How do you check your KW rankings?
-
I'm currently using the PRO campaigns to track my main keywords. However, I'm trying to do some research on KW opportunities, and having no luck finding a way to conveniently check rankings for new keywords.
What tool do you use to get ranking results for large keyword lists?
-
I use several tools for rank tracking:
1. CuteRank - Simple and easy to use keyword rank checker and best of all, it's free. http://cuterank.net/
2. Market Samurai - Great software for keyword research and includes a keyword rank checker. http://www.marketsamurai.com/
3. SEMRush.com - I don't really use this site for keeping track of my keyword rankings over time, but it is invaluable for discovering new keyword opportunities since you can see all the keywords your site and your competitors' sites rank for. One way it helped me is that on one of my sites, I discovered that a random PDF was ranking #1 for a popular keyword but since I was only using Google Analytics to track my website visitors, I had no idea the PDF was getting any traffic. So I redirected the PDF to an actual page with the GA tracking code, website navigation and a contact form in order to convert some of those visitors in potential customers.

I use Rank Tracker to check hundreds of keywords each day for multiple sites. The best thing for me is the ability to schedule Rank Tracker to automatically check rankings throughout the night.
I'm not sure how limited the free version is but well worth seeing if it suits your purpose.

I checked and it indeed disabled, surely because it relies to adwords APIs for traffic estimations, and there are serious problems with those APIs (also here with the kw difficulty tool. And yes, it is a paid tool, even though quite cheap respect others and surely worth the money, as it is meant especially for kw hunting and the ranking feature is an important but subsidiary feature. .

Ha, sorry for the confusion - it's literally called RankTracker.
www.link-assistant.com/rank-tracker/
edit: and I just checked their site and it's down. decent program, though
-
Which Rank Tracker are you referring to? There are dozens of sites/tools that are using that name.
I'm more concerned with finding a ranking tool that can show me where my site ranks for large lists of keywords. Less so with general keyword strategies.
-
Your server logs (and website analytics) will always be the best place to mine for new keyword opportunities you may be unaware of.
For monitoring keyword rank there are quite a few options, and it just depends on what you're looking for. If you're like me, the Pro service here with weekly updates is too slow. SEScout.com has hourly updates and is usually very accurate. They have free acounts available that are good for tracking projects with 10 or less keywords.
Like pretty much any SaaS though, they can get expensive when you want to track hundreds or thousands of keywords on a regular basis. That's where software tracking is usually a better choice, such as RankTracker. I've more accuracy problems with this program for local listings, but for non-localized SEO it's great.
If you want keyword ideas based on speculative data, then SpyFu Recon is pretty neat. However, in order for it to really be of any use, you need to have a site that's already pulling in some decent traffic for its keywords.

I'm trying to re-create the spreadsheets from the webinar yesterday about actionable keyword strategies. Unfortunately without a batch ranking tool I don't think its going to be worth the effort. Looking them up one by one in private mode isn't viable when you've only got 24 hours in a day, and the seogadget toolset is either behind a paywall I can't find or disabled temporarily.
-
A still good rank checker is the free seobook one for firefox. On the other hand, I find extremely useful the keyword tool by SeoGADGET.co.uk that between it's features have one that show you the ranking of all the queries listed in Analytics and that have generated at least 1 organic visit.
-
I track it all through the PRO campaigns and manually search in a browser in privacy mode with personalization disabled to get more up-to-date information should I need it for short term analysis. Since only long-term matters for most I found that the PRO tools are sufficient 90% of the time though.

Changed from www to non-www lost all rank. Will it return?
My web site used https://www.domain.com for the past 18 months. We finally got to #3 position for our top keyword. We changed web servers and our wordpress admin section somehow got changed to https://domain.com. As you can imaging I'm not too happy. We do have 301 redirects installed. Yesterday I noticed that our site was not ranking anymore. In fact, all our pages and our site URLs at https://www.domain.com have been de-indexed. I assume because that no longer exists. Using site: all the web pages under https://domain.com (which were identical to the old www) are now listed. All of them. However, none are showing in searches unless we search for the business name. They are not appearing under keyword searches. I would assume that the 301s (which are installed property) would make the site keep it's rank, as the pages are all identical. Will we ever get our rank back? Should we switch back to www? Or do the 301s just take time to hit? How long if that's the case?

Domain Change, Lost ranking on 1 keyword
Hey guys, Long time follower of the Q&A forum, but don't post too often. I'm having an issue I never came across. We changed a domain from mpbuilderscincy.com to mpcincinnati.com. We did the 301 redirect and all the SEO flowed through pretty well. Most pages didn't even change in file structure so we didn't need to do page redirects for the most part. Anyway, long story short, we are seeing the same rankings as we had before now (it's been about 2 months) except for 1 and only 1 keyword. It's "Home Remodeling Cincinnati". We dropped from page 2, to page 11 on Google and it won't budge. Now on Yahoo and Bing, we are right back where we were before already with that keyword. But Google just refuses to bump us back to where we were before the change. The Home Remodeling page: http://www.mpcincinnati.com/Residential-Services/Home-Remodeling.aspx has an on page grade of A for that keyword and we have it as one of our main keywords on the home page of the site (title, h1, alt tags, etc). No errors on the page. I mean it looks pretty clean for this page as far as SEO except for 1 notice that mentions the 301 canonical redirect. We uploaded the new sitemap right away. I just can't put a thumb on it and wondering if you guys had any tips. Thanks, Chris

Counting Places LIstings in Manual Rank Checking?
Hello, When doing manual keyword lookups, are people counting Google Places listings in their rankings? E.g. If the website's places listing is the "5th" item on the results page, do you count that keyword as "5"? -- even if the organic listing comes up first at, say, position $20? On one hand I'd be in favor of including them in order because "who cares" if the user sees your website first, or the Places listing that points to your website first? But then again, it's my understanding that places listings are highly variable, so that they should be skipped entirely in calculating rank positions. So what are others out there doing? And by places of course I mean Google + Local/Plus or whatever they are calling it this week. Thanks!

Two for the price of one: Can I rank for multiple keywords when only targeting one keyword?
If I'm optimizing for a specific keyword, is it accurate to assume that by ranking for that specific keyword that I will also be able to rank for similar or root keywords merely by ranking for the original keyword? For example, if I'm targeting 'free online bucket list' is it safe to assume that I will also be able to inadvertently rank for 'online bucket list' or 'free bucket list'? Can I assure clients of this? Or if I'm targeting 'Colorado grocery store' should I also naturally rank for 'grocery store Colorado' and not need to make both of these my targeted keywords?

Unusual Words - How to Check what Google Recognises
I want to check which words Google is aware of, I remember Danny Dover talking about "SeoMoz.org" and theorising that Google couldn't understand that SEO was in the URL because it didn't understand that "Moz" was a word and therefore couldn't seperate the 2 words "SEO and "Moz" out. Any ideas, I thought about using Google Instant but as it comes up with "seomoz" when i type in "seom" so am assuming that this detail is taken from a diffrent source. Justin
