com/food/ (added a forward slash).
Now on my latest seo crawl i see all my site urls, redirecting to the forward slash url.
am i doing this right,
thanks

Internal Linking - Same page
Is there any benefit in internally linking back to the same page? I have no other relevant pages in the site I can link to so wondering if it's worthwhile to use anchor text to link back to the same page?

New domain, and Local Service, Moderate Keyword
Hi all
i have a new client, who has bought a shiny new domain name for his business, it has one keyword in it related to his business.
He is a local plastering looking to get his site ranked, but my worry is the domain age, its very new less than 2 months, i know google sandboxes new domains,
The term he is targeting is Mod Completive (26%)
is getting his domain ranked page one within 6 months a possibility, or will it just seem utterly spammy in googles eyes.
Any tips please
thanks
