How are 301s reported in GA?
-
Does anyone have any insight on exactly how on-site 301s are reported in Google Analytics? My direct traffic seems to climb at the same rate as my organic with absolutely no off-line promotion. I have a suspicion that the 301s that I have built to re-coupe traffic being sent to old pages are being reported as direct. Any validity to this?

Lou, I agree that it is odd that your'e seeing simultaneous upticks in traffic from the different mediums, but I wouldn't say it's out of the realm of natural possibility. As for your original question, I think you've mostly figured it all out. But allow me to do my best to clarify: The GA snippet would never actually fire on the old URL in the case of an old URL 301 redirecting to a new URL. 301s DO preserve referral information. So an old link on example.com that links to your OLD url will track in GA as landing on the new URL with example.com as a referrer. There are a few instances where the referral information will be lost, most (all) of them are detailed in the previously linked thread here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google Analytics/thread?tid=51c7a2aa222f415e&hl=en Mike

No PPC or email, I have been pushing straight organic with a lot of 301 work.
Just real weird to see a jump like this in direct traffic that mimics the referral and organic trends.
Thanks again for the feedback.

I agree with you that the answer is quite generic. Altho Google is able to know where the traffic is referred from. Via HTTP Headers you could already easily find out where a page will refer to, like I did with this case when using a 301 redirect. While Google isn't probably using this option it is possible as you see.
I especially like your reference, because a couple of months later the guy who replied invented the wheel again and is implying in this article the opposite in my opinion.
To get some more information about your question, did you sent out recently some email campaigns or started up some SEA/ PPC campaigns?

Thanks for the reply. I get what you are saying, but there is something that just isn't quite right about the answer in the article. A 301 happens on the server side, so google wouldn't know about it. Additionally, no page (let alone tracking code) exists for the old urls that now have redirects. I would think that in order to qualify it as a referrer, google would have to know where the traffic was referred from ... no? I think I would feel better if the article you referenced actually stated 301 instead of a redirect (possibly client-side) that COULD be tracked by google.
Here is something I found where there are conflicting answers to the same question I have here, maybe some others here on SEOMoz can weigh in on this as well.

Hi Lou,
I can't make this answer any longer: Your answer could be found within this help article of Google Analytics. To make this a bit more efficient: "If your site uses redirects, the redirecting page becomes the landing page's referrer."
So according to this, this is not causing the increase of your direct traffic.
Hope this helps!

GA 4 Question
What differences are you typically seeing in Google Analytics 4 compared to UA? For one site I have, UA says there were 2,342 new users. GA4 says there were 1,899 new users for the same time period. Does that seem like a normal amount of difference between the two platforms?

Help me exclude our dynamic IP addresses from GA
Hi There, I can't believe we are the first SEO Web Development company with the issue of dynamic IP addresses, for technical reasons our ISP keeps changing our IP addresses to different random IP addresses (no patterns, ranges, or reasoning to the specific changes) and we obviously need to exclude our own visits to google analytics - but I can't seem to find any simple way to do this in Google Analytics - can you help me find a simple solution for this? I did find two chrome extensions(I'll give you the links to those at the end) that I will look into if you cant help me find a simpler solution 🙂 Thanks so much!! https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/block-yourself-from-analy/fadgflmigmogfionelcpalhohefbnehm?hl=en https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/developer-cookie/lknhpplgahpbindnnocglcjonpahfikn

Reported data in Multi-channel funnels in GA wrong?
I'd love to start using the Multi-channel funnels feature in Google Analytics but I have zero confidence in the reported data as it seems to bear no relationship to the standard ecomm reports. To be specific, in August 2013, MCF is reporting the following for email campaigns: Assisted conversions = 20
Reporting & Analytics | | Bluesnapper
Assisted conversion value = £1,405.91
Last Click or Direct Conversions = 14
Last Click or Direct Conversion Value = £369.57 Now switching to the traffic sources report, GA reports for the email campaigns revenue was £1,226,41 over the same period across 21 transactions. My interpretation of this is that the email campaigns were the "last-click" and delivered £1,226,41 and 21 "conversions" (as I have no goals configured in this GA view, conversions = transactions I believe) That leaves the MCF last-click report short by £856.84 (£1,226,41 - £369.57) I can see no reason why this should be so unless I'm not interpreting the data correctly! Anybody have any suggestions/ideas as to what's going on? Any help appreciated.0 -

Question on regular expression for filters on GA
Hi guys, I am creating profiles on some of the countries sites in my network, and have managed to establish the filter for tracking certain url patterns, for example: ^/japan-english- is tracking all my urls in the Japan site that start by japan-english great! however, it is not tracking the japanese instance of the urls. The pattern for the latter is : www.mysite.org/jp/japan-english I could then modify the filter to track the jp subfolder like this: ^/jp/japan-english- but it will then only track the urls on the /jp/ subfolder does anyone know the regex command for tracking the two url patters as follows: /jp/japan-english- & /japan-english- thanks in advance david

GA custom reports involving pages and goals - what are the metrics saying?
Hi, All! I would like to create a custom report that will enable me to see which of my pages are contributing to goal completion on my site (so I can then optimize the pages that are contributing the most, with maximal ROI for the optimization investment). If I make the dimension "page/page title" and the metric "goal X completions" - which would make sense - what exactly are the numbers that I am seeing telling me? Is it how many times a person started the goal funnel from that pages (meaning every goal would appear only once and there be no overlap)? That doesn't appear to be the case with the numbers, because the headline in the main "Goals" section tells me I have 30 goal completions for that goal, for example, but the headline in the custom report (which is adding up all the numbers) is, say, 100. Or does it mean the number of times that this page was ever in the navigation path of someone who ended up completing a goal? Then the same goal would be counted multiple times, for each page in the path. Additionally, I see this strange thing on some of my reports where the actual funnel pages appear as contributing towards goals, which I guess makes sense, but again the numbers don't match up. If the goal was to get to page B, and the funnel was A->B, and there were supposedly 30 goal completions, my custom report says that A gave 28 goal completions and B gave 25. Anyone know for sure - or through testing - what the case is with all these things? Any explanations will be much appreciated!
